@FP51DPO Ringo was not crap. Just because he wasn't splashy in his performances, that didn't mean he couldn't drum. If you listen to the Beatles' recordings and for his drum beat, you can tell he holds a steady beat, and is as good as Honey and other drummers of the time.
@sapphi yes he was, no he wasn't... P Mc had to stand in on a number of tracks as he was unable to 'get the beat' I have listened to many many Beatles recording as I guess most of the world has and 'in 'MY' opinion' Honey is better and the syncopated rythm she plays on this is far more complex than anything ringo was capable of playing... Ringo knew he wasn't the best and chose Keith Moon to give lessons to his son; not the ideal role model maybe but one of the greatest drummers
Lawmakers voted late Friday to legalize same-sex marriage, making New York the largest state where gay and lesbian couples can wed, and giving the national gay-rights movement new momentum from the state where it was born.
The same-sex marriage bill was approved on a 33 to 29 vote. The Senate galleries were so packed with supporters and opponents that the fire marshals closed them off.
Take it from me, it was the best time ever to be a teenager and if it hadn't had been for the Pirate Radio Broadcasts of Radio Caroline, we'd all still be listening to the Northern Dance Orchestra.
It's a long time to think back but I think I'm right in saying they're the 'Burns Bison', the early 'Burns' had four pick-ups and the covers in stead of being chrome like they are now were Gold, at the time all the kids wanted 'Fenders' because of the Shads but the Burns like Joe Meek were ahead of their time.
@55chh All the instruments are Burns Bisons made in London by Jim Burns company, Lead guitar is the older 2nd version of the Design (1st was a Four pickup job with gold hardware) while the Rhythm & Bass are the revised Scroll Headstock design which was derived from the that used on the Marvin guitar & Shadows Bass. I've seen pics of Martin Murray & John Lantree with the older type + Alan Ward with the newer version so this must have been mid changeover.
Absolutely wonderful! Hadn't heard of this before, to be honest, came here via "Have I The Right" and am so glad I found this - one of my new favourite songs
@Wrapscallionn I think the song was a little too heavy. The Honeycombs biggest hit, "Have I The Right" is just so upbeat. This is too much of a departure from that sound.
@torresongs2 As a commercial proposition following such a huge commercial hit as Have I the Right it was madness to release this as a single. Maybe something to do with Joe Meek's state of mind at the time, and his special feeling for this song? Yet Eyes is a most fantastic record, performance and production which will survive and grow in estimation.
Both this clip of "eyes" & "have i the right" are available on the dvd "POP GEAR". A 1965 film introduced by Jimmy Saville & featuring loads of Great Bands and singers of the time ! The quality is superb !! One can obtain the dvd from Amazon, albeit at a fairly high price.
I don't know how big they were in GB or the rest of Europe, but I am surprised that they didn't have more than one hit in the states, they deserved better.
@jaemel1 They did remain popular in Europe and Japan for some time, but, yes, they did deserve better - you only have to listen to their first LP 'The Honeycombs' to realise what a versatile band they were Such varied songs - and yet every single one of them catchy and memorable.
Allan Ward's guitar solo so perfectly conveys the loneliness and isolation, and the guilt of forbidden love (at that time, 1964) which the song is about.
This song was supposedly especially dear to Joe Meek as it was about the loneliness of someone in a gay bar when gayness was still illegal (till 1967 - the year Joe died).
They did a couple of things that jumped out from the standard sounds of the day, helped by Joe Meeks whacky production ideas. Check out "Can't Get Through" for a pretty remarkable '65 B side.
The most unusual Honeycombs song. Arrangement of vocals, guitars, drums, all absolutley perfect. Good production , & arrangement (probably Martin Murray!) . I'm 52, & i love this song !
@gazzymodo Just reading up on Joe Meek -- very, very talented man, and short-lived. How very sad that things were like they were in the UK before 1967. Explains a lot....
Wow, what a great video to find! I've always thought this song crazily uncommercial but I take my hat off to you nyrainbow5. And I love all the Burns guitars. I wonder if the company gave the guitars gratis in order to get the exposure . . . .
This is bloody brilliant! Joe Meek couldn't play an instrument but could come up with unknown gems such as this. Great drumming too.
