It gets emotional just to watch this at YouTube. When I heard that Sean Astin had been cast as Samwise Gamgee, I went back in my mind to this scene from RUDY and Sean's portrayal of this character who, with odds stacked against him, refuses to give up and thought, "Yes... yes! That's a fine choice!" Just as important to this scene, I feel, is the very moving orchestral score by the late great Jerry Goldsmith. Movie magic.
@shampoo02 - Yep, just like Rudy you won, proving you are incapable of doing something. Oh? Wait. Rudy proved he was capable. Sorry. Nevermind. You are the anti-Rudy.

Big test for those who know emotional football scenes - Remember When Knute Rockne came home to find George Giipp in his living room after all the unexpected glories. But he is sick and soon dies. When Knute Rockne returns home and the camera flashes to the empty chair by the fireplace is one of the great emotional scenes without a word spoken in Hollywood history. (my opinion)
I was put on the waitlist at Notre Dame this past March, and I've been waiting to hear back ever since. In the next week or two, I'll find out whether I'm going to be accepted or not. It's hard to to get discouraged, you know, with all of the competition. But every time I think of going to Notre Dame I get this feeling inside of me and that's when I know...I know that Notre Dame is where I belong. All I can do is have faith that my dreams are realized.
@mclaxin9 You know, I always wanted to get into medical school. My entire life had existed only to get into med school since I was about 17 or 18 when I made the decision to become a doctor. I worked my ass off and made countless sacrifices to make my chances of getting into med school as good as possible. And then the day I found out I had been accepted to my 1st choice school, it was the happiest I'd ever been in my life.
Joe Montana is jealous that his glory days are over. What's the point of his saying that it is fake. He's just bitter nobody made a movie of him given his "success".... what a loser he is.
It just goes to show that nothing is impossible, impossible is just another small word thrown around by people who decided to give up and use it to breakdown people with dreams.
1:23 I cry every time he opens that letter and reads his acceptance, I've watched this movie dozens of times and I still can't get past that part of the movie without crying a little
Rudy said "fuck you" to everyone and did what he wanted to do, despite his family shit, despite his weight and height, despite all the shit, he set his mind to something and succeeded. The craziest thing is, we can do it too, you and I......
Maybe the best part of this entire movie was rudy reading that letter of acceptance! His last chance to get in to Notre Dame... Great scene! And then taking the letter to his dad, that was great too!!!!!
Wow! I saw this movie when I was attending the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. There were guys on that 1992 team that had no athletic ability whatsoever. However, they had heart ,and that obviously made the difference. I can really identify with Rudy. Graduating from college in the face of enormous pressure to fail was a huge accomplishment for me personally. I'll never forget it! Thank You God!
I remember this scene when I watched this movie as a kid. I felt the same way as Rudy when I received my acceptance letter from Notre Dame - over a decade after watching that scene.
you know what I say? that's false. don't believe anything anyone has to say that is negative to your dreams. don't ever let the negative outweigh the positive. even if you don't go all the way, you're ahead from where you set out. work hard enough, anything you want to happen, will happen. just don't take stock in the negative.
GREAT scene - but you really should have included the next few seconds - the father announces it over the loudspeaker to the whole factory - he then looks at the letter again and places it carefully back into the envelope as if it the letter were priceless (just like the scene). ;-)
This is the scene and the end made me cry man tears. Where Rudy said he didn't get good grades the movie never mentioned it, but in real life Rudy had Dyslexia. Back then you couldn't get help for something like that and you were on your own. I mean Rudy really did have to work twice as hard as everyone else to succeed even in his studies.
i want to meet this man... for i too am following a dream... im a music major who plays clarinet... and someday im going to march in a drum and bugle corps called The Cavaliers... now i have to learn how to play baritone... i will give my 100% to march... or even more... i will do what it takes... just like rudy...
I was recently accepted as a transfer student to a major university after my third attempt and can now totally relate to what Rudy was feeling. I was on my doorstep and just grabbed the mail. Knowing that a big thick packet was good and that a letter was bad, I was a little confused by a small packet. I opened it and found the letter of acceptance. I somehow ended up chasing the rest of the mail around my lawn because it was relatively windy, lol. Best yardwork ever :)
@amfar I am also class of '09, as well as my fiance. Let me tell you I understand the difficulty of getting through A&M admissions. My fiance was also a transfer and she wanted to go to A&M more than anything. Although she only had to try once, it was the only shot she had, and she barely made it. I'll tell you this, soak in every moment at Texas A&M because it goes by fast, and all of the sudden your at your last game as part of the 12th Man.
i was inspired by this movie to go for my dreams and i did. my teachers and the school board always told me that your never going to be anything. They told me i was retarded and that i would never graduate with a high school diploma. well little did they know i fought the odds and over came many obsticals just to graduate from high school and here it is i'll be graduating from slidell high on may 13th!!!
I really can understand this scene a little better now. For a year, I took this test for my teaching certification and failed. Last night, I got my results back from the test in December and I passed. It feels so good to finally pass and show everyone who doubted me I did it!
EVERYONE (even you JMC1987) that dreams a dream, works at his dream and NEVER lets anyone stand in his way will receive that dream- everytime- but you must NEVER QUIT!!!!
the first time I saw this movie, when rudy opened the letter and cried and I thought he got rejected again....then when he started running towards the water, I figured he was going to kill himself.....
