Hopefully Grandma will eventually understand that my baby is confident and I'll continue to reel out the facts of BLW to her, but let me just say this. People are less likely to be open minded about something new if they are confronted with a defensive attitude.
Lily is scoffing that food down! My Grace is starting to perfect the pincer too, peas and corn here we come!!
A lot of people get scared when they see a baby eating BLW style. That doesn't mean you need to rip their heads off in retaliation. Its not the "norm" that its taught to Mothers, therefore they would feel like there is cause for concern. Personally I have to convince my Grandma every time she sees my 10 month old eating anything that isn't pureed. In the end I just ask her nicely to leave the room or be quiet so my baby can eat without someone jumping every time she puts something in her mouth.
Except her Mum was not making it 'easier' to choke. Other commentors have explained it pretty well - and can you yourself not see how well L handles the food? (including spitting out what she cannot eat).
Aren't you guys so very proud of yourselves...jumping all over my comment, when all I was doing was showing a little concern for a child possibly choking. Those chunks of food are quite large. All I was wondering was, why make it easier for her to choke?
Hunnie028 - Didn't you read the description of the video? Lily knows exactly what she is doing (as is obvious from watching her eat) as her mum allowed her to learn about food through baby-led weaning from the age of six months. Babies weaned in this way are no more likely to choke on their food than you are as an adult! Do a bit more research before you post comments that question someone else's parenting - it's quite hurtful of you to assume that a mum would put their beloved child at risk.
@SparklePetal I fail to see how my being concerned for a child possible choking as being rude or hurtful. And yes anyone can choke on anything. My concern is with the large chunks of food being given to this child.
She's gorgeous! Lovely to see a baby enjoying her food so much :-) Hunnie28, she can clearly cope with eating this way - after all, as you point out, she spat the chicken out as she couldn't deal with it. And I'm sure her Mum knows to do something more appropriate than the Heimlich manoeuver on a baby.
@Hunnie028 given that she actually has been taught to chew, as opposed to being force-fed mush, she's better able to manipulate food than puree-fed babies.
@Hunnie028 By letting her experiment with proper solids from 6 months her mother is actually helping her learn to eat without choking. Babies have what's called a gag reflex that helps keep them safe. As they get older the gag reflex moves further back towards the throat. Give a baby chunks earlier and the gag reflex kicks in and they learn how to chew properly without endangering themselves. Puree fed babies only learn to chew when the gag reflex is much further back so are more likely to choke
Hunnie028 - Can't a puree weaned baby choke when sucking liquid to the back of their throats? can't an adult choke on their dinner? Can't anyone choke on an object they may choose to put in their mouths? When Lily couldn't chew what was in her mouth, she spat it out. This is beacuse she was in control of what went in and out. Rather than making rude comments about people's parenting choices, you ought to do some research into BLW.
I think Lily is gogeous and her feeding skills are fabulous!
