You right , they had flava back then. On beat and complete as a b-boy. Uprock, footwork, power moves, freeze, all on beat. You do have true b-boys around today but you have more acrobats...think about it. Peace.
What I don't like about the breaking I see these days compared to the old clips. Is that old school b-boys seemed to have more rhythm. Like they were dancing to the music.
All I see with new breakers is them trying to pull the biggest moves. Most of the time even though you go WOW that move was great the rest is boring and frankly uninnovative rehashing of old moves. Alot of battles I see are just macho who's got the biggest dick wanking competitions.
With the breaking now the moves are a bit too technical, you lose the sense of admiration. key thing is that RSC had an abundance of style in executing their moves phenomenally well. B Boys today have no style and look shit when they perform...For me there is the one and only rock steady and I dont mean the bs we see now....i mean Kuriyaki (RIP) and the rest of the crew that we see here...SUCH A PITY WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM AND BUCK 4. These guys are the pioneers and my all time favourites.
Gold and stuntz - you're actually BOTH right. On the one hand, breakin' is not as big now, as it was in the 80s (my local park used to be full of kids breakin' on cardboard, back then); and on the other hand, there are now more, and better competitions, than there was in the 80s.
B-boying just isn't the same. Its more about big jams and competitions now. Back then it was part of life and just going straight up clubbing, getting girls, respect etc. Rappers embraced b-boys back then, now , they only want big cars and swimming pools. Sad how hip hip became about rapping only.
Rock Steady were pretty much the kings back then, not the best, but kings. Don't get me wrong they ruled until about 83, but then mad crews srpung up like Incredible Breakers, Scrambin Feet, Fresh Kids, NYC Breakers, and many many more, just some ill ass b-boys. I think becuas eof their touring all the time they lost touch with the new moves etc. But they will always be heroes regardless.
Hey, gold95, if that's true then I appreciate that, because, for me, it's just as important to know the correct, original term and it does matter just as it's important to know where this culture really came from. And yeah, I was astonished to see Doze rock the windmills. Alot of imageries that I've never seen before.
First time seeing this EVER and DAAAAAMN!! lol! I'm not Puerto Rican, but I gots lots, and lots, and lots, and lots, forever respect and love!!! Had a crush on Baby Love, but she did go to college and managed to have a 'normal' life. I wish somehow for Kuri and Buck 4 that events could have changed someway, somehow.
Let me correct you. I'm from NYC and I was around in the early 80s when b-boying was HUGE and Many called turtle float. In fact a lot of bboy back then didn't use "turtle." B-boys named themselves after Floating, such as "Float" from Incredible Breakers, Floatmaster and so on.
Aight well ok if thats what they called it back then. But now since new moves are being invented, the names of moves before have changed. Like what used to be called superman mills are now called body mills for example. Now floats and turtles are different. shouldn't be confused. One is elbows touching hips the other is not. Oh and FYI, bboying is still HUGE. Even more so now than it was in the 80's. There are bigger and better competitions now.
I know its still goes on, but it will never be as big as it was in the 80s. Mind you then, you could go to the biggest clubs like Roxy, Roseland, Funhouse and nothing but breakers. NYC was mega for breakers and then it broke out to the world in 83-85, and then died down. Now its BIG again, but underground for the most part.
I'll name competitions that are goin on now. Freestylesession, International Breakdance Event, Out for Fame, Mighty 4, King of the Ring, Red Bull BC One, oh and of course BATTLE OF THE YEAR. Juss to name a few. These are all worldwide competitions. Freshest kids is a documentary on bboying, and Planet B-boy is another one. This wasn't goin on in the 80's. I disagree. it's bigger now.
Actually they had massive competitions back then. All over tthe world too. Back then you couldn't walk a block without crews breakin on the corner. B-boying was just HUGH back then. There are no clubs like Funhouse, Roxy, Roseland, Danceateria etc where you can go and get down. Its either straight up hip hop or dance. Plus remember, it was brand new to most people. Now its more of a underground sport. I do know of all the jams that go on now.
Bigger now for one main reason, the internet. Internet in the 80's? Nope. Everyone has atleast seen or heard about breakin. Tv shows expose breakin nuff now. Star Search, 30 seconds to fame, So you think you can dance; those are some shows that have recently been on the air or are still goin on. And breakin is a big part of it. Breakin on every street corner probably not done as much now cause there are more indoor places to practise now. That doesn't mean it's more underground now.
Clubs, yeah maybe ur right. Maybe no clubs like Roxy, Funhouse are gonna be around again. But what lacks in clubs are made up for in competitions, and exposure. Back then like you said it was brand new to most. Now alot of the oldskool heads have now began teaching. Creating more interest. More instructional videos are being sold over the internet. I could go on and on. Underground for the most part? No way gold.

yeah exactly. i find it more impressive to see people actually being on time with the beat instead of crazy acrobatic moves.

My favourite out of all of them was Kuriaki. His moves was clean and tight. No offence, they was all good.

Oh, another thing, Kuri's steps are directly what I based my own from. I didn't learn about 6 step until 2002.

That was the shit! I didn't know Doze had windmill. It still doesn't look dated to me. Ken Swift is still my favourite Bboy.

FYI. Its called turtle, or some referred to it as float.
gold95 5 years ago
Naw juss a turtle. a Float is basically one hand to the other but in planche position. it's turtle cause his elbows touch his hips while spinning
