The space requirements of the1978 mirror setup excluded the possibility of them using smaller theaters, which led to the shows being hosted in larger venues that, at that time, the band couldn't fill. For Genesis fans this had the very pleasant side effect of being able to walk right up to the front to see the show. In particular, Phil looked around at the mostly empty arena and said "tonight we only let in our friends".
HMMM .... I have a 400ft reel of sound super 8mm film of this tour I shot in 78 in Columbus Ohio. The video is much brighter than this but audio is not very good ... but it is there! Didn't think anyone would want to see it due to low quality of audio and video by today's standards. Maybe I'll get it out of the can to transfer anyway!
@unclefestive I heard that they played two nights there and at one of them they played Many too Many, I wonder if thats true... And although the video is bad, please share it. better than nothing :)
I have given my films to Adam of the Genesis Museum near Cleveland and he is in the process now of digitizing the footage and cleaning it up as best he can. When he gets done, I will, or he will upload some of it to share with all of you! Thanks for all the emails and comments encouraging me to get this done !
I saw this tour! and the one before it and the ones after it! I really do miss seeing a light show like these guys put on. Those who saw them know, those who didnt you missed something.
I saw this show in Maastricht in 1978, 18 years old. Remember that we drove to the concert in a white VW kever (beetle) with a cassetterecorder in it, playing seconds out.
It was my first Genesis concert. Every time I think of it, I get a warm feeling inside and a smile on my face...
@Laserkev This can't really be, on the Japan Proshot Video there are no mirrors, and here there is , And I think I recognize Fontain of Salmacis in this Video, which wasnt played in Japan. Just a guess of me :)
I wish I REALLY would've been old enough to see this show! This is the version I come closest to understanding all the lyrics...I just think reading them is cheating some how...Thank you very much for this!
I recall this tour very well. I was at the Los Angeles show in April 1978 where there was no applause when they finsihed the Cinema Show. Everyone wanted them to play Suppers Ready, and they knew it wasn't coming when Phil did his story of Romeo & Juilet while they were at the drive-in theater. I sat at the side of the stage, and I applauded them. Phil thanked me, and I said to him, "This could only happen in Los Angeles. Tony had Phil tell the audience what I said, and I was booed for it!
Everyone should go to the Musical Box website and lcik on the Theo link. Theo was their light, visual effects man. He started with the Lamb and did the Mirrors too! Now he's doing the musical box.
Thank you Magog! I've spent hours watching the rare stuff you've posted. I love it all! Thank you for providing this rare stuff to the masses....more please !! :-)
Saw rhe mirrors tour in Oakland, Ca. in '81 (I presume, can't remember the exact year). I distinctly remember the effect during "In the Cage". No band could match sound quality, stage presence, lighting and overall effort of a live performance.
I was front row at the old OMNI in Atlanta for this one.Backstage with them at the Fox on the Duke tour. I saw them with Peter for the Selling tour at the Fox, and the Lamb tour at the Atlanta Civic Center.:) Went to all their concerts except the last one.:(
Man, that sucks.. (missing the recent TIOA series of shows, i mean.) The 2007 tour was the first chance i got to see them after being a major fan all my life. Wished they would've played more stuff from the Hackett/Gabriel era, honestly -- but getting to see them live (and the DVD!) was more than i could have ever hoped for! ^_^ (Oh, and their newer stage set up really was amazing, but i would have loved to see that Vari-lights/mirrors combination!.. :-)
There are some publishers in Italy that are putting out some great note-for-note sheet music for some of the older albums. I bought the book for "Foxtrot" and aim to get the "Lamb" book next (once i can afford that one!) At least there's still some hope that Pete might join them for at least a one-off show one of these days...
whish these had sound, but it's great to see the mirrors. I acutually meet them on this tour at a record store called "Peaches Records and Tapes" on a Saturday morning, the day of the show here in Cincinnati.
I remember Peaches on Colerain long, long ago.. ;-) Was that the one? It was a nice record store. Just happened to be driving by that exit a couple of hours ago actually, though i don't always get out that way..

Those were the times when there was this special feeling/aura in Genesis´ music - especially live. From mid 80s it it became more and more sterile.

I thought Peter would show up in Rome...The Italians were always the biggest supports. Maybe sometime in teh future?
