I've had a lot of luck just planting romaine right into the ground (then you don't have to worry about transplanting), but then I live in Florida where frost is rare. However, even with the harsher than average frost we had this January, the romaine did really well (it's about the only thing in the garden that isn't brown right now).
yes i agree with meseeutube, you are planting them too close, unless of course yours never grow as wonderfully as mine, then you don't need that much space in betweem, right?
I bought mine just like this from the store. I think you are planting them to close together in the ground. I planted mine about 12 inches apart. My romaine have grown to at least 12 inches across. They are humoungous now ! See my video and see.

an amature would think that your raised beds dont have two feet of fluf under then it evens it out in the end.
