You know whats funny? So many people think any hit where the head moves or there's a concussion is a headshot.

A. Whiplash, ever heard of it?

B. Incidental contact isn't the hitters fault.

C. Heads hitting the ice contributes a lot to concussions, that's an unyielding, hard surface.

The NHL is going a bit overboard. Though I'm glad to see a greater degree of consistency (until the Sutton suspension/Wolski non-suspension), kids should still be taught to keep their heads up.

Scott Stevens will forever be my favourite player of all time because he and players like him kept Hockey what it SHOULD be.

Stevens was capable of the dirty hit, sure, but he threw many more perfectly clean shoulder hits. He put the fear of god in to any forward trying to cross his blueline. That sort of physicality just doesn't exist anymore in the NHL and that's a bad thing. The more rules there are, the more the players endanger themselves. Players coming out of the NCAA can't control their sticks because everyone is running around with a full cage, for example.

It's fair to say that regardless who watches this video, people will disagree. In my opinion, there is one way of watching a video such as this: Old NHL rules allowed a player to hit in this fashion and it was very legal, hence people bitching back and fourth at each other about "illegal" or "legal" hits is very counter productive because it is a redundent argument. @NHLArchive I agree 100%. The majority of Stevens hits were clean leading with the shoulder. Its not his fault people were dumb enough to skate with their heads down knowing full well that the best hitter the game had ever seen was on the ice.

It sucks that some guys got hurt from those hits, but you have to keep your head up. Look at Kariya admiring his pass forever and gets drilled for it. If he's paying attention after the pass, he easily dodges Stevens.

I miss Scott Stevens, one of my favorites of all time. I also love that you were able to get so much footage - that is impressive. Notice how how devastating he was with the shoulder. Stevens made legal shoulder hits a veritable art form. When he played, he "owned" the defensive blue line. It's pretty scary to ponder. Lining up an incoming forward  with a head of speed isn't easy, and if you miss, you goaltender is all alone.

Stevens is exactly what was wrong with the NHL through the 90's, nothing manly or competitive about hitting the unsuspecting puck carrier. People say keep your head up, Well if players kept ther head up all the time, looking for the cheap shot like that, Hockey would have  been even more boring through the 90's than it was. You can make a decent play without knowing where the puck is. The NHL (neanderthal) League is coming around, but as usual, ALOT slower than the other major sports.
