Beautiful :) It's songs like this that remind us of the beauty of Ireland especially in these hard times. Like Kelly is an absolute legend. Keep on listening to these amazing songs and ignore the trash that this generation has manufactured.
This is Luke at the top of any tree, this is a great song sung with such feeling by a great man. I* am sure there are millions of people who would be near to tears listening to Luke. Magic stuff.
Yeah thanks for all your efforts kellyoneill, much appreciated. Trying to learn this song at the moment. Some of my other favourites of Luke's include The Lifeboat Mona, The Springhill Mining Disaster, Monto, Raglan Road, The Black Velvet Band, The Button Pusher, The Foggy Dew, wow the list grows so quickly! It's up to our generation to keep this music alive and you're doing a great job.
Voice wise Luke is on a different plane to all other irish singers. We will never ever see his like again. I saw him a lot in his early career and I was always amazed at how easily he sang song others would later butcher. Many of the so called great songs by reputed great sonwriters were made great by Luke singing them. He was the talent which made these songs great. He could have sang anything and we would have listened. Even now I am in awe of his talent.
You must be very young to say this as obviously you have never really listened to Luke singing. Listen to Luke sing then come back and apoligise for you silliness. either that or you are tone deaf.
he sang this on the late late show i think and wore a flat cap if i remember , did not look to good but the performance came from the heart , almost like he knew it was goodbye , what a man what a voice , we'll never see the likes of him again
I used to drive a bus in Dublin many many moons ago...he got on the bus I was driving one day and tipped his hat to me...thats my claim to fame. without doubt one of the greatest folk singers that ever lived!!!
That's just how he was. Luke was Luke - just a wonderful person - who lit up any stage (and made my knees weak when he stood in front of me!... and he knew it! ha)! I often wonder if he realised just HOW great he was! Kell' - have you seen my photos yet?? SA
yet "song for ireland" is also exceptional "first song I ever heard sung by luke kelly was "peggy gordon" and that's what made me a luke kelly fan but that's just because it's sung great but ultimately "song for ireland" and "the sun is burning" would be on par with each other in my opinion....
listening to it now, it's beautiful. lol I was talking to an irish backpacker the other day he was amazed that I was australian and had heard of luke kelly
parcel of rogues was good, The Unquiet Grave was pretty average I thought, I can't believe people like simon and garfunkles version of the the sun is burning better luke kellys is art thier's is blasphemy compared to luke version
kellyoneill fair play to you. This is the best version of this song sung by Luke. His voice is so strong here God rest him.Would I be right in saying this was much earlier than the other two versions.
no the best version has to be his last live performance! it is incredible, the diction, the passion, everything about it is outstanding. have a real listen to it first
