Can someone explain to me why if a guitar is playing in the key of E a harmonica in the key of A sounds so good? Would an Am harmonica work for a tune in the key of Em?
Went through this third video and dang you helped me a lot. Other videos aren't as instructive but you helped me get what I refer to as the 'wah' notes, and though I'm not ready to get some of the intricate note progressions you have shown me, I'm much more confident. I've watched a lot of videos from professionals and it's hard to believe you're so young and so professional. I'm ready to stop being a hack and you're going to help.
I can bend 1 really well, the other 9 holes seem to not want to bend with the same technique, all i get is a tone shift from the resonation of my mouth, not even a semitone!
i watched your videos on bending they are really very nice.i really want urgent help from you.i want DRAW SCRAPER tool.kindly arrange one for me either give me details from where i can get.,i'll paypal you whatever the cost for that.i tried contacting richard sleigh ,but unfortunately i am not getting any reply from him.please help me.FYI i live in india.

@Seekari Draw is an inhale correct. Though this comment was made 3 weeks ago I'm sure you've figured it out by now. If you google Harmonica Beginner or Harmonica Lessons you should find some good free material to get you started.
hi rici it's cain from north wales u.k. these are excellent uploads bravo to you and gussow you both should get together again and do some pay per view vids. i need some help with a bit of sonny terry riffs as my speeds a bit to slow at the moment and need a little push shove to help myself out? also any tips with these bends as i can do them all but that cheecky 3rd hole i just cant pick and chose a whole or semi step without firstly blowing a whole step and a half and them re-adjusting.
If you haven't checked lately, Mr. Ricci is rated as one of the BEST harp players in the WORLD these days. Try searching JASON RICCI and sort by NEWEST and I think you'll see a slight change in the past 5 years.
What's with all the Hating anyway?
These videos helped me GREATLY in learning the Harp. I've been playing just under 1 year and am already fronting my band playing MS Sax. If u don't like the vids you don't gotta watch
If you have a random guy a blues harp and a song and ask: find out in which key the song is. He will never know. He won't even know where your talking about. You need to know keys you need to play scales long enough so you hear them in your head. The 12 note scale is invented. It just western music, Its not all there is. So there is no way your born with a 12 note scale in your head. You need to learn it first in order to recognize music.
If you're playing songs from a book, yeah I agree with you. But I've never played harp from a book, I've sat down next to a guitar player, knowing nothing about guitar, and listened. Then played a little. I knew what key he was in from the sound and I could pick up on the changes, even if I didn't know it was I IV V, I knew the "size" of the interval, and could hack through until I had it, then jam. No solid theory there, just desire.
Jason, your harp tone sounds like a kitten pissing into a rusty oil can. Seriously, stop trying to give lessons on something you cannot properly do yourself.
hahaha, rocket881's a/c closed. No wonder..he either finally saw a few of Jason's videos with New Blood and realized he'd made a complete idiot out of himself here..or he's the same hater who's changed names a few times on other of J's vids. No loss. What a fool. FTR, Jason Ricci: nominated yet again for BMA award as harmonica player of the year. Done with the Devil (Latest CD) nominated as best Album. The band just came off the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise where they ROCKED! :)
I've been playing music for over 30 years, and I've never learned music theory. Don't tell me that you need music theory to play by ear, cuz I KNOW you're wrong.
Dreamseeking: do a google search for "Cross Harp Chart"- it's a list of the blues keys and the harp keys you need to play "cross harp" - all you really need to know is the key you're playing in, and the cross harp chart. Get your basic technique down, and check out Jason's videos...after that, well, the skie's the limit.
Thanks <<<< I have wanted to learn Harmonica, I have been playing for years but off key,,, lol. I always thought it was easy, But,,,,It is very difficult, I don't have any musicle educatation, So I was hoping to plqay by ear, But, it;s not as easy as it looks.
You still need to know music theory if you want to play 'by ear'. Else its just retarted, its like trowing someone on a soccerfield why doesn't have a clue on what to do and starts punching and biting the ball.
Playing by ear means that you know so much about theory, scales, that you recognize intervals that you master all those things and can use them without thinkin' bout it (like a feeling) and not have to play from a music sheet.
No, I think it can be learned, at least to a point. People with little musical ability or talent can, with a lot of practice and listening, develop a pretty good feel for music in their head. It'll be harder, but possible. Old basketball saying: "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."
your a fucking angry little douche bag arent ya! whats a matter daddy didnt hug you enough when you were a little girl ........you cant play harp for shit stick to knitting
Thanks very much for this highly informative lesson sir,
And for pointing out the possibility of moving your riffs up an octave
by overblows. Somehow only the 6 overblow never been a problem for me,however didnt make much use of it either. Your story encouraged me to do a little research, I understand now, its the blue 3rd!
P.S. If you ever feel so inclined or have a spare moment, check out my first video, if you give me a word of encouragement or criticism, I'd consider it an honor. Keep up the good work, you're awesome!!!
Hey Jason, thanks a lot for all your output, has been helping me a lot, though I have to fight the urge to feel severely intimidated, you've probably forgotten more about harp than I'll ever learn. Well, I won't give up hope! I love/covet your breathing control and impeccable timing! And your clean notes.
Hi Jason, I`ve watched all your videos and I swear, I`ve never heard playing like this (although I`ve heard Sugar Blue and Howard Levy`s playing). Thanks from Bulgaria. Waiting for your next video.
Jason, speaking of bending, at the Bean Blossom seminar you mentioned pitch vibrato as a another form of vibrato. Is pitch vibrato a fast pucker or fast bend? I have been doing this for several years but have never heard anyone discuss it.
Too bad you never released this, I would have bought it. I think the best tips you have are bending into notes and making the great point about call and response in 2 octaves. Definately a trademark move of yours :p

so a draw is if u inhale and a blow is if you breath out.
so draw 2 means your on the second hole breathing in.
am i right or do i got it all wrong.
can someone pls explain me all these terms i am new with the harmonica.
overblow?
2 draw?
I really would apreciate it if someone can give me a link of a site with explanations and hints about the harmonica.

Anybody knows why my one draw (E harp) bends a whole step? According to him it should only do half. Or does it depend on what tone it is?
Thanks

I learned blues harp long before I learned theory. Music is either in your head or it isn't.

I don't mean knowing everything about theory. But knowing about keys and scales makes jammin a lot easier.

Don't understand. I'm using tongue blocking and can't move my tongue to bend the node, or I will start to play more than one holes...
Or do you switch to lip pursing when you want to bend?
Thanks!

tongue blocking requires a different approach to bend.

I still don't getting it! Everybody says "you need to use your tongue to make the air to go down" and other helpless things, and what does it means?!
Thanks :P
NirHL 3 years ago
try this; tilt the harmonica towards you and draw at the same time, you will hear the air flow slow down thus lowering the tone.
I hope this helps
