Phaedrus and his knife. With that kind of analytical mind you could dissect any word in the English vocabulary and harp on it's relation to other words. I think he recieved an answer and then decided that it was too simple.
I am not very smart, but I did manage to finish college, a BA degree. If you don't have at least a bachelors, you can't understand Zen and the Art of Motocycle Maintenance. There are so many references to the basic four year liberal arts degree material. I worked in quality for 21 years at Chrysler. I was always pushing Metaphysics of Quality ideas onto the production people. read somewhere that there is a university over in England that has a PhD program in MOQ. There is one graduate.
Somehow I'm reminded of a dinner at an old girlfriend's house years ago, when her mother turned to her and said, (referring to me) " il mange avec fury". Suffice to say, Robert, too, seemed hungry for, something.
I prefer the story-lines. The rest is self-indulgence. imo.
I also get the impression that he needed to prove something to someone,
I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong, but I never found the argument made in the book about quality to be of much substance. Does Quality exist? I think it only exists when applied to a given context. It is an attribute we see in something that says, "this is a good example of x". For example, if examining a metal, quality might be the purity. But when this same metal is to be used to build a motorcycle, then the quality is contingent on its utility. To say quality exists means nothing.
It starts like a nice story but then delves deeply into certain concepts that most people simply wont care abt. But some parts were really enlightening.
@vk08 Im 60 and have just finished reading this book for the sixed and last time,he mentions ego and I think this whole book is more about ego than quality, this book was written by a person so full of himself that it sent him crazy. a book that set out to baffle the reader with bullshit but this time it did not work, Its not anything special at all just a ratteling of words.
I think, it's one of those books lots of poeple have read, but very few could honestly say they understood. I can see why so many publishers passed on it. It's a tough read. I really wanted to like it, but found the multipul narratives and tangential stuff confusing. Maybe, I'll try again one day...
@gyoza007 I am listening to the audiobook as I walk my 10 miles back and to the gym each day and while I am only half way through it I think I understand it so far. I tried to read the book but as usual things get in the way but on your travels in the car to work its a great way to use that time in a meaningful way.
@gyoza007 No it wont work,I read this book four times over thirty years, it is the story about a mans ego, who has set out to proove that words are stronger than emotion, I now don't like this book, things just happen that way.
Nice vid :D - But I dunno... it lacks most of the reasoning for pirsig's idea of 'quality'. It's like "gimme a main idea of the book's main theme in n sentences".
I'd have liked it much more if you could give a bit more wide picture of it.
It wasn't bad, but you could have said at least how this whole thing works. Anyway, nice vid and let's see you explain a bit more this whole quality concept. :D

Read it 30+ years ago. It was a tough read then.
Just finished the 19th chapter now.

Please remove the apostrophe from "It's question" near the beginning. I liked your video, beautiful pictures.

@gyoza007 agreed.
the author should have strived to write more simply and could have gotten alot of help if he was hardworking enough to do more re-writes...
but he was trapped in a maze of himself which ultimately drove him nutty...
like all things, be moderate.

I think 'quality' is nothing but the degree of awareness of consciousness!

No quality is very simple you only can see our touch it. but when you do it makes you feel good
critchley3819 2 years ago
is reality on what you can measure? I'm not sure he says that. Can you measure love? Is love real?
Nice video though!
