  • Great piece on Hula, originally produced in the mid-1980's--folks like Aunty Kaui Zuttermeister, Darrell Lupenui and Frank Palani Kahala who are no longer on this earth are in this video.

However, thumbs way down for the unacceptable pronunciation and spelling of many of the Hawaiian words and names....National Geographic, what?

  • I've recently started taking hula auana dance classes and I love it! I'd do Hula Kahiko (traditional hula) if I were younger and had better knees. Hula is a beautiful expression of Hawaiian/Pacific Island culture, and should be regarded just as seriously and legitimately as any other cultural dance form IMO. Thanks Natl Geo for doing that!

  • I used to hula :) I miss it so much

  • Hula competition are no joke ! The person who calls them ”gay guys” don’t have a clue on the Hawaiian culture, or any culture. I’m sure most of the guys didn’t want to wear the Warrior clothing, But the Pride of the Hawaiian Culture was the key . “Hawaiian Pride”.Just closed minded people that has no Cultural Pride will put down everything.Hawaiian/American Pride-Standing when the American Flag is raised or National Anthem is played. some say gay, I say Pride...Gay is a culture all it's self .

  • @hawaiianstylin And in ancient Hawai'i there were no such thing as gay phobia, or typical sex at all, men women and what ever u were or liked was accepted!

  • great stuff! i laugh @ all of the hateful comments and so should you!

  • Mamma mia! che meravigliosa danza!

  • Fortunately, with the Hawaiian Renaissance in the early 1970's, the Hawaiian language is no longer in danger of extinction. Unfortunately, A'uana is endangered with the infection of Reggae.

  • i admit the male costumes seem to me abit weird because ive never seen anything like it.

But i hope they will treasure their traditions and they will never end up like the rest of the suposed civilised world.

Im glad hula went underground when the christians arived ( im one), its sad to know that many things of the ancient world were lost because of the intolerance of christians

  • @rurounisld U can't compare what they were w what u are used to from ur culture and how we live today, in the past it was just clothes, not a thong, not a boxer, nothing just clothing, and before the white came, they didn't wear anything, except when having a ceremony!

  • @Gille87 well modern ppl will always try to compare things, but i agree that we cant generally compare to them.

Many civilizations used to live naked in antiquity even those among the most sophisticated like Greeks.

  • i love dancing hula, it gives me a whole ne apricitation for my culture<3

  • What's wrong with you people? How can you write such awful stuff on a page dedicated to a beautiful dance from a nearly destroyed culture. Have some respect for others and yourselves!

  • @thestraniero Amen! People are just ridiculous in their prejudicial comments sometimes.

  • Hey, These people who have no culture of their own, and talk shit, can go to hell, You don't like it Motherfucker you can lick my nuts, I dont give a shit about your fuckin opinion and yo mamas opinion, Cuz really if it was up to me Id put a bullet in your fuckin pelau brain, shove that up your ass , As you Haoles Say B ach

  • I live on kauai and take hula and there are ony 5 ladies snd 7 men. Only men usually (usually not like men only) dance.

  • El Hula es una forma de vida y un refugio para quienes participamos de ella... El hula una comunión perfecta entre el alma, el cuerpo, la mente y la música. para rendir culto a la naturaleza y contar una historia...

  • i like apples and amoish rap

  • @funkedafied143 I know, right? I hate how people think they can just move somewhere for a year and claim to be a native. They don't bother learning a lot about the customs, or just come knowing very little about it. Or those morons that only want to learn the curse words. Maybe they should try to actually learn the language and avoid looking like a fool. The best thing about people that are actually from the islands is that we carry an authenticity about who we are as a people, and our culture.

  • @Calibwai

But its hard know-a-days to physically identify a non-Hawaiian to a real one. My pure blooded Hawaiian Father and my Filipino mother made a really tall big-boned-Filipino-looking son. haha BUT I don't disagree or agree with you bro. I know a lot of non-Hawaiians who are impostors and "act" like they know it all.

  • These Dances & the Surfing were banned because they were Naked. How UnGodly, huh. I read in a Hawaiian Autobiography, the Hula was performed completely Naked, this was the way of showing Gratitude to their Gods, for all of the good bestowed upon them. Look for another book called "And Now There Are None"

  • Bloody Christian Missionaries, why did they have to travel the globe imposing their nonsense on others and generally being a pain in the arse? I heard that in Hawai'i they also tried to ban the native Hawaiians from surfing because they thought it was ungodly. I don't know why the Hawaiian King and his people didn't just tell them to fuck off.

  • what show is this?

  • european missionaries in early days were dumb fuks..dnt know nothing about culture..the natives or so called "savages" should speard them in da fukn face n feed em to da sharks

  • @vkdime73 they were haters too, european missionaries were probably mad coz their women can't move they're stiff hips that way, what a pity to come over to someone else's land and tell them how to live or such; they are the "savages" if you ask me.....

  • @denisprowl I so agree with what you say. Colonialism has ruined many cultures and it sickens me to see what a foreign influence can do to this most beautiful dance. Not just the dance of course, but the Hawaiin culture as a whole has been denigrated by western or American so called values. I hope that Hawaiians, the real Hawaiins will shine through one day. Kia Ora.

  • RELIGION IS FLAWED ONLY BECAUSE MEN ARE FLAWED.

I dont have a religion. i have a spiritual relationship with god. Men who are ignorant destroys culture. therefore, religious men are dangerous.

This was great!! I am half hawaiian and half filipino. i dont know much about my hawaiian culture primarly because i live in the main land and I only live with my filipino side. but I do dance hula. this was very informative and it made me research more about my heritiage. mahalo nui. ^_^

  • @Calibwai Just because they dance Hula does not mean they think they are Hawaiian. And some kids are mixed. As long as the culture, spirit, and dance is kept alive and thriving correctly, of course. I don't see the problem.

  • @Calibwai I agree dont they have their on culture always want to copy others

  • this fuckin lady should pronounce the damn words right! lol

  • @sophie96792 haha "hee-lau"? that was the one that stood out the most to me

  • Christ Jesus never condemns, only loves the people. The religious zealots of history did not and do not today understand. Christ stated, "Let he among you who is without sin cast the first stone." Does that sound like He would ban a beautiful dance? We listen to insane zealots and pontiffs and assume they speak for God; hardly. Seek Him (GOD) and understand for yourself.

  • @InquiareOnly alot of people mis understand the man who is ignorantly called jesus christ

this is also the fault of religion.

RELIGION IS NOTHING BUT A JOURNEY OF FALSE SPIRITUALITY.

IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT TRUE SPIRITUALITY, YOU SHOULD START BY LEARNING ABOUT THE SMALLER THINGS SUCH AS THIS VERY DANCE, THE HULA

LEARN WHAT EVERYTHING ONCE WAS BEFORE THIS JESUS (ZUES) CHARACTER APPEARED.

  • @InquiareOnly well said

  • it is hard to believe that the missionary culture achieved the banning of the hula for 60 years!

  • religion sucks, just think, before the "one" god, we got along with ?? hundreds of gods, we understood the land better and we weren't killing the only planet that humans can live on!

  • The missionaries should worry about a group of people I heard about who worship an invisible man who lives in the clouds and watches everything we do and if we do something he doesn't like then he'll make us suffer in agonizing pain for all eternity and his son was a cannibal.

  • ill be going to hawaii soon.

  • Hula is the best dance that you can ever dance.

  • working as as team .

  • of course Christians thought something this beaitfull could be outlandish =_= Thankfully they know more about them now

  • Damn the evil missionaries

  • Men were the first to do the hula before going to war in ancient times.

  • 1. Muslims has always used violence to spread their religion. Jesus Christ was peaceful while Muhammad led armies! If you don't know that you have not read the history books.

    2. There are an aweful lot of people in the world that are being fed, clothed and medicated because of the efforts of Christian missionaries. I didn't see Iran or Saudi Arabia doing much for Haiti. . .

  • Hula was originally only allowed to be preformed by men. This is bullshit.

  • @AppleCherryBomb did you not listen to this video? it was created by two women (according to legend) one of whom was a goddess.

  • @h9stjarr We both know Hawaiian legends are entirely false. I know my facts. In early Hawaiian culture, women were not allowed to hula.

  • @AppleCherryBomb as scientifically "false" as they may be, the spirit of those legends and the importance of the lessons we can glean from them is what matters and is what makes these dances so historically and culturally valuable.

  • @AppleCherryBomb and also, are you suggesting that ancient hawaiian men were misogynistic pigs? what is your point here? I'm sure the men were protecting their women and their land, because mothers are naturally the more dominant nurturer.

  • @h9stjarr Honestly. Why are you attacking random comments? Also, I implied nothing about Hawaiian men being sexist. And by the way, if you're going to start a pointless argument, check your facts first and learn how to put up a good fight.

  • @h9stjarr yes, but....

It still was not allowed for women to do the hula. It's a fact. a lot of kumu hula's told this. Firt the women sat down an watch'd the men dance...

Everywhere in de world you see sexism...

  • They also forgot to mention that it's not only halau's from Hawai'i that perform, they invite the best ones from the mainland and Japan as well.

  • Great topic, important video, yet sad that the narrator was tremendously off on pronouncing Hawaiian terms and names....not good for National Geographic.

This piece came out around 1986!

  • fucking christians

  • @romeoblackheart1989

    Your name speaks volumes ...

  • why is it always the christian missionaries fuckin shit up lol

  • KUMU PALANI KAHALA, you are very much missed......I remember......... TU!! GENTLEMEN OF MALUIKEAO FOREVER!!!

  • ♥ Malama Pono ♥

  • they forgot to mention that Hi'iaka was beleived to be a goddess and Hopoe was a minor goddess.

And that Hi'iaka is Pele the fire godess' little sister.

  • I Love the Merrie Monarch !! I've been there twice , and Love doing hlua!

  • @fasiake no. he didn't. He was born in Kohala on Hawai'i in Hawai'i.

  • E HAWAI'I AU, MAU A MAU!!

    i love hula.

  • 2:39... Hell No.

  • hahahaah that caught me by surprise

  • @aquafishsoup and that's why the missionaries banned the hula. because they didn't understand why another person would wear so little and move so provocatively.

  • beautiful!

  • oh my god!!!!

    this is wonderful!!!

    i love hula!!

  • aLooOoooHa....bEauTiFUl CUltUrA (-8....love HuLa

  • The narrator isn't even trying to pronounce the names. She needs to go. NG did a terrible job!

  • Queen Kekumani? Who's that? That's at 1 minute into the video. Did she mean to say Kaahumanu?

  • Hawaiian culture will live on.

  • Aloha `âina!

May God, bless Hawaii, Yes long live our Hawaiian culture...E ola ka'olelo Hawai'i

    e mālama pono!

  • treasures indeed! Palani Kahala, Darrel Lupenui, Kaui Zuttermister! and one of the unforgettable performances of the men of Darrel at Merrie Monarch Stage

  • long live that hawaiian culture long live the people

  • Long live real Hawaiian Culture!

  • Why does "Zuttermeister" sound so German?

    It's her name, right?

Probably married a German... or Austrian.

  • Hawaii recieved so many people from all around the world since the discovery that japaneese, philipino, korean, portugueese, german, mexican, from all around started to arrive so Ka'ui was raised by his auncle a great hula master Sam Pua Ha'aheo who raised her in hula even her last name is foreigner her root is hawaian and her daughters continue the tradition.

  • 43217...i dunno if Zuttermeister is her married name or not. But what makes you think that Hawaiians can't have a non-Hawaiian family name? Esp. a married one.

  • Because if there's no non-Hawaiian in the family tree where should the non-Hawaiian name come from if not from marriage?

Concerning this particular case I did say that I think that she (quoting myself) "Probably married a German... or Austrian."

There's nothing indecent in the name... I just thought it was remarkable, half the globe away from central Europe.

  • You called them "gay guys" - doing traditional dances in traditional clothes does not make you gay. These costumes and dances are centuries old.

  • Then why did you click it dumbass

  • Wearing ancient costumes does not make you gay, idiot.

  • haha you're stupid.

  • You are retarded. They aren't gay. Because of this dancing, they probably pull more pussy than you do, because this shit is hard. And judging by your name, you would want to see gay guys dancing in yellow thongs. Too bad you looked in the wrong place.

  • lol couldnt have said it better. men that dance hulas soooooooo sexi. I LOVE IT.

  • @chubbypeckerwood Because you're a chubby peckerwood who likes looking at guys in yellow thongs? stupidass get a grip and fuck off.

  • 面白い!

  • tök jól mozogna :)

  • i love this so much. i actually understand now! if anyone gets a chance they should try it cuz its tons of fun and pretty interesting to learn about wat the song means.

  • Those damn christian missionaries of 1820....I knew those cats were up to no good.

Glad those pretty girls and guys can wear flowers, express their culture, and have the instructor say that the dancing means very little to them.

  • Lelo and Stitch was a good movie.

  • lol, I was thinking the same thing.

  • It must have been awkward when they had to perform hula in secret. A tall task I assume, what with all the banging sticks involved.

  • Gawd Xtinas really have destroyed so many societys and cultures i cant believe i was brainwashed into it for so long

  • i hope hula and hawaiian culture never disappears. My best vacation was in hawaii.

  • my love

  • hawaii!

  • Religion destroys cultures! I Visited Kenya and, learned that the natives wishing to go to school (run by religious groups) were given christian names and not allowed to practice in their traditional culture. These religious mores are not limited to Hawaii and Kenya, they are global. It is my dream that religion will be a thing in the past. Though, as long as there are people not willing to study and/or live in a state of reality we will always have their scare tactics and outrageous idealisms.

  • I know, its sad ... i don't understand why people can't just run schools and give aid with out trying to get something out of it namely converting people to Christianity. I don't like christian missionaries at all.

  • although i do believe that some religious groups are very wrong but i do not agree that all religious groups are like that. religion was created to give everything a meaning and where everything comes from.there are many different point of views of that certain subject but you cannot say that it is a tactic, believing in religion is like believing in a moral you have and saying it was created out of fear and that all religious groups are trying to depict culture is being bias

  • @KARIN094 Wow .. to bad so many people can't just comment on the videos they see on Youtube, without social comments - but since you brought it up. It's true some religions have destroyed culture and some have helped cultures to survive. You have a dream the religion would be a thing of the past .. and my dream is that you would come to a knowledge of the truth. I'm curious .. what would you have us "study" and what reality should we live in .. yours?

  • @KARIN094 boy....you must be reaaallllly smart.

  • @KARIN094 I totaly agree with you.

  • @KARIN094

    i agree....i agree....i agree

    big religions are only violence

  • @KARIN094 do native religions destroy cultures? I suppose those who had Christianity (or whatever) imposed upon them had their own religious beliefs as well. Maybe imperialism and arrogance and cruelty and selfishness destroy cultures, including one's own internal culture of decency. :(

  • @bisakhadasi I agree, that's the real problem. Selfish pride.

  • @KARIN094

Here's the thing. Religion is ALWAYS the foundation of a culture, so really you wouldn't have these cultures in the first place if it weren't for religious belief. These dances and traditions are based around worship and religious practice, and it is religion that gives them their meaning.

We humans live by faith; anything less is impossible. 'Reality' is based around personal experience, no matter who you are. Personal experience is subjective. Science is statistics, not truth.

  • @jstolesomething

    Religion isn't a truth either.

  • @MisterTiime I'm not necessarily saying it is. I'm just saying that it isn't automatically bad. It is what it is; the foundation of culture.

  • @jstolesomething (not a destroyer of culture. the destroyer of culture is the pride of individuals)

  • @KARIN094 You are so right when Americans try to christiantise everyone they conquere they destroy their culture, just to control them

  • another great feat of christianity trying to ban this beautiful artform...

  • Comment removed

  • only christians would try to ban a dance.

you go hula people, it is sooo cool to see the dances as well as know youre keeping your heritage alive.

as for the man thongs, not so much.....

  • no so do would muslims & any other religion that holds skin exposure to be sinful

  • But Muslims didn't go around like the Christians do & decimate other cultures.

  • wtf have u ever read the history on islam? their just as violent and culturally destuctive as any has been

  • "they're" just as violent but again, as I said, they didn't go around like the Christians did & STILL DO. Today, we have the results of christianity, look at all the indigeneous people today? Why else would they form an organization called WIPCE - World Indigenous People Conference on Education?

  • yes they did and they still do.

  • yay!

i live on oahu, and in elementary to 7th we were taught hula, and it was fun :)

  • Cool!!!Hula Rocks!!

  • btw i was born and raised in hawaii and have been around hula all my life so anybody wants to discuss or has questions just let me know and i'd be more than happy to oblige. but please keep comments tasteful, because here we're talking about an essential part of an ancient culture that many of my ancestors died to protect.

    thanks.

  • hey :)

i think it's just amazing that you're born in this very beautiful country with its lovely traditions ^_^

  • and for anybody who thinks hula is about pretty girls in coconut bras, please educate yourself. for the youth, hula is one of the toughest activities out there, and indeed children/adolescents who dance hula are some of the fittest people in hawaii. come visit if you don't believe me.

also, the merrie monarch festival doesn't just feature halau from the islands, there's groups from california, alaska, australia, argentina, hell even japan and the netherlands compete in the festival.
