  • no Death no life

  • Opeth FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!! \m/

  • Tool...

  • I need to know a band name that play the same as symphony x music style and playing

Please reply as soon as possible

  • Check out Haken, Riverside and Porcupine tree.....and Pain of Salvation

  • Wheres protest the hero!?

  • Spastic Ink will own all your "progressive metal" bands. And Ron Jarzombek will own Petrucci any day. Also nobody can stand among Bobby Jarzombek.

  • good list. especially opeth. in my opinion the best. except for maybe steven wilson. sad to c he didnt make it. but really glad u got spiral architect and dan swano. check out my song on my page. its prog metal as well. not the best quality

  • I just found this video again, and the random turn into insanity made me LOL and chuckle. Some people just have that gift of humor that brightens our days...bless them.

  • Yeah Dream Theater!!!

  • no queensryche,gojira, and death?????

  • Yeah! So "MM" a Melomaniac Metal...Like me... Yes it's so fucking good!... Blotted Science... Alex Webster, (Cannibal Corpse), Chris Adler (Lamb of God), Ron Jarzombek (Gordian Knot Progressive Metal)...

  • Good song for Dream Theater, but it doesnt really show at all what theyve sounded like for the past 10 years

  • Shadow Gallery sounds to me like a progressive version of megadeth XD

  • Protest the Hero???

  • I like how Mastodon is not in that list.

  • Psychotic Waltz didn't change their name to Deadsoul Tribe. Their singer Buddy Lackey a.k.a. Devon Graves left the band and founded Deadsoul Tribe. Now PW are reunited, while DST have called it quits, unfortunately. They were awesome. One of my all time greats.

  • X Opus and their CD 'The Epiphany'...classic prog metal

  • Love the way you make videos. Great bands too. You helped me pick quite some good albums to listen to. ;)

  • check out Gorguts and Gojira

  • where is Ark??, a great prog metal. with the best vocalist Jorn Lande

  • You have to check Delta, a chilean Prog Metal band ;)

  • Glad you included Dan Swano, but I think you should have also included Edge of Sanity.

  • where the fuck is the human abstract?????

  • Symphony X is my favourite, man i love em.

  • Ayreon is underrated! It is Rock Opera with many influences - I love his music!

  • Circus Maximus lml-.-lml!!!!

  • you forgot Fates Warning :(

  • yea i personally just cannot stand death growls, they just bother me. i can put up with darker vocals and some yelling but the growling just bothers me. some good stuff on this list though.

  • Worst selection of bands ever, IMO. Pick a genre already. If you call it "26 Kickass Progressive Metal Bands" stick to that genre. Then create a separate video for "Doom Metal" and the other crap.

  • @dje2671 I laugh at you. Sorry.

  • @PainlessSoul Don't be sorry, just make a better argument for why you laugh at me.

  • @dje2671 No problem. First of all, you leave a negative comment just because you didn't think it was a great idea to put more genres in one video. In fact, most of the people who listen to metal/progressive metal, do listen to many genres. For example these I have in this video. So I can't really see why its so wrong. I just promote bands and edit videos for fun. Also, what I mostly reacted on, you actually called the music in this video crap. How can it be crap? There you go.

  • @PainlessSoul Finally, that's a good start. If you are not ready to deal with negative comments, don't post videos on Youtube. Second, I clearly stated that my comment was my opinion, that's what IMO stands for. Lastly, I have been listening to Progressive Rock and Metal since before you were born, more precisely since Fates Warning released "Awaken The Guardian" in 1986. I would like to think I have a little bit more knowledge of Progressive Metal that you do, no offense, ur still 17!

  • @dje2671 I clearly understand that.

Of course I am ready to deal with negative comments and opinions. Lots of haters out there. But I think it's a bit excessive to call this music crap. It might be bad for you, but its not crap. It's still musical masterpieces for other people. I also understand that you have more knownledge than me. Thinking of your age. I started listening to Threshold's albums on secondary school. Albums like Wounded Land (1993). I also saw a lot of great music on your profile

  • @PainlessSoul Let's put this to rest and say that the doom, black, and other non-progressive stuff belongs in another compilation. U should check out my videos, lot's of good Progressive rock and metal. Enjoy young man ;)

  • @dje2671 I sure will!

  • who the hell plays the begaining song, its wicked

  • Tool?Queensryche?Fates Warning?Cynic?Atheist?Watchtower?

  • Dream Theater. <3

  • >26 awesome prog metal bands

    >No Tool

    >The band being around since 1990

    >Still doesn't put them in

    Please reboot the list.

  • @MetaLeir93 Can you read the description before you comment like that next time? Thanks.

  • @MetaLeir93 Tool isn't metal :p

  • @TyrantofBodom What genre is Tool in your opinion?

  • @luckyluke193 I'd say Progressive Rock, which may not seem like that big of a difference to most people, but it makes a big difference to Tool themselves... especially Adam.

  • @TyrantofBodom Of course, because Tool was never alt/prog metal

  • Where's (arjen lucassen's) star one in this list!? If you don't know Star One, the best song is Digital Rain.

  • @mickey1700 I can't put everything I listen to into one video, that would be way too long. I love star one. I have everything from Arjen's projects. He is such a inspiring musician. :)

  • Ayreon is dutch, where I live :D

  • Check out our prog metal - links and vids on channel - watch for us in June 2011 Featured band in HT Magazine!

  • Doesnt anyone listens to Porcupine Tree..? :-P

  • @skatestreetboys19 I do. They're amazing. Steven is such a great musician.

  • @skatestreetboys19 Yeah!! The best!

  • @skatestreetboys19 I love porcupine tree but I don't know if I would put them on this list. it's kind of hard to say really. good band though

  • Honestly..This is real music! this is what true musicians and true music fans listen to :)

  • Thumbs down for the heart attack at the beginning, thumbs up for the awesome bands lol

  • Try Amogh Symphony for a prorgressive metal except there are other mixing of genres in this band as well such as funk, jazz, and electronic. Also the band comes from India @ PainlessSoul and to other youtubers.

  • Very good video!

  • ayreon. that's what im talking about

  • Man...no tool?

  • Opeth are so talented, it's unreal. <3

  • thats funny, i coulda sworn i didnt see TOOL or meshugga in there lol

  • You should check out Seventh Wonder, their two latest albums are absolutely amazing! :) And nice to see that Arena gets their well-deserved spot in videos like these, way underrated band in my opinion!

Thanks for making this video, I picked up a few more bands to listen to! :)

  • great video, Opeth Rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i fucking love it, but no tool? :(

  • Great list man, finally someone with good taste. I love it how you opened with Opeth :) I WILL be checking out a lot of these bands!! I have a similar vid list on my channel, feel free to check it out.

    Cheers!

  • @MrJamesScreams Nice to hear that the video helped you to find some new bands! And thanks, mate.

  • sorry for the comment i see description now : /

  • you should check out between the buried and me :)

  • Psychotic waltz did not change their name to dead soul tribe.

It's a different band, with only the same singer.

    PW>>>>>>>DST btw

  • Dream Theater ftw!

  • @Musikdose they suck donkey cunt.

  • @Pwtana4real Haha, it actually was on purpose !

    Cheers mate ;)

  • @Pwtana4real Thank you so fucking much!

Yes, I spent damn long time on this video. I was so happy when it finally was done. Cheers !!

  • Watchtower?

  • very well done compilation, there's some bands I didn't know

  • You should check in Irepress. Awesome band imo!

  • no btbam. goddam man. they're def kickass and progressive in every since of the words.

  • @seetherfeast777 Without doubt, indeed they are kickass. I fucking adore their music. As you might missed, I havent added my whole list of bands I listen to, into this video. And this list is from 2008, which means, perhaps I didn't listen to them that time.

  • keyboard music

  • i would put also angra and fates warning

  • Sphere of souls

    Psychotic Waltz

    Draconian

    Ayreon

    Must listen to those bands

  • are you brazilian?

  • Great List! I also recommend Conception and Ark to you, Torre Ostby is a great Prog Metal composer and the former band features Kamelot's Roy Khan on lead vocals

  • But where is Katatonia?

  • @Harlequinslullaby Katatonia is not prog metal, they are doom metal.

  • @Megadedly Doom metal is already exists in the intro list mate. So why are they unsuitable for this video? b*llshit.

  • @Harlequinslullaby Did I say they were unsuitable? I was just implying that the title says prog metal. If that's how it is than...video title fail.

  • Opeeeeeeeeeeeetttthhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i just give a fuck about death metal not all of that other crap

  • oi, where's Adagio? =p

  • Hell yeah!!! You choosed Dream Theater, Opeth and Symphony X which are the best progressive metal bands :D

  • You have a great musical taste. If you like progressive metal, check my channel and my band Humangod.

  • Threshold forever.... ;)

  • Very, very nice compilation of prog bands. You Rock Dude, and Thanks for the info.

  • i fuckin hate how too many people mix prog metal with fuckin shit power metal

  • Hey there! Great choice of bands here! Age of Nemesis and Mind's Eye aren't well known, unfortunately... anyway make it up to the poor Arjen Lucassen, as you pointed out, there isn't much growl in his music hehe! If you don't know them already, check out The Arkitecht and their first album "Hyperstructure" :-)

  • We are honored to be included with so many great progressive metal bands! Thanks, PainlessSoul

  • @shadowgallerymusic Hey SG. It is a great honor to hear from you. Your very welcome, it is a well-deserved place in the video / collection.

-Keep up the fantastic work !

    -PainlessSoul.

  • Try checking out Stam1na: I dare say it is progressive metal at its best!

  • Try checking out Stam1na: I dare say it is progressive metal at its best!

  • u got opeth, symphony x an dreamtheater? niice

  • Anyone know where I can pick up some Psychotic Waltz? not on itunes

  • Pretty much all good stuff...I am suprised you didn't have Zero Hour up there though.

  • @OpusArtistic Indeed !

Well, I do have a couple of their albums and they are awesome, no doubt. But I don't think I was listening to them when I made this video. This video is 2 years old though...

  • @PainlessSoul

Ah...I hear ya there...in the past two years, I alone, have discovered a plethora of new music. Any true fan of music will have a daily expanding limit...I don't think many would contest that.

I have a few suggestions for you: Vildhjarta, Animals As Leaders, Orphaned Land, To-Mera, Adagio, Chimp Spanner, Anubis Gate, Counter-World Existence, Egoist, Frost*, Kiuas, Koyaanisqatsy, Centrica, Cosmics, Newbreed, Myrath, Nova Art, SmaXone, Spheric Universe Experience, Symbyosis

  • @OpusArtistic You are not alone, but it was surprisingly an unknown list of music for me. Except Koyaanisqatsy, Orphaned Land and Adagio. These three bands are really great, no doubt. Love them ! But thanks, usually I get suggestions of bands I already know of, but this was a great suggestion list, many thanks ! Will check them out.

  • @PainlessSoul I've got plenty and always like to share. Some of the stuff can be tricky to find so just give me a shout if you need help or you want more suggestions :D

  • @OpusArtistic Anubis Gate +100000000000

  • @strangedejavu23

lol yeah, but there are better by far.

  • When does the Moonlight Comedy - Dorothy CD come out? This seems one of the very best on here.

  • @jmsbk12345 It came out 2007, Its a great album !

  • firewind is power metal

  • coming from my brutal - techno death metal kinds of music (cannibal corpse, death, obscura, children of bodom) , i like only opeth and draconian (strange songs !) D:

  • Just to add, I don't see Between The Buried and Me, just IMO :U

  • @8JobForAMexican8 Yeah, sadly I didn't listen to them when I made this video ( a long time ago ), but of course I do now. They're awesome !

  • Nice choices of bands, try out some Pain of Salvation or some Zero Hour

  • @Tortuc27 Thank you. Yeah, I listen to them both.

  • Nice choices of bands, try out some Pain of Salvation or some Zero Hour

  • @joshx555 Ok, now I've heard that too... Please go 0:24 in the video, and read.

  • spiral architect is amazing

  • hey the threshold song = ''ravages of time, not revages'' :)

  • @spaciespacer Hey ! Yeah, I know, noticed right after i published it. ^^

  • I like the way the bass sounds on the first song

  • Celestial Entrance album from Pagan's Mind is unreal, pick it up if you love progressive/power

  • @Milkman23 Pagan's Mind is a great band and their recent album God's Equation kicks so much ass! Melodic, powerful and innovative + great production.

@PainlessSoul nice video, I appreciate including Threshold, Circus Maximus and Spiral Architect - truly amazing bands

  • What about Between The Buried And Me?

  • TOOL , nuff' said.

  • @MeDiaTrUck tool by definition is definitly progressive metal, but sound so abstract from what Prog metal usually sounds like that they are something else. Like Acid Prog or something. I always get that surreal feeling when i listen to them at least

  • Gojira.

  • @SystemOfAGilles Have all albums by gojira. They are fucking awesome.

  • Adagio? Andromeda? Angra? Planet X? Liquid Tension Experiment? Hear these! Immediately!

  • @ThePetruccijunior Adagio is one of my favorite bands, Andromeda is kickass, love them both. I'm not really that into Angra. Havent heard of Liquid Tension Experiment, so I will check them out as soon as possible, thanks man !

  • Angra`s Temple of Shadows album is just perfect! Listen to songs like "Spread your fire" and "Nopain for the dead"..Older stuff ain´t so good...Vanden Plas is ok band too..

  • @ThePetruccijunior Okey thanks, I will check it out :)

Yes, vanden plas is ok. Not fan, but its ok ^^

  • Dream Theater=Best Band Band EVER

  • Check out the band "Mirrorthrone" if you haven't already as well as "Ephel Duath".

  • @UndergarmentBurglar Thanks man ! Mirrorthrone sounds awesome ! Going to check out "Ephel Duath" now. Cheers !

  • I really like progressive metal, but the majority of the singers really suck imo.

  • BTBAM??? where is the btbam??

  • @Carlito148 I listen to them, they are fucking awesome ! But, I didn't listen to them when I made this video. Its an old video (2008)... I am considering making a new video with other great bands, but still insure.

  • @PainlessSoul oh alright then awesome man =]

  • @PainlessSoul Please do, I'd love a new 1

  • @PainlessSoul You chose the perfect song for DT, I love The Mirror.

  • Dream Theater, Symphony X and Opeth FTW!!!!!!

  • How can Opeth just fucking own so easily!

  • im searching for bands similar to deadsoul tribe. cant find any tribal band like them :(. any help? ty

  • soul fly? not as heavy but still

  • you should check out between the buried and me

  • This is actually a fairly solid and interesting list.

  • could someone please tell me the name of the band and song at the first when all the bands are listed

  • Ofcourse ! :)

    Band: Deadsoul Tribe

    Album: Deadsoul Tribe (2002)

    Song: One Bullet

  • i almost shat my pants at the beginning! Don't ever fuckin' do that again.

  • draconian man draconian!!!

  • Draconian is in the video :)

They are fucking kick ass ! Seen them live (yes, I'm that lucky)

  • no btbam? :( nice list though!

  • Cynic!!!!!!

  • Right on man! There is great stuff there that i've never heard. I'm on this musical search. I'm searching for new stuff. Thanks for adding. The only two i knew was Opeth and Dream Theatre.

  • I'm glad you found some stuff then!

    Cheers!

  • no stratovarius,no

helloween no pagans mind. ok you forgot a few

  • I didn't forget them, I just didn't add them. To less space.

  • I know and love most of the bands you showed here, but I've just never found the prog side of Kamelot and Evergray. To me they are as progressive as Iron Maiden or Hammerfall.

  • @kotapito Well, kamelot isn't progressive metal, you are right about that. But Evergrey is. Atleast some of their albums. Like Recreation Day (2003) and A Night To Remember (2005), I find progressive. I havent heard each album by Evergrey, so Im not quiet sure about all of the albums. But Torn (2008) aren't progressive at all, its just boring (in my opinion). :)

  • Great compilation, man. A good variety too. \m/

  • TOOL !!!!!!

  • I meant to suggest the band, "Tool".

    Wasn't calling anyone a tool.

    :)

  • You need to check out their new song PEEL. I'ts the best. They are playing at Whisky in Hollywood. 2/04/10. I'm so there.

  • I'll check it out very soon.

    Enjoy !

  • NIce mix bro. I grew up in the 80's, but appreciate all the new stuff out there.

    REDEMPTION has some great stuff.

Ray Alder on vocals. One of the best in the biz in my opinion

  • Thanks man!

Redemption has alot of great stuff, indeed. And yes, Ray Alder have such a great voice! No doubt about that.

Currently I only have their "The fullness Of Time" 2003 album. But Im probably going to get more of their materials later. :)
