Connors knew how to work a crowd like no other. I watched him play a few matches in a satellite tournament before he became a pro. There were maybe 100 people watching, but he would try to involve the audience and made sure that his opponent never had the upper hand w/ the spectators.
Feel sorry for Agassi having to deal with that crap. The fan refers to him as a "punk", yet his manners are impeccable here whereas (contrary to what the commentator asserts) Connors is playing the showman more than is fair to his opponent.
When I was growing up I only knew Andre as a bald guy, like in his US Open final in 2005 against The Mighty Fed. I never knew until a couple years ago that he used to be fabio! Go Andre, you have an awesome spirit!
The classic moment @ 2:22 was awesome but seriously, I WISHED someone had yelled the same thing during Agassi's last match against Benjamin Becker at the 2006 US Open. A totally missed opportunity in my mind.
Connor's Only Played if he was getting PAID- total asshole,Jimmy's the punk, Agassi's passing shot's were way too much for J.C to handle... His lil serve & volley game wouldn't stand a chance Now,Maybe in the late 70's & 80's But his backhand is pretty weak...
You're right! "Connors you were a punk, you are a punk and always be one, whereas Andre you are the real LEGEND!". Agassi is a champion off the court because he gave and still gives back so much tothe community. He gives children the opportunity to education, something he didn't have. But he has a good heart and compassion for people not quite as fotunate and that says it all!!!
I think this match can be considered a seminal event where heavy topspin was shown to be a better way to take advantage of the new racquet technology, as opposed to hitting flat or with underspin. There is a good reason why in today's game, no one hits a pure flat ball like Connors in this match.
Maybe, but when Jimmy Connors played, not many hit the ball like him either. In my opinion, it doesn't matter. You can win with either way. It's up to the player, if you have it athletically, you have it. Jimmy Connors has it, and he won with his technique when not many hit the ball flat from the 1970's to the 1990's. He won and he still holds the most tournaments wins of all time. So maybe e couldn't win as much today, but maybe he could. I think he could because he has mental ability
Very true. I think people would be surprised....Connors would be at the top in any era. His clean hitting, simple technique, all-court game, and most importantly: feel for rallies, mental toughness, and quickness of feet would make him great anytime, anywhere.
@circuitdesign I disagree, Jimmy never hit the ball flat, although it seemed like he did. Connors played his best years against topspin masters like Borg and Vilas, I suppose this match shows more the advantage a young player may have against a veteran.
No, that's truly ridiculous. Ever heard of Connors vs Borg? Beating up an aging Connors who was well past his grand slam winning days is no sign that his style is not effective. In fact, it's his efficient style that was still allowing him to be a factor at such an advanced age.
There is not ONE right way to hit the ball, few hit the ball as flat as Connors in any era, but we still see greatly varying amounts of topspin. Because of the homogenization of tennis teaching, we ...
...not see that style again, but actually, a great many 2-handed players drive through the ball very flat even today, in fact, a number of the best current backhands, like a Nalbandian for example, hit very flat.
@circuitdesign That is complete nonsense. Connors was old and past it. And Agassi hits the ball extremely flat, so to say he uses 'heavy topspin' is nonsensical. Players who have the rare ability these days to flatten out the ball, coupled with consistency can gain the upper hand. The only reason why great defensive players are coming out on top these days is because of homogenized court surfaces. There was no purer, flatter ball striker than Andre Agassi.
@MaratSafinVideos different types of tennis balls can influence spin too. When the Australian open changed surfaces for instance, they also changed from slazenger balls to wilsons...the wilsons are softer just like the ones at the US Open, which means you can't hit the ball with as much spin, and they respond to flatter striking better, which naturally gives power players an advantage over counterpunchers.
@imavaughanstar It's also a matter of preference. The faster the ball, the more pace flat hitters can generate. The slazenger balls they began to use in the 2008 event caused some players to complain, like Richard Gasquet, stating that those balls suited bigger and stronger guys. But then again, they're harder to hit through, possibly favouring defensive players.
Wilson US Opens have always had a notorious reputation for not being durable and small and hard.
@circuitdesign Your comment makes no sense. People were hitting with heavy topspin before this match as well as after. As a matter of fact Agassi, actually hit harder and flatter as he got older. I agree that no one hits like Connors because he has a very unique style but don't forget that Connors made it to the semi-finals of the US Open at age 39 in 1991 which is 3 years after this match so his flat groundstrokes were still effective.
@circuitdesign Agreed, absolutely. In fact, I'd argue that while Agassi and Lendl (and Borg, though to a lesser extent) may not be the greatest of all time, their strokes are what effectively created the modern game today. I hate people who try to compare greats from different eras, but I find it difficult to believe that Jimmy Connors would have any success against even the Verdascos and Wawrinka's--their ball just jumps that much more and their fitness is that much better.
@Muzikhead993 I think that great champions can adapt for any kind of game or era, the talent, training and mind force push their limits to another level, as Agassi did last decade - despite her age.
@circuitdesign Agreed, absolutely. so cute...so sweet...so talented. Love that Andre!!! Andre was 36 when he beat Marco Bahgdatis who was 21. Andre is every bit as much a legend in tennis as Jimmy Conners ever was.
Both Andre Agassi and Jimmy Connors were incredible Tennis Players.Whoever was better, who knows? They both won 8 Grand Slams and were incredible professional players
I have a lot of respect for what Connors achieved on the tennis court, but not much for him as a person, and this is exactly why. He clearly wasn't just trying to entertain the crowd, he was trying to intimidate Agassi, indirectly saying to him "this is my stadium kid", hoping it would cause him to choke. Thankfully Agassi didn't.
Connors had more technique tan Agassi, Connors had a better backhand than Agassi, BY FAR!!!! Both had charisma, but i loved when Connors was fighting against Mcenroe or to anyone. Agassi never fight against Sampras, he never tell a word to Sampras during a match, and that is so fucking boring. Mcenroe vs Connors, that was a true rivalry. Sampras - Agassi was good but we always knew that Sampras was better. Federer - Nadal is the most gayest rivalry of all time, they are best friends, so GAY
@rockerkid26 Agassi is one of the cleanest ball strikers in the history of the game. His technique is much better than Connors, especially on the backhand side. In terms of the tennis played, the Agassi-Sampras and Nadal-Federer rivalries are both of a much higher quality than Mcenroe-Connors. If you're after fights and arguments, watch WWE. This was a match between two Players with great technique!
To hit the ball as flat as Connors did, requires a perfect timing and accuracy.
Remember: Connors reached the US-Open semi-finals in 1991 with age of 39!
Has someone over 35 reached such results?
YES - Agassi did!
So... They both had a perfect and revolutionary style of playing their shots.
With the body of a young guy Agassi would still kick everyones asses with his great technique on the ATP Tour today!
...And everyone knows this...
