PanteraMark you made a mistake. One of the Mongols if you take a good look later became Nikoli Volkoff. Bill Eadie always wore a mask or face paint, he never became a Mongol.
@quincy5757 i could easily be wrong, but as far as i know, The Mongols were the first team that Albano managed to win the belts (1970). But it was the WWWF International Titles, not the WWWF World Tag Team titles. I guess the first WWWF Tag Team belts Albano actually won was as The Sicilians, with him as a wrestler partnered with Tony Altimore. But those were the WWWF United States Tag Team belts (in 1967). International, World, U.S., it's all very confusing...
@dontchadaremissit As usual, my friend, you are correct. The Mongols were Albano's first tag champs as manager (International tag champs). He managed the first ever WWWF World tag champs (Tyler & Graham) and the third tag champs as well (Curtis & Scicluna).
@maddogwrestlingfan rene goulet and gotch defearted graham and tyler and then sicluna and king came after and lost the titles to strongbow and sonny king. and you are correct sir, because you are the maddogwrestling fan!
I remember when Monsoon was managed by Wild Red Berry and they claimed he was from Manchuria and could not speak English. What a gimmick. All titles in this match were just inventions of Vince Sr. But he had a keen eye for talent . . . And was loyal to his wreslters - Later to be fired by his own son -Vince Jr.
tarzan Tyler and Luke Graham never defeated the Mongols it was sort of a Brett Hart Screw deal even back then. The Mongols would split but not before they would head to the IWA which was a sore spot in McMahons WWWF,The IWA was getting good numbers on tv,but again McMahon blacklisted there chances to go into the bigger arenas in the area. They were the World Class in there time. The IWA had great stars like Mils Mascaras, the Mighty Igor, the Mongols,Bulldog Brower,Even Ernie Ladd showed up.
@rockytheyorky Well, in truth the IWA Mongols were Geeto from this version (Newton Hattice) and Bill Eadie as Bolo (yes, the same Bill Eadie that was the Masked Superstar and Axe from Demolition). Beppo (aka Nikolai Volkoff) went to AWA and wrestled there as Boris Brezhnikov, then came back to WWWF in 1974 and worked as Nikolai Volkoff (Volkoff's real name is Josip Peruzovic).
Two months before Pedro wins the WWWF World title. Supposedly, Gorilla was Pedro's road manager. The Mongols left the WWWF and a ficticious tournament was held in New Orleans of all places for the tag title. Luke Graham and Tarzan Tyler won the belt. Allegedly beating the Sheik and Bruiser. They later beat the Mongols in Pittsburgh to take away any doubt as to who the true title holders were.
@deuceoo You hear different stories about that. The one I heard was that Tyler & Graham beat the Mongols to win that tourney, and that it was in Vegas. Very strange, because Lou Albano managed both those teams. The Sheik and Bruiser both had their own promotions in the Midwest and could not have come to WWWF back then for anything more than a few guest shots. Still, it was a "phantom" tournament and never actually took place - rather moot points all around.
@elc1960 sounds alot like what happened in 1979 with Pat Patterson and the "tournament" he won in Rio for the original Intercontinental title. what really happened was that the NWA demanded that McMahon Sr. return the North American title that Dibiase brought with him to the WWWF , and that Patterson won, be returned to the Paul Boesh promotion (MId South). So as not to look stupid, they create the Intercon. title.
@timcrtr Exactly. They put the WWWF belt on Buddy Rogers that way back in early 1963, by claiming he'd beaten Antonino Rocca in the finals of a tournament in Rio. In reality, the NWA wanted their belt off Rogers so they had Lou Thesz beat him for it. (Supposedly, the story goes that Thesz told Rogers in the dressing room "We can do this the easy way . . . or the hard way.") McMahon and Toots Mondt wanted the belt on Rogers, so they refused to recognize Thesz and created the "tournament" story.
@elc1960 Actually I believe it was Sammartino that told Rogers that before he beat him in 48 seconds. Apparently, Rogers was not totally aware of the title change until he arived at the arena. He had been in poor health, and Bruno had been garnering a great fan following from DC to Boston and Pittsburgh to NYC. The ironic part is the WWWF title, WWWF tag title, and Intercontinental title were all won in ficticious tournaments outside of the Northeast.
@deuceoo The situation with Thesz was a few months before the match with Bruno, and was for the NWA belt. McMahon and Mondt wanted to keep the belt on Rogers, so they broke from the NWA and formed the WWWF using promoters and arenas that were part of their Capitol Wrestling promotion. Rogers allegedly had a heart attack shortly after that, and so Bruno had to have a very short match with Rogers because of it.
Thank you SO much for posting this gem! Anyone recognize Beppo Mongol? He's Josip Peruzovic, aka "Nikolai Volkoff". After WWWF took the belts off The Mongols, "Volkoff" went to work for Verne Gagne as "Boris Brezhnikov", but Geeto (Newton Hattice) traveled South and found a new partner in "Bolo Mongol" (aka Bill Eadie, who was later "The Masked Superstar" and "Axe" from "Demolition").
I hope that Geto Mongol (Newton Tattrie) gets in the WWE Hall of Fame in the future. Bepo would really become famous as Nicolai Volkoff.

@mrtherock60 yes, Bill Eadie was once a mongol, "Bolo" Mongol. But not in (W)WWF.

Didn't Geto Mongol become the Masked Superstar and then Ax of Demolition?

@PanteraMark I'm pretty sure that Geto Mongol trained Masked Superstar aka Ax aka Bill Eadie, and Eadie wrestled as a different Mongol, "Bolo".
