Talent in singing is not a trait monopolized just by one group of people, you know. i think what people can't get over is the fact that arnel does the old hits with a steve perry sound and feel. however, steve, in my opinion, can never be replaced or topped. what it boils down to and money. journey has finally found a new lead singer that can make the old hits sound good and as close to steve perry as possible.
for hard core SP fans he is irreplaceable...but reality bites, Journey moved on w/ SA,JSS and soared higher w/ AP....now the world knows how superbly versatile Arnel is now and then...AP is now the tough feat to follow esp on live acts...he is a benchmark and an inspiration to many!!!
He's a good singer but to comment on your message directly-- yes, the sound guy turned the effects up too high....less is more. But, hey, good for Journey their new album should sound great.
No doubt Arnel is very good. The best singer since Steve. Listen to the best of Steve Live and the best of Arnel live and there's an extra oomph to Steve. Arnel comes across as maybe a much more disciplined singer than Steve and so he might be more consistent than Steve at times, but a less than consistent and less than disciplined Steve Perry outshines Arnel's best attempts to emulate the Steve Perry's sound.
@TheJerryChannel I seriously am looking forward to hearing the song, as I like Arnel very much. A big reason people like me are so devoted to Perry, however, is he didn't just write one or two of the hits, once he came on board he is credited as a co-writer on all but a handful of hits on all the albums+he had his own hit solo albums showing versatility. Add the producing credits & co-writing hits with others like Kenny Loggins, David Pack, & you've got the whole package.

As a Journey fan (not as big a fan as most out there but a great admirer of Journeys music) I know there has been a big Schism in the fans about WHO is better Steve perry , Steve Augieri, or Arnel Pineda.I totally agree that SP is the originator, the one who gave journey its voice and cannot be replaced. But since SP will not be coming back to Journey, isnt it good to know that there are at least *2* other singers who can keep the Journey sound going and are really good at it too? (cont)

Arnel pineda is way better than Steve Perry & Steve Augeri..its not because im a Pilipino..Im not a professional in music. But with my own sense i can say that Arnel Pineda is the best performer among the past vocalist of Journey.

Their new songs are really great, but I didn't think it was necessary to re-record the Perry hits. I've always thought those songs were Steve's, and only his. :( Journey should've just saved them for the live performances
I think he has a great voice and is a perfect replacement for Steve Perry: similar vocal styles, but with enough variation to make the songs his own. And the emotional depth he puts in his performance is better than any replacement singer I've seen (Ronny James Dio replacing Ozzy in Black Sabbath, for example).

@GOBbluthagain go back to the Captured and Escape live albums with Perry. The man was unmatched live-and without the technology today that gives the singer's voice a rest. Remember, back in the 70's and 80's Perry was touring over 100 dates a year, with relatively primitive touring conditions in the earlier years. He did it year after year, at a higher register than they are doing the song's for Arnel, longer sets, without Deen singing the lead on some songs.
If Neal had stopped believing, they wouldn't find Arnel and would just be like other bands who faded in time. A toast to you Neal, Jon, Ross and the rest of the guys who believed that Journey will return and will be welcomed by this generation with Open Arms :D

I have been a long time fan of Journey and did not even realize it. Hip hop and R&B mainly. But I realized that I know the words to nearly all of their hits. I like this guy because he has that whiskey tenor voice and such power in such a small package. Let these people hate because Journey's records are Platinum with him at the helm. More power journey from a recently realized fan.
I'm not sure I need a re-recorded version of old Journey songs. Steve Perry's vocals are seared into my memory and that is how I will always remember the classic Journey songs, but I am really looking forward to Journey banging out new songs and touring so I can hear the old songs done well with new stuff in the mix.

I just saw them last night for the second time, since High School over 26 years ago. I couldn't believe my ears...i thought no way, he's kinda sounding better than Steve Perry.

Saw live in concert in early August 2009. Arnel did a FANTASTIC job. I think he's done a lot of work on his English because his annunciation is a lot better than in the "early" vids. To front a band like Journey, and do it in your non-native language... wow.

Arnel pineda is way better than Steve Perry & Steve Augeri..its not because im a Pilipino..Im not a professional in music. But with my own sense i can say that Arnel Pineda is the best performer among the past vocalist of Journey.

Their new songs are really great, but I didn't think it was necessary to re-record the Perry hits. I've always thought those songs were Steve's, and only his. :( Journey should've just saved them for the live performances

I think he has a great voice and is a perfect replacement for Steve Perry: similar vocal styles, but with enough variation to make the songs his own. And the emotional depth he puts in his performance is better than any replacement singer I've seen (Ronny James Dio replacing Ozzy in Black Sabbath, for example).

@GOBbluthagain go back to the Captured and Escape live albums with Perry. The man was unmatched live-and without the technology today that gives the singer's voice a rest. Remember, back in the 70's and 80's Perry was touring over 100 dates a year, with relatively primitive touring conditions in the earlier years. He did it year after year, at a higher register than they are doing the song's for Arnel, longer sets, without Deen singing the lead on some songs.

Perry was Journey but give this guy some credit he is very talented. Look up his Zoo band and watch him do heart and Bryan Adams he is incredible. Would be a great solo act for Vegas in the mold of Danny Ganz,. Would make Millions.

i am not dissing the guy in any way at all. he is a good singer but he needs to leave steve perry's great hits alone. make his own songs with journey. all in all he is a great singer and i will always like journey. just miss the old days with perry and group. i believe once they get all the bugs worked out things will be great with them. just leave all the old hits alone.

I saw Journey perform on "Ellen DeGenerous" and "Oprah" recently, and I have to say, it made me sad. To think that the group honestly thinks it can be as big as it was without Perry is pathetic. It's like, trying to replace Robert Plant with PeeWee Herman. It just doesn't work. They're just trying to capitalize on the past. They ought to call it a day.

I like Journey, and I also like Steve Perry. He had a unique voice. However, sometimes life surprises people. It is unfortunate that Steve Perry is no longer with Journey. I wish Steve Perry the best, and a warm welcome to Arnel Pineda. God bless all of you.

I have been a long time fan of Journey and did not even realize it. Hip hop and R&B mainly. But I realized that I know the words to nearly all of their hits. I like this guy because he has that whiskey tenor voice and such power in such a small package. Let these people hate because Journey's records are Platinum with him at the helm. I'm not sure I need a re-recorded version of old Journey songs. Steve Perry's vocals are seared into my memory and that is how I will always remember the classic Journey songs, but I am really looking forward to Journey banging out new songs and touring so I can hear the old songs done well with new stuff in the mix.

Even with Perry there would be no "hits" because IT'S 80'S MUSIC.Journey is having a nice revival thanks to Pineda.He sings great,is fun onstage and the band is jacked to have him.
BTW - They have recorded new material with Pineda.They're releasing a new album.But it is what it is - a revival of a great 80's band and in a couple of years it will be over for good.
After all,these guys are now 60 years old.

I just saw them last night for the second time, since High School over 26 years ago. I couldn't believe my ears...i thought no way, he's kinda sounding better than Steve Perry.
Although, this concert was so different than i the first time i saw Journey, no lighters during Faithfully, just cell phone lights...no black spandex or parachute pants and no big hair...it was like my 25th HS reunion...and no doobies being passed around!

Saw live in concert in early August 2009. Arnel did a FANTASTIC job. I think he's done a lot of work on his English because his annunciation is a lot better than in the "early" vids. To front a band like Journey, and do it in your non-native language... wow.
