I personally think it's insulting to have to be called a hyphenated American. I am white, but if I were black I would be insulted at being called an african american. It's like it makes you less of an american. If you were born here, you are 100% american and have the right to be recognized as such.

What many people seem to forget, America is a huge continent. People from the United States always seem to be referred to as Americans; whereas people from Canada, Mexico and many other countries in the Americas (North and South) are also Americans. Africa is a continent, so by hyphenating African-American; this would be the same as calling yourself a European-American (if you were from Germany). I was not born in the states, however, I live here now. (I am a proud United States "American" !)
