It's rare that such an established star produce a solo album as good and well received outside the realm of his band. No other solo album attained the noteriety of Empty Glass. It was a monumental work that received enourmous reviews as well as great acceptance from the public.

I remember when it came out. It was an album that defined the year that was 1980. Ask anyone.

Why I prefer to use Empty Glass as the example is because it was an album that signaled the end of the '60s-'70s "supergroup."

Music was turning warmer and more personal (in my opinion) and Empty Glass was so autobiographical and indicative of its time that Townshend chose not make it a Who album.

London Calling (Rolling Stone's "Album of the '80s") had a lot of anger. And - for good or bad - anger (not cynisism) was waning in '80s pop culture.

It's not. It's actually the other way around. If you read the lyrics, it's in 1st person mode, God is speaking to you. This is suppose to be a spiritual song but it came off more like a pop song about love in general, which can be interpreted as that way.
