  • how badly do i want to see townshend smash that guitar at the end

  • man i'm only 32 but i hunger for those days when i was a little kid and mom and dad would listen to the radio and songs like this were etched in my heart and mind,,,, every time i hear a song like this,, it takes me back and makes feel gooey,,,, i dont know how to explain it, but if there were a time machine i would go back to then!!

  • I agree! I've always had a crush on Pete Townshend and always will.

  • i can't find this version of song, why? =(

  • If you mean the live version, i can't tell you. If you simply mean the song, it's on 1980's Empty Glass, Pete's solo album.

  • can anyone tell me when this song came out??????

  • 1980, Empty Glass, solo album

  • wow i love this song

  • why the hell would it remind you of pete townshend i wonder?

  • ENORME !!!!! point barre !

  • was this petes song???

  • yes, of course

  • i dont kno why i didnt kno that???? lol i love pete

  • NO lol

  • Pete does close to no covers, especially back when he was doing his solo career. He has done a few of course, how could he not?

  • @YJMproductions Pete has either written or co-written all of his songs, and almost all of The Who's songs. He's very talented, he plays several instruments, including banjo, violin, etc. My musical idol.

  • I remember that I waited the credits of Mr. Deeds to see who perform this track lol

  • When Empty Glass first came out, many people, at first, wondered why it wasnt a Who album. Upon listening to it even a few times, one can realize that this was not possible.

Though Townshend and Daltrey were (and will always be) very close, the subject matter of the songs on this album were much to personal for anyone else to sing.

Empty Glass could only be a solo album.

  • Nonce.

  • Empty Glass was the album that bridged the '70s and '80s.

    A fine an controversial work.

  • you can tell this boy brings forth the 60s sound even if this was 2020

  • Makimum R&B

  • You legend!

  • Never be another one like him

  • Mr. Deeds!!!

  • He one of the last Rock and Roll Legends. They'll never be another like him.

  • This Guy is like the greatest of all times!!!I wish i was in that concert. He's a pure Legend.

  • There's still Brian May and Jimmy Page kicking around.

  • This song is AMAZINGGGGG

  • We all love the Pete. What a bloke!

I have this video (yes, video) Im not too sure he was on his game for this particular performance, a few mistakes but brilliant nonetheless.

  • yes...that is what i needed this morning

  • this song is so awesome!

  • Heard this song at the end of Along Came Polly so searched for it, couldnt believe it was Pete Townshend, always thought he was a bit of a rocker! Great up-beat song.

  • My favourite song :)

  • This song makes me happy every time I hear it!

  • Its disturbing how many times a day i can listen to this song w/o getting tired of it, he's really brilliant!

  • you know... you're right.. it does.

  • thanks for sharing, i like it, have you put any other songs together

  • Pete fucking ROCKS.

  • Truly one of the all time greatest, IMHO.

  • great rendition of a kick @ss song!

    thanks for posting.

  • what a great voice he has

  • i dont care what insults i get from this. pete townshend is the best songwriter to ever live.

  • Why would you get insults from that. He and Wayne Coyne are two of the greatest songwriters to live!!!!

  • Probably up until recently one of the most under rated musician/artists of all time.

  • Nobody ever underated Pete. He has been considered a genius since Tommy. Thank God for The Who the Beatles the Stones Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd

  • AGREED.

  • AHH I totally agree. AMAZING bands and Tommy made everything so much better too.

  • yeah you rock

  • its been way too long since this has been commented!

    pete you rock!

  • its me again lets comment this video people!

  • I love the comments of fans of the amazing, beautiful, indomitable Pete Townshend. Ty friends.

  • is that Simon Phillips on drums!?

  • Yes.

  • Oh My God, What excellence!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i didnt know pete sang this song... i think hes good without the who so if they ever split up he'd make a fine profit solo... i luv u pete!!! (my lil windmill man)

  • I love Pete Townshend. With all my heart and soul. I don't even care if he's 49 years older then me~~<3

    I LOVE YOU PETE!!! WAHH~~

  • He's 49 years older than me, too! I love Pete Townshend!!!!!

  • i'll agree with the solo career

pete is my idol and pretty much the reason i picked up a guitar so thank you pete

  • One of the greatest songs ever - next to save it for later

  • Look at Simon Phillips on drums, the beats dont match. the audio is lagging behind the video. Townshend does not lip-synch. Hey frodnipper, F- for observance.(Get a clue)

  • god, this man is amazing. pete's solo career is my favorite solo career out of everyone in the who. ROCK ON PETE!

  • haha i think the video is delayed so it looks like he's lip synchin

    dunno maybe

  • One thing about Pete Townsend is that when he plays in front of an audience, it's always live and not sync'ed.

  • omg oi dont u reckon he does???

  • i love this song!! its in the movie, Dan in Real Life... awesome!!!

  • Also in Mr. Deeds. Just saw it and had to look for this video!

  • looks lyk the national treasure dude

  • AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING! Wow....

  • Townshend's gonna live on forever and prove to all the modern day shit that MUSIC MUST CHANGE!

  • modern music is not shit... you just need to listen to the right stuff. i agree that all the mainstream music is total absolute shit but bands like The Mars Volta, Wolfmother, Islands deserve to be more exposed.

  • wolfmother lmfao, what a bunch of dumb phoneys. the old guys invented 90% of what people are tryin to immitate now but the new guys forget one very important piece of the puzzle, "MELODY" there's none anymore.

  • also the raconters are all right but the classics destroy everything( van halen. the who. zeppelin. rush. )

  • OH He's Old but still good, AWESOME Song

  • This song is awsome

  • Still in love with Pete Townshend.......

  • How much more can you say after you say 'absofuckinglutelybeautiful'??? Check out the acoustic version of LMLOTD on the CD's from Petes La Jolla Ca, shows.

    Thanks for this treat!!

  • i love him on the acoustic, priceless

  • That guy with the nose got me through my teens. Thanks Pete.

  • It's rare that such an established star produce a solo album as good and well received outside the realm of his band. No other solo album attained the noteriety of Empty Glass. It was a monumental work that received enourmous reviews as well as great acceptance from the public.

I remember when it came out. It was an album that defined the year that was 1980. Ask anyone.

  • Well, not to denigrate Pete or Empty Glass (because I love both), but on my side of town The Clash's London Calling pretty much defined 1980

  • Interesting choice and point taken.

Why I prefer to use Empty Glass as the example is because it was an album that signaled the end of the '60s-'70s "supergroup."

Music was turning warmer and more personal (in my opinion) and Empty Glass was so autobiographical and indicative of its time that Townshend chose not make it a Who album.

London Calling (Rolling Stone's "Album of the '80s") had a lot of anger. And - for good or bad - anger (not cynisism) was waning in '80s pop culture.

  • nice song^^

  • WHO ARE YOU?

  • Thanks for the upload

  • He of greatness! Not only as a guitar player but as a singer and song writer!

  • agreed

  • Fantastic

  • this would be great for me to play to my girl on the acoustic you know wat im saying!!!! :P

  • Pete is a musicial genious. I aspire to be half as good as him on guitar. How does he think of all his music. He led the Who to greatnss.

  • He played at Woodstock how awesome is that!

  • one of the greatest gutarists of all time

  • Amazing!

  • Truly amazing liveversion.

  • Oh, so sweet :) i start a new capter with my new speciall boyfriend and this is our song no. 1 :)

  • And to think he wrote this song during the time he wanted to kill himself. Pure redemption of music.

  • your right, in the hell of addiction, this song is a love letter to petes jesus.

  • It's not. It's actually the other way around. If you read the lyrics, it's in 1st person mode, God is speaking to you. This is suppose to be a spiritual song but it came off more like a pop song about love in general, which can be interpreted as that way.

  • such a sweet song not so sad or anything just nice words fits perfectly with dan in real life the songs makes the movie :)

  • Yeah totally agree, that was such a great movie too :)

  • Beautiful.

    Just... amazing.

  • Great song. You should also listen to M. Ward's cover of this too -- very beautiful -- more acoustic and mellow.

  • One of the greatest human beings on the planet.

  • couldn't agree more.

  • that scene totally made me cry from Dan in Real Life. it was so sweet

  • I just saw the movie again and I had to find an actual live version of this song.

  • ok everyone who likes this song needs to see the movie "dan in real life". there is a seen in the movie were steve carrel plays the guitar and dane cook sings to it. its classic and it will make u really appreciate how good the song really is.

  • Could not agree with you more, that was absolutely amazing, and one of the few scenes I liked from the movie

  • I loooooove this song. It's so lovely, romantic, true and kind :)

  • this song is SO classic!!! one of my favs!!

  • there are few things in this world that make me smile, and this is one of them. thanks for posting it

  • great and well done song

  • This is a great song. This song is also on the trailer for Dan in Real Life.

  • Ok, few things here. 1: This song shouldn't make anyone cry cause it isin't that sad. 2: The Who aren't disbanded...If you've noticed, Entiwstle and Moon died when The Who were united. Love this song!
