Wow. What a rare gem! I won't ask where you get this, but this is a treat to all of us game show fans. And I really love those lights around the boards.. too bad it wasn't used for the CBS version
It's amazing the length of time between pilot and finally getting on the air. I wonder what finally sold the show? Was CBS just desperate or was there something that was tweaked that finally gave it the green light?
@banjochris You are correct! The nighttime edition of "The Price is Right" was indeed the first game show ever telecast in color when it aired and was co-produced by NBC (the daytime run was always in black and white). Unfortunately, ABC was still a fledgling network with a tight budget, so in spite of it's brilliant red, blue, white and gold set, it reverted to black and white, and the Ritz Theater (now Walter Kerr) reverted back to a legitimate Broadway theater after TPIR's cancellation.
I did not know that there was an earlier version of TJW from 1969. Was it a network show or syndicated?

Allen Ludden probably would have done alright with hosting this show had Password not returned to television at the time it did.

Is it me, or does the theme music sound like a typical synthesizer from the early 80s...in the late 60s??
darijoe 2 years ago
it's called a moog synthesizer, yes! and it was produced by perrey and kingsley

By 1972, CBS was drooping in ratins from all the Soaps, so CBS might have been a little desperate and bought it to air.
secondchance1977 2 years ago
The fact that the rest of their daytime sched was nothing but sitcom reruns also factored in.

I'm guessing that's what led to all those early '70s hits that came around the same year?
Hondo20132 1 year ago
Very interesting early color footage of a game show form the 60's.

@TimelordR I think the Let's Make A Deal Pilot though (1963) takes the cake in terms of earliest color game show.
pannoni1 11 months ago
@pannoni1 I think the Cullen Price is Right may have been the first color game show -- there were quite a few color ones on NBC back in the '50s.
banjochris 8 months ago
@banjochris Actually, it was NBC's Truth or Consequences.

@Austin7298 Cool -- was that the Barker version or earlier?

Yeah.
Hondo20132 2 years ago
Yep...note how they're careful to avoid shooting the right side of the stage here (where the celeb seating area was for the 1st pilot).
