i am just grateful to had the great pleasure to see rory performing for several times. not only one of the most talented, for sure he was the most sympathic, too.
god bless you rory gallagher............................
I only discovered Rory recently, but ever since I heard shadowplay I've been absorbing his wonderful music and literature about him. Also my mothers roots are in Cork, where he lived for much of his life. Next year I plan to visit the city and while I'm there I intend to visit his grave lay some flowers and simply to tell him "thankyou".
Shitcreek, you talk the biggest amount of pish I've heard yet, you heard Rory and decided, 'fuck it, I'll never be that good so I won't bother', my fucking arse. If you had a brain you'd realise that you took that decision because in the first place you didn't have the 'smarts' to try.
A distinctive and unique headstone for distinctive and unique guitarist and bluesman irrespective of what anyone else on here says about it. Rory's death only proves there's no god otherwise the man would still be walking the earth. Anyone who listened to or saw Rory perform and was not instantly compelled to learn guitar should consider themselves lacking as a human being somewhat.
@daviegarden Ha ha ha.I wasn't compelled to learn the guitar, I got rid of them as I thought then in 1972, I'd never be able to play that good, nor would anyone else, so folks, smash up your guitars cos the very reason it was invented has died and now plays for the Angels!
He was by far the greatest guitar player ever, he should have won that award ever year,i listen to him ever day, what a blessing he was, i'll never get enough of him, i wish i knew more about him, i mean he put's the guitar pick in his mouth, so he can shake a fan's hand, how many do you know that would do that, i can tell you NONE, so RORY R I P you'll alway's be the best i ever heard and i'am 70 so i heard a lot.
Very cool video & a great choice of song as well. As far as his gravestone being "tacky".......that's a bit harsh I think. Who says all headstones have to look alike anyway? When you get to the cemetery.......you certainly know where to find it! It's the one that doesn't look like all the others. May Rory rest in peace.
Thanks Rory for all the pleasure you have given me through the years with live concerts (6 with Taste...7 with RGB), vinyl albums, cassette tapes,CD'S,video tapes and DVD'S. Rory is the best...RIP son. ox
Rory was and is forever for all of us, for all our souls and one day when we leave life, we will be with him jamming to - who knows - tattood lady maybe.
I visited Rory's grave in 2002. I'm glad I did; it was my way of paying final respects to one of teh greats. His music and his personality live on and his fans seem to increase every day
I live very near this grave and , believe me, it does not look tacky in reality. It is a beautiful shade of gold befitting the legend that Rory is. In the sunlight it is stunning. Rest in Peace Rory.
I don't know why I'm saying this but, thanks for posting this. It just seems so strange after watching his unbelievable energy to see this quiet place. Well, he finally got back to Ireland, for eternity, Someday soon I hope to get there and see it for myself.
WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOU RORY.ALTHOUGH YOU LL ALWAYS BE ALIVE.LOTS OF LOVE AND RESPECT FROM GREECE.YOU TOUGHT ME WHAT ROCK IS ALL ABOUT.......R.I.P. HOPE TO SEE YOU AGAIN SOMEDAY
Some friends of mine went to see the grave and when they told the taxi driver at the station where they were going he didn't charge them, stayed around so my mates could have their photo taken together and waited for half an hour before taking them back. All for free because it was for Rory.
He was one of a kind and definately one of the best. It was because of him I learned to play a little bit of bottleneck guitar. In my own way I play a tribute to him when I try.
@tommy80jm yea, and got the poster. In was in Dunedin in new zealand in 1980. Rory also did an interview on TV before the concert, wonder where that is now.
The concert was Incredible, and bloody loud. From memory, he played "Out on the Western Plain", "Keychain", "Follow me", "Calling Card". He even played mandolin at one stage. Pretty sure he never played "A Million Miles Away".
This Is sad to see but Im happy, I'm about to tavel there and visit Rory Gallagher and Philip Lynott gaves, The 2 best Rockers Ireland had and 2 Most Underated once.
Rory ! un trés grand Artiste , quel tristesse que tu sois parti si tôt , je t'ai vu deux fois à Lille en 1978 , deux concerts gravés dans mon coeur , repose en paix ................
I went to Ireland last year and I went to the North via Dublin but I went over the border via Derry. I have an Irish surname (Purcell) although as far as I can make out it came from before 1866! still when I got off the ferry and I turned to Linda my missus and said "I'm coming home!" I wonder if that's got anything to do with it but I am no way a plastic!!. I intend to go there in 2011 all being well. Tacky maybe but it won't put me off going.
I can't believe that comments have had to be made in defence of the design of the stone.
Rory's passing was and is still so deep-felt by so many people, what does it matter? That design has been chosen by someone who loves and respects him and how can that be anything bad? Whether you think it looks good, or looks bad, it's a massive mark of respect.
Went to Ireland for the first time last summer. Of course I also went to see his grave!
To pay my respect to the master I left my favourite guitar pick that I had used for almost 2 years. I used it at my music examination in High School and for a entrance examination at a Music School. It was pretty worn down by almost 2 years of use.
If I go to Ireland again there's no doubt that I'll visit this place again! Long Live Rory!
I visited him a few years ago I remember I intentionally went down to see him apart from my girlfriend meetin up with a few friends. I only knew the name of the graveyard and was too shy to ask around were was Rory Gallagher buried. Anyway I found it and had a quite moment to myself with the G-Man and later had a lovely chat with a music shop owner, not the one Rory bought the strat from but another about music and Rory, also I'd just missed a small exhibit about Rory in the local library that wk!
what is the name of the song? and if anyone from Cork is reading this where is St Olivers cemetary I,ve been living 2 minutes walk from Model Farm Road for two years now and I never knew there was a cemetary there not to mention that Rory Gallagher was buried there.
brookersglen, if you pass Eden Hall heading outbound on the Model Farm Road, there is a turn to the left about 1/2 mile to 1 mile on. Head down that road and you'll arrive at the cemetary on the right.
Well i have to say i am not that impressed with the choice of Rory's headstone. dare i say it looks a bit tacky. no disrespect intended, just my opinion.
Well I see no point in your comment then, if the headstone is a replica of the award, then you are suggesting it is tacky, but this is not the place to discuss negative things about Rory, I repeat :::
The important thing here is the fact that many people still visit the grave and enjoy his music
@tyhplas It is a reproduction of his 1972 (I think) Melody Maker magazine award for International Guitarist of the Year. He beat out even Eric Clapton for that!! I think it most fitting that his family reproduced it for his gravestone!!
I don't like cemetaries and gravestones seem so final - but Rory's grave marker looks like a setting sun - which his passing ubdoubtedly was - but perhaps it is rising for though the sun has set on the life of a genius, it rises again every time his priceless musical legacy is played, talked about, rediscovered or discovered for the first time by the young. Rory's talent lives on.
Imagine being buried next to him, the neighboring graves are a great deal newer than his and it must have been an honour knowing you were going to be put to rest next to The Greatest Guitarist Of All Time.
Thanks for posting. I was there last year and it was a great moment for me. Wonderful video because I remember the feeling I had had when I see this clip.
I was there in 2006, I'm 5'11, 51yrs old and wept like a baby when I phoned my Bro and told him where I was, he choked up too so take some tissues bud, it's a harder place to leave than it is to find but well worth the "visit" cos you'll hear him playin!!

Your opinion and fair enough, but, as stated before, it is a replica of an award he won, so it
is maybe a tacky award ? No don't think so !
