When I was a little girl in Ohio, I heard Franco Corelli on the radio at the Met the week of his debut, and he sounded glorious! This was in the early 1950's. My friends were actually there and said he was the best tenor they had ever heard, and I loved him very much.
Exquisite; to be able to sing this with such raw abandon and passion and yet still remain so technically focused absolutely blows my mind. Grazie, Maestro Corelli!
@MastersoftheOpera i love both voices and prefer both in different roles DEL MONACO and Corelli were both exciting and great artists but i think that one was a little better than the other depending on the role they sung.Nether one would ever dissapoint
Thank you very much for this video of the great Corelli, once again the traditional italian way of singing both with the immense talent of this tenor !

So young and he already did pianissimo and sang those secure high sounds! Also, a rare opportunity to see his huge acting talent (they don't show him in "E lucevan" in Gallone's film, they show a lamp!)
Yes,Miss Minnie...FRanchissimo was blessed by God with all the gifts:talent, musicality, beauty, magnificence,an easy way to reach,in singing, all that he wanted....
And this early video whows to us the true roots of his arts:the spontaneous feeling burning in each note,in each pasage,in each breathning...
He was instinctively able to project the emotion of the character and, with a good director, gave the most nuanced performances dramatically of his roles I have seen. The direction for the 1956 Tosca, unfortunately not nearly as helpful to the performers and, of course, only Corelli, of the major cast, was both singing his part and acting it. All the others were voices of singers with others acting the roles because of "looks".
Yes. His brother looked handsome and very aristocratic! Or so it seems of the little one gets to see of him. Thanks for telling me about Hardy Classics.
This director did an excellent job showing his face, without other effects that would have distracted the viewer. I've already watched it several times. It is hard for an actor to suggest he is in death row with his eyes, but for an opera singer... it's unique, impossible.
And how he grabs those prison bars desperately, but still with elegant gestures, his fingers move so stylishly. Every detail is done with finesse. Only four years into his career! You have to see and hear this to believe!
I agree with you. When I saw his face, before he even opened his mouth to sing, I was so moved by his facial expression (there was a kind of immense, inexplicable sadness in his eyes). Not to even mention how marvellous it was when he actually started singing! So passionate, tender, moving and romantic with his rich, dark timbre and mezze voci! And when someone says he was a bad actor! Here you can see on his face without mistake all Cavaradossi's despair and sadness!
I've read an article where the author makes that stupid and unreasonable statement. Of course I don't agree with that. As to Visconti and Vestale, Maria too, as I have read, learned a lot about acting from Visconti, although I think even before that she had a natural gift for acting. Like someone wrote in an article, the Greek tragedy flew through her veins. Both Maria and Franco were wonderful actors, so convincing. :)
I have read many recollections by people who saw many of his performances at the Met and they described him as a very good actor who would immediately transform into the figure he was playing. He avoided the bad operatic, theatrical gestures. As Grace Bumbry said: "I wish you could have seen Corelli just once on the stage. When they say class, that was class. When they say voice, that was a voice."
Ottimo Cavaradossi qui Corelli nel 1955 alla RAI. Bravissimo intramontabile voce tanto stimata da me e ringraziamenti vivi, laonirica per la bella sorpresa!
I know only CANTO SOCIETY BCS 0660 1995 (VHS);Those are moments which are, like a golden arrow in my heart. Where I feel my tears are burned not in vain; since Francone no longer is among us. Terrific! A pearl-oh no, "the pearl set in gold", thank you.

I think Tosca one of most beautiful Puccini's opera, mainly this aria, E lucevan le stelle.
We can see the emotion in the Franco Corelli's interpretation. Over there his technique. He's a great tenor.
