It's hard to believe that Andreas Katsulas, Richard Biggs and Jeff Conaway are all dead now. They left such a legacy of marvelous performances...and all the clips from the show on YouTube remind me of it. Thank you, gentlemen, wherever you are.
It is amazing that by the time the 5th year came around, only 7 of the original castmembers remained which isn't too bad considering how some shows lose most of their original castmembers.
I wish that Susan Ivanova would returned for a few episodes in season 5 other than the finale that was filmed for season 4 since there was no explanation for her departure.
@moviemania147 In a brief side-note on ISN at the very end of the second-to-last episode of season 4, the anchor told us that Ivonova arranged to be captain of one of the earth cruisers instead of staying on Babylon 5. Her reason being that she "had to find out where her heart was before the rest of her could follow." In other words she left to do some soul searching after the ___ of Marcus.
There has been nothing in American sci-fi like Babylon 5. For whatever flaws it possessed, it had scope, grandeur, high tragedy, philosophy, and hope. Everyone involved treated it as a mission as much as a job, and we saw that on the screen. In spite of miserly support and no budget, these people put a pre-planned, pre-written book on television, and no other American tv show has done that.
I would love if some try to reboot the series. Don't get me wrong, I love the original series but some people cant get past dated SFX. Plus if they get a good deal, maybe they could tell their great story the way it should have been told.
@DashTalon You have a point, but I just don't think the show would be the same without all those actors, and sadly, Andreas Katsulas, Richard Biggs and Jeff Conaway have already died (May they rest in peace). You just couldn't do it without them.
And so it was uploaded, There is a hole in your channel, what do you watch, no-one here gives likes where they are necessary, the video quality isn't the same anymore.
@TheJboy88 I feel the same way. If only JMS had had assurances for the show he could have stretched season 4 back into two seasons and kept 5 as awesome as the rest.
I feel exactly the same way, season 5 was lacking, it was ok in its own right but not great but had the best opening credits. Definitely would of been better if the show was allowed to finish as it was intended.
I grew up in the 90's and remember all the conspiracy theories floating around about Bill Clinton and martial law etc. Every time I hear President Clark I think Clinton. Other than that, there needs to be a Telepath War movie or miniseries. R.I.P Jeff Conway.
There should an episode that takes place after the end of season 5 with the same actors and make it so it takes place years after the end of season 5. It could end with them going to the first ones
For me, Lochley was like Sheridan at first, hated her, but finally warmed back up. Can't say the same for Byron, I hate poets and he was as poetic as some rouge telepath could get. Celebrations for firing a PPG at explosive fuel.
@Usul573 Actually apparently Byron was originally meant to hook up with Ivanova, but after Claudia left, they paired him with Lyta. Not sure if that would've looked better and not sure how Marcus would've fit into things (whether he'd still be alive or not)
I was just wondering even if Claudia Christian would have returned in guest starring capacity in season 5, I wonder what episodes that the character could have appeared in.
Day of the Dead seemed to me to be the biggest missed opportunity. I expect when it was drafted (before the claudia christian contract issues) that it was going to be about Ivanova would getting closure and resolution with the back-for-a-day Marcus Cole. Instead, Lochley's exposition-sister shows up with exposition instead.
@monstermayhem32 A view from the gallery because Earth force sent a Warlock led battlegroup to relieve Babylon 5 during the attack but arrived late as the ISA White Star fleet was closer..
@monstermayhem32 A TV adaptation from the short tale "Hidden Agendas", that could be linked to the "A view from the gallery" episode.
Claudia Christian wrote a book about the Ivanova's path once she left Babylon 5. It was called "Baptism of Fire". Sadly it was a very limited edition printing.
I like this opening as well. At least Susan returned in the finale that was filmed for season 4, but a better explanation should have been given for her departure.
It was indeed sad this fine show had to end, but that was how JMS first envisioned it. He'd planned a five year story arc, and what a fantastic five years they were.
On the bright side, the Babylon project was a complete success.
"Now get the hell out our galaxy!" :D I wonder what Season 5 would have been had JMS known for sure there was going to be a S5, the civil war from the end of S4 perhaps?
@fergmaster One of the unfilmed episode titles from season 5 might give you an idea. It was called "The Very Long Night Of Susan Ivanova". There is one website that I know of where a summary of the origianl outline of the show is posted, however I can't remeber the web address.
Weakest season? Okay, the first episodes were weak, but those were the introductionary episodes for newcomers. But I'd like to remind the criticizers about the bombardment of Centauri Prime. That was the single most dramatic point in the whole damn series. Sheridan arriving too late was more dramatic than everything else that happened to him before. I mean this was a moment that I didn't expect from the series. Not even after the eradication of a whole established race.
I love Star Wars, Star Trek and Babylon 5 like children, what I mean is I love them all the same but in different ways. Star Wars was fantasy, another time and another place. Star Trek, the ideal future. Babylon 5, a realistic future in that the human condition is still the main element. I like the escape of Star Wars, the hope of Star Trek and the Raw grit of Babylon 5.
Babylon 5, Season 5, was, while not the best season, one of the best. Toward the last five episodes you knew that the show was coming to an end when you saw the main characters starting to leave. You could feel it. The last episode of the series nearly brought tears to my eyes. It was a beautiful episode.
There has been no better ending to a series than that one. The last episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine came close.
Forget Star Trek, bacause it can't hold up with Babylon 5.
Babylon 5 is the only series with an ending. At all other films you got the feeling "the future is still out, next episode might be comming". At least Babylon 5 came to an end, so it is possible to get a life for the one, that don't have a life outside of Babylon 5.
EVERYTING has to come to an end some day. Accept that, say yes, enjoy it and you can really enjoy your life.
@DarkShinji250 Garibaldi leaving (believe it was in the ep before the finale?) was the one scene that really affected me. I couldn't believe it. Absolutely loved his character. He was the heart and soul of the show.. The glue that held it all together. When he left, i knew it really was over. The final episode, for some reason, doesn't get to me nearly as much..
Sensational music - Franke really outdid himself. I think season 5 would equal, if not, top season 4 had JMS not had to reorganise the story cos of uncertainty as to getting a 5th season right til the last minute (thanx to the big stinky cheeses). Season 4 was meant to end with John J's capture. And his rescue and the end of the Earth civil war wasn't supposed to happen til season 5. When u consider this I find it kinda hard to critique season 5. I just love the whole darn thing! ;o) Nice post!
