I actually had no problem at all with Seles' grunts when they caused such a stir because they were such a natural expression of energy, adding to the intensity of her game. Venus' screams idem, they're great actually, Serena fine too.

but to the extremes that azarenka or sharapova take it is just plain ridiculous and really should be punished.

it is unfair to force your opponent into a noisy atmosphere he is not used to, but you are. not only that, it also ruins the game for spectators.

The only way this bullshit is gonna change is for just ONE player to ask for a hindrance on each and every point, and walk to the umpire to ask for the point. If several do it, AND the Umpire enforces the rules, OR even if they don't the fact that it is protested by the opposing player, it will start to diminish. They get away with it, so of course nothing changes. If you are the opposing player, and don't say anything, then you condone it.

Any tennis player who does not scream on every single shot in practice but does in matches should receive warnings and have points taken away. ...... In the Azarenka case, given that her shrieks last until her opponent's return, it's in the close vicinity of cheating. Where is the border line,... if all the players decide to scream on every shot, i quess there would be much less spectators to endure the sport.... It's my opinion, what's yours?

@rbuss1956 grunting is a part of tennis. there are players that produce noise when hitting and there are some that don't. in fact, grunting can be used to one's advantage; it helps you release energy, hit harder, and distract your opponent all at the same time. it's true that azarenka doesn't need to grunt on every point she has but after all, she is number 5 in the world. you can't say much to that.
