I love the unique qualities in both the "old" sound and the "new" sound from OLP. This new material here, and also heavyweight, sound something new altogether; and I mean that in a good way.
I like this, and I really didn't think I would. It sure isn't something that sounds like a song from their albums in the 90's, but I really like it for what it is. I'm happy it doesn't sound like Burn Burn either.
burn burn was fantastic album, and I'll never understand why people say it sucked. I think people these days are programmed to say "This band's new album sucked, it was nothing like the old stuff" It wasn't as good as Naveed or Happiness, but it wwas fuckin sick.
@danieldrums9 fucking agree! I don't want some band that keeps to the same fucking sound and formula. And good bands sometimes have to take the poppy route to do that. But OLP still does it well
I want to hear how it's changed, because this has such a good vibe to it...And I disagree with the Burn Burn haters...That was an excellent album...Not everything needs to sound like 1997.
@BEEZERWAX34 Precisely. They criticize you for growing and changing, even though they're doing so honestly, but they'd be damn quick to accuse you of being stale and tired if you went the AC/DC route and stuck rigidly to one sound and formula. You can't win with people, and I really feel a lot of people just miss their past more than they miss a band sounding a very specific way.
burn burn was actually a pretty damn good album. i know its a different style than something from the naveed era, but those days are long gone. What matters is the quality and uniqueness that OLP can bring to the table. judging from a lot of the demos and leaked material ive heard so far, this new album is going to be a new sound all together, so i, for one, am going to keep an open mind and am looking forward to the new release.
That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. "Edgy, youthful music." Yeah, who would ever want to make music like that. There's no target market for youth in music. Or a unique sound, for that matter.
@Beansner yeah, I'm in full agreement with you. But the guys have been at it for 20 years, and it seems that more mainstream, mature and mellow music is something they prefer doing now; it's a path they want to take at this stage of their career. I respect them enough to support them in whatever direction they take their music. If I had it my way, 2011 would see "Clumsy: Part 2", but we can't hold on to the past if they want to take their music in another direction.
@Slacktoo It's their music, it's their choice. I respect OLP and the other artists I enjoy and love, but that doesn't make it a hit. "Mainstream" is the path of least musical resistance and just doesn't take as much effort to be original. I just wish they would've kept moving the stream in their own direction instead of going with the flow.
@pugggs FYI, the song has changed since this recording, and Raine has recorded new vocals. He's still in the stage of just recording vocals to give a template, he hasn't recorded the final vocals yet.
The newer vocals I've heard (unfortunately I wasn't able to record) sound much better and more emotionally invested than these. Don't be so quick to judge, the album isn't out yet and the songs are far from finished.
Ugh. I don't expect them to make the exact same songs that made me love them ahead of most all bands, but there's no more edge. This is processed commercial junk. Raine sounds terrible. This is NOT it.
@Beansner in a recent interview the band said their older music was "for boys" or for kids, and that they are now making music "for men". I don't think you can expect them to go back to that edgy youthful music any more.
@LeaderMan I factored that in, Leaderman. I know it's also only one song, too. To me, it just feels like the songs lack the energy and raw emotion on previous offerings. I want something that makes me get that shiver down my spine like "Everyone's a Junkie", "Stealing Babies", "Julia", the list goes on. I feel that they changed their sound on each record and then it just got poppy and cookie cutter during HiPT. Raine's reckless abandon falsetto has been discarded for the most part.
@Slacktoo Listen to the momentum of the song. To me, it has that same feel and overall tone. I can picture Tom Yorke being pushed around a trolly. Sure, its not the same song nor the same melody, but its the same feel. The vocals in small nuances are close to FPT as well.
I love the unique qualities in both the "old" sound and the "new" sound from OLP. This new material here, and also heavyweight, sound something new altogether; and I mean that in a good way.

To the guy who said the vocals were whiney. Raine's voice has always had that attribute, but I would use a different word for it.

@Beansner FYI the song has changed dramatically since this recording. If they play it again in their live stream I'll record and upload.

@Slacktoo This might be the rough version, but it doesn't sound minimally mainstream.

I love OLP and I don't mean this in a negative way, but it sounds so much like "fake plastic trees" by Radiohead
