No, seriously. He killed Gillian, Hendel and Nick, and, hopefully, his career as a writer.
For this book this guy should really have his hands cut off, so he can never write a piece of trash like this. I mean really, why does he kill off 3 characters Drew Karpyshyn created and let Kai Leng defect in a vase and eat Andersons cereal? (for he is an adrenalin junkie, obviously). What a douchebag.
@Jaws1009 did you read this book? if so, you'd know it wouldn't be too hard to write something better. Even though english is a second language for me.
To think I was actually considering to buy this book. Well, I might still buy it but only as example of sheer absurdity. Not to mention, isn´t everything good from "Ascension" (only ME book I´ve ever read) put to naught?
@capacamaru How was the writing in the ME3 demo "horrible?" We only got a glimpse of the story overall. You judge an entire game's story after a 20 minute teaser?
@DraconicDev No, I judged the potential for the games story from what I saw in the demo, the same way you would for graphics, or gameplay. That's what a demo is for.
Examples:
Krogan battle drop
Wrex "Its too dangerous to land!" Shepherd "I got this"
Haven't bought this book yet. I'll buy it regardless of how terrible it is, to catch the rest of the story. Was worried when I heard Drew didn't write it though. Seems my expectations were correct.
@Antichrist2000 They pretty much have to for it to actually be error free.
Also, why not just get your $8 back instead of setting the thing on fire? To be honest, it sends a stronger message. Do you think BioWare and Del Rey actually care if you burn their book after you've paid for it?
@evilemperordude Spectacle is always louder. Just think how many people have seen this now and are not going to buy the book. I think they care about that.(by they I mean Bioware...I don't think Del Ray cares about anything)
Just read about 50 pages of this book. I dunno, there are a few things that don't sound like ME at some times, but I just fill in the gaps I guess. Yes, it's not perfect, but it's pretty entertaining.
@instantdeath99 On the Citadel there is a place called "The Cube" were biotics basically fight each other kinda like a Dragon Ball Tournament or a Mortal Kombat tournament only without the mortality. It's just a few pages about it. Also Gillian is pretty powerful yeah!
@instantdeath99 So far, Udina is the defacto council member and Anderson is an Admiral on his way to retiring. I for one chose Anderson to be the councilor in my game, but I'm no t really bothered. I just assume in my mind that Anderson gave up his title to Udina after the events of ME2 when Retribution started.
This makes me happy. I mean, simply complaining about errors in a videogame spinoff novel wouldn't have been enough, would it? It's entirely reasonable and altogether understandable to get genuinely angry about it. It makes sense that someone would get dressed up in a Mass Effect-themed Klan garb and film themselves burning a copy of a book because it's inconsistent with the established facts of an entirely fictional universe. Good to see people showing perspective.
If someone wrote a shitty book for Halo ppl wouldnt give a shit, but with ME we expect more, ME is one of the best, and well written sci-fi franchises of all time.
@Ex0dus111 ....I'm both a Halo and Mass Effect fan boy and I can clearly say that Dietz has ruined Halo before. He wrote "The Flood" basically a retelling of Halo: Combat Evolved, which was completely unnecessary and horribly written. Halo fans will get up in arms just as bad as Mass Effect fans. Take for example: Halo Reach. That game retconned many aspects and fans were complaining and still are. Anything with a loyal fanbase will complain about something that is bad in terms of the lore.
@NWNisFUN Overated is when somthing is rated very high by critics but alot of people think the actual thing sucks. In other words CoD. Nearly everyone loves Mass Effect my freind
@Themastercode1235 Last time I checked the fanboys blindly pre-ordered MW3 too. Despite numerous bugs, glitches, and exploits during the early and later life of MW2 people still pre-ordered MW3 and it made record sales yet again. What you state is simply opinion and you can't do anything about it.
See, when I first heard about this, I thought "oh, well that's ridiculous, there's no way it can be as bad as anyone says!" And then I read the list of errors. And it's like if a Star Wars book came out that described Yoda as being 6ft tall and made the Death Star out to be a Borg cube. It almost seems like it would have had to been written that terribly on purpose. It's THAT bad. The fucking book deserves to be burnt. They don't need to re-edit it, they just need to start from scratch.
You know, I'm not surprised by how shitty this book was, considering that Deitz FUCKING WROTE HALO: THE FLOOD, which was by far, one of the WORST books I've ever read.
I didn't know Mass Effect turned into some kind of religion. Just refund the damn thing. They would've gotten the same picture if the book wasn't selling....and it encourages recycling.
@Nikoli420 Yeah because you can't have your own opinions on video games, movies, and books...Oh no...that's not allowed in the world of "Internwebz"...
They built the book to be fireproof for a reason... and did you try a cooking/blow torch? worked on my copy... hydrochloric acid is also a good choice for you scientist types.
So glad this got fixed! I've read all the books to date and the fact that bioware would pay an "official" writer to churn out some crap that demonstrates less lore knowledge than even what a casual fan can tell you is absurd. Such a slap in the face to any fan of the franchise.
you probably shouldn't had burned that book man, Bioware has just released a public apology for the shitty quality of the book and promised a revised edition that will at least fix the many mistakes made by the original.
This means, in 30 years or so, the original crappy book could be worth quite a lot as a collector's item. Kinda like the E.T The extraterrestrial game that caused the videogame crash on the 80's
I just finished reading "The forever war" by Joe Haldeman(a great novel and definetely a recommendation) today and then read the sample of Mass Effect Deception, my first thought was "has anyone at Bioware read this, and if so why was this published?" I have seen William C. Dietz name on several other video game adaptation novels and I intend to avoid them as he has shown very little attention to many aspects of the Mass Effect universe. What a waste of potential.
VICTORY!!!!!!!! Bioware has officially issued an apology regarding that HORRIBLE piece of shit, and are in fact going to revise the book for future editions and at the very least fix the glaring errors in lore.
Personally, I think they should just do what George Lucas did with the Star Wars holyday special and declare it non-canon. Seems easier than trying to fix that book, as it would require a complete rewrite to even make it worth re-reading.
I have asked why the book is bad. Well now i have my answer, but in this kind of situation i always ask this:"Who the hell made it", and even better question:" Who the hell approved it"!
but anyways, I'll just buy it (only 10 euros so meh) and I'll read it, luckily im not easy dissapointed, I love almost all content created for a subject I love.
though last airbender movie was horrible I hope the book is not that bad.
I'll see for myself, only 5 more days and I'll be able to order one.
@MrJoekick4ss You are in for a great deal of disappointment then. It's pretty accurate to say Deception is to Mass Effect what The Last Airbender was to the Avatar series.
@MrJoekick4ss Karpyshyn moved onto the Star Wars: The Old Republic project and was unable to write Deception because of it, so BioWare went to a freelancer instead.
To burn a book, you don't try to use it to fuel the fire. It's too dense. You make a fire, then throw the book in it and keep the fire going until the book is gone.
@rackieackie It takes quite a bit of disgust and hate, preferrably when the book itself is insulting and rather offensive, and that's not even talking about the lore inaccuracies.
@thorearnthur Yeah, t'was my first and hopefully my last. It really is common sense to open it up more so the oxygen can spread but then it was midnight and I was pretty damn tired.
Just bought this book yesterday and was fairly disappointed. Should really have looked at a review before doing so just read on the escapist today how bad it is ><
Well to be fair, Dietz is an awful writer to begin with. I've only read his book, "The Flood," and I left pissed off. It was horrible, even compared to the mediocre writing that is the Halo Novels. Granted, they are good filler material, not grade A depictions of literature.
Dietz just needs to stop writing, he works comes off as a badly done fan fiction.
@thespartanmk1 I have heard it's quite the controversial read. If that's anything to go by, I'm still trying to fathom why BioWare, a company with a reputation for solid story telling, approached him of all people.
@Khran1505 It's not that it's controversial, it's that its's bad. Even when the story is laid out for him, as clear as day, which The Flood was, he still fails to deliver anything good at all. It's pathetic, and it made me feel bad for even reading it.
@kirbymaster5 I find it very ironic that someone should criticize spelling when they screwed up themselves. Would it kill people to look over their comment before posting it?
damn...... I was gonna pick up a copy of this book this weekend, thank you for letting me know how awful it is, I've just seen the famous google-document detailing just how many glaring blatant mistakes the writer made with this piece of crap.
Well, at least they did 1 thing right with the book: its name is VERY fitting.
Deception indeed. After waiting for over 6 months to get my hands on it, the result ended up as very anti-climatic.
@sziss5 The earlier novels were actually OK. Deception is like it's written by a 13-year old. Okay, Karpyshyn is no Alastair Reynolds or Philip K. Dick but his prose was at least tolerable and his plotting was OK. Compared to Dietz, that is.
Besides, I like to think the book's (lack of) quality brings people together, so I think everyone cares just the right amount
Well... you already bought the book, didn't you? Strictly speaking, why would EA/BW/whoever care what you do with it? If you have achieved anything it's to force someone to buy a new copy rather than 2nd hand, thus directly increasing book sales :D
@alexmbrennan Maybe some weirdos will want to buy the book just to see for themselves what it's like, but then I could easily direct them to the exert copy that's online which people can read for free to see just what I'm talking about. And if I had a penny for every person who cancelled their orders and pre-orders after learning just how bad it is, I'd be pretty rich.
@cuttinggale63 I could hardly compare ME2 to Deception in terms of terrible writing, lore inconsistencies and lack of character development. If one doesn't like ME2, that's their opinion, but it can't be held accountable for the many mistakes Deception makes.
@Larrylarp I was under the impression he took over Drew's position when it came to Mass Effect. (Since Erika did an interview with him last year and it very much gave that impression.)
I think they should have just let Drew write it in his own time instead of handing it over to a hack who clearly can't write.
I am really disliking the trend of Bioware hiring people who can't write for shit. I know Game Development students who could write better. =/
I find it sad that I was actually looking forward to buying this book at some point only to find out it's not worth buying. I feel like William has undone all of Drew's hard work. You could tell Drew had done his research when it came to Autism and knew the universe inside out. But it would seem all of it was now pointless, as yet another shitty writer has ruined what was a great series. Bioware seriously need to fire the shit writers and hire ones who can write and have passion for the games.
Dietz really killed it with this book!
No, seriously. He killed Gillian, Hendel and Nick, and, hopefully, his career as a writer.

Well to be fair, Dietz is an awful writer to begin with. I've only read his book, "The Flood," and I left pissed off. It was horrible, even compared to the mediocre writing that is the Halo Novels. Granted, they are good filler material, not grade A depictions of literature.
Dietz just needs to stop writing, he works comes off as a badly done fan fiction.
thespartanmk1 1 month ago
@thespartanmk1 I have heard it's quite the controversial read. If that's anything to go by, I'm still trying to fathom why BioWare, a company with a reputation for solid story telling, approached him of all people.
Khran1505 1 month ago
@Khran1505 It's not that it's controversial, it's that its's bad. Even when the story is laid out for him, as clear as day, which The Flood was, he still fails to deliver anything good at all. It's pathetic, and it made me feel bad for even reading it.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
"I make this video as an appeal to Bioware, to make them understand just what happens when they release something to poorly written..."
Why don't you burn ME2 while you're at it?
kirbymaster5 1 month ago
@kirbymaster5 Because I and a large majority of ME fans happen to like that game.

@kirbymaster5 I find it very ironic that someone should criticize spelling when they screwed up themselves. Would it kill people to look over their comment before posting it?
Oh, and also BURN MOTHERF***ER BURN

It's a shame to see a book burn but it's even more of a shame to see how someone could publish this crap.
SteffeStolpskott 1 month ago
Yeah, not a fan of burning books. I see your point, though.
No one else has to burn books.

That's why I never bought a novel that is related to gaming. 99.9% of them suck badly.
meghterb 1 month ago
@meghterb i've only read the first book and its great.
Book 2 is under way and as far as i've read it was also good.
so the first book belongs in the 00,1 %

@areyouwatchingluke Because a) I'm self-conscious, b) I'm very shy and c) It's a Mass Effect hoodie I wanted to wear for the occasion.

The title of the novel is self explanatory now that I think about it. I thought that I would enjoy this novel, but this is all a big DECEPTION.
LightStreak567 1 month ago 5
dude when you burn books there isnt enough oxygen between pages to burn properly
you have to fold a bunch of pages near the middle so that there is mroe oxygen if you want it to burn properly
doomking94 1 month ago 10
@doomking94 Yeah, you can tell it was my first (and hopefully last) time I've burnt a book.
Khran1505 1 month ago 13
@doomking94 Mmmm first time I burnt a book it took me a couple of tries to realise this and then I was a master of airflow design :D

I've read all the prior novels... And I'll read this one too and I'm hoping I don't have the same horrible experience, but I'm afraid I just might.

Throw it into a fireplace, bonfire, or some other similar large fire.
BTW, this video is getting posted to the Mass Effect Wiki and the ME Wiki Facebook page. It deserves to be seen by as many people as possible.

upon release of the mass effect novel many fans have experienced a MASSIVE OUTBREAK OF BUTTHURT.

God damn...you guys care TOO MUCH. These video-game novels are simply cash-grabs, nothing that should be taken seriously.
sziss5 1 month ago
@sziss5 - How are they any lesser novels than 'normal' novels fella?
djakademik101 1 month ago
@sziss5 The earlier novels were actually OK. Deception is like it's written by a 13-year old. Okay, Karpyshyn is no Alastair Reynolds or Philip K. Dick but his prose was at least tolerable and his plotting was OK. Compared to Dietz, that is.
Besides, I like to think the book's (lack of) quality brings people together, so I think everyone cares just the right amount
Larrylarp 1 month ago
Everyone should know that the Mass Effect universe is great and should be the "Star Wars" of our time so blame the author not the series.

I am *SO* glad that when I went to B&N to pick up a copy, they didn't have any.
soren7550 1 month ago 3
Well... you already bought the book, didn't you? Strictly speaking, why would EA/BW/whoever care what you do with it? If you have achieved anything it's to force someone to buy a new copy rather than 2nd hand, thus directly increasing book sales :D
alexmbrennan 1 month ago
@alexmbrennan Maybe some weirdos will want to buy the book just to see for themselves what it's like, but then I could easily direct them to the exert copy that's online which people can read for free to see just what I'm talking about. And if I had a penny for every person who cancelled their orders and pre-orders after learning just how bad it is, I'd be pretty rich.
Khran1505 1 month ago
@alexmbrennan It's not about money, it's about sending a message.

Best read Revelation Space and Redemption Ark by Alastair Reynolds.
They're better than all 3 Karpyshyn novels taken together.

@cuttinggale63 Yep, loved it.
Khran1505 1 month ago
@Khran1505 just saying, your annotation at 0:55 seems a tad questionable. (keep in mind i haven't read any of the books, and probably never will)
cuttinggale63 1 month ago
@cuttinggale63 I'm not sure what this has to do with Mass Effect 2. Care to elaborate on why it's questionable?
Khran1505 1 month ago 2
@Khran1505 many of the grievances you give deception are applicable to me2 as well
cuttinggale63 1 month ago
@cuttinggale63 I could hardly compare ME2 to Deception in terms of terrible writing, lore inconsistencies and lack of character development. If one doesn't like ME2, that's their opinion, but it can't be held accountable for the many mistakes Deception makes.

Lamentus 1 month ago
@Larrylarp I was under the impression he took over Drew's position when it came to Mass Effect. (Since Erika did an interview with him last year and it very much gave that impression.)
I think they should have just let Drew write it in his own time instead of handing it over to a hack who clearly can't write.
I am really disliking the trend of Bioware hiring people who can't write for shit. I know Game Development students who could write better. =/
ShinigamiDawn 1 month ago
I find it sad that I was actually looking forward to buying this book at some point only to find out it's not worth buying. I feel like William has undone all of Drew's hard work. You could tell Drew had done his research when it came to Autism and knew the universe inside out. But it would seem all of it was now pointless, as yet another shitty writer has ruined what was a great series. Bioware seriously need to fire the shit writers and hire ones who can write and have passion for the games.
