  • Good modular effects but distortion are not good!!!

  • Very Nice !

  • Johnson, Morse, Lukather, what a great selection and playing, thank you again for the amazing demo!

  • @drkam6 Thanks!

  • Damn

  • You should have played sweet child on the Ibanez Les Paul! The Line 6 was way too "thin" there

  • 0:36 yeeeeeeeeeeee

  • Hei!

    Kjempe bra spilt!

Vet du hvor jeg kan finne tabs til "Party in Simon's Pants"?

  • @222opopop Takk! Det finnes ihvertfall en versjon på ultimate-guitar

  • Damn! F**Kin awesome!

  • he play with no expression.. its umbelivable

  • To be honest I don't have that much interest in the Axe-Fx, it's out of my budget. But I've watched all parts just to see what your gonna play next. Not sure that the Axe-Fx is the star here ;-)

  • @Panthur Thanks ;-)

  • I know the AXE sounds great, but it takes a real player to make the most out of any piece of gear- you definately live up to the hype...brilliant...

  • Phenomenal. The only thing better than the great tones from the Axe Fx is your excellent playing.

  • @GeorgeFKirk ;-) Thanks a lot!

  • the preset for juice wouldve been perfect for surfing with the alien

  • love your petrucci playing :)

  • Wow....amazing demo. And...amazing playing. You covered so many great styles and hit the tones on the money for each. Great work! Super playing skills....blew me away!

  • @vhalen101 Thanks, I appreciate that!

  • Thanks for all the in-video explanations. They are gold!

  • So amazing! I was looking for an Axe demo and now i'm waiting for a new video from you! So versatile and mastering every styles... Impressive!

    Happy new year :)

  • @Hellohehehe Thanks, and Happy New Year to you too!

  • WHO ARE YOU??!!

I think it's time Guitar Player magazine did another "Worlds best unknown guitarist" article.

You did a seriously excellent job of demonstrating the panorama of rock guitar and how perfectly the Axe-fx captures those sounds.

I would also like to point out to viewers that this unit also does some insane spacey sounds. So, you get practically any sound you've ever heard and can also create a whole universe of unheard ones. An amazing player and an amazing device.

  • @rockman627 Hehe. Thanks! I'm just a regular guy from Norway who's been playing and teaching guitar for a long time.. I'm glad you liked this! By the way, my new solo album will be available at cdbaby any day now, it includes 9 of my own compositions, plus a new version of Toccata and Fugue, and my "youtube hit" Canon Rock with a Twist.

    Ketil

  • Im blown away. you just made another sale!! You better be gettting paid!! fantastic work!!

  • @balzak2008 Hehe.. Thanks!

  • finally a slash's song!!!!

  • Dude, you were the perfect person to demonstrate this Axe-Fx unit! Fractal Audio should be sending you a big check. I've become an instant fan just from watching your demos! Excellent job!

  • @Passion4Blue Thanks!

  • This series of videos you´ve done are and incredibly acurate rock guitar history demonstration. Quite remarkable in my opinion.

  • @LucasGonzalezTube Thanks, I appreciate that!

  • This series is possibly the best demonstrations I've seen of the axe fx. Not only that you are a great player too!

  • @PaulXT Thank you very much!

  • where u get ur backing tracks from?

  • @wrona003 Various sources, but I've used the sites guitarbt and guitarbackingtrack a lot, and I also made a few of them myself.

  • this guy is impressive

  • totally blown away this guy is the best ive ever seen on u tube im inspired thanks!!!!!!

  • @MICKEYISLOWD Thanks!

  • I am an instant fan. Can you do Pat Metheny and Allan holdsworth?

  • @vandgrus Thanks! I've played some Metheny stuff, but I haven't dared to do Holdsworth..

  • tez będziesz niedługo taki łysy Joe :P

  • i love your Fractal !!

  • These tones and you're playing are fantastic. I hope someday to be able to play 1/16 as well as you. I'm 42 though so, I'll need another 40 years. Are you running these backing tracks through your DAW? Or is this all in Fractal Axe? Where are you getting your backing tracks. Are you building them up? Also, are you using studio monitors, some sort of FRFR SR approach like the wedge, or poweramp/cab combo? - or all 3?

  • @littlebigfis Thanks! I think you'll find some of your answers in the full video description. The backing tracks are mostly found on the internet, but I made the Steve Morse backing track myself. All BT's were edited in Cubase. I only used headphones when recording this, but I also have two Atomic Reactor FR tube powered cabinets specially designed for amping the Axe-Fx live.

  • What do you as a MIDI controller for your AxeFX?

  • @LegoBen I'm still waiting for the Fractal Audio special foot controller (it's not ready yet..), so for now I'm not using a midi controller at all, I'm only using a Roland on/off footswitch and a EV-5 expression pedal hooked up to the pedal/footswitch inputs.

  • @rednebb Yeah, That Fractal MIDI controller looks pretty good, But it's kinda big.

I'm thinking about getting an AxeFX Ultra and getting a Liquid Foot Jr controller so it will be more portable.

  • @LegoBen Ok, the Liquid should also work fine, I guess.

  • @rednebb Cool, Thanks for replying, You're an amazing player btw

  • This guys is amazing

  • Was desperately hoping for you to play some John Frusciante, but unfortunately no such luck.

What you did do though, was some brilliant, (seemingly) effortless guitar playing. Excellent work mate.

  • @Gre4t Sorry I didn't include JF, but I'm glad you liked it anyway :-)

  • @rednebb steve vai was perfect specially sisters

  • staggering ! this is a superb video (all four of them are)

you should get this done professionally as an anthology to rock and roll

    I'd buy it!

  • @jerry1544 Thank you very much! But then I'd probably get into some trouble with copyright issues and stuff, I guess, and besides, the originals are already available, and they're better..;-)

  • Wow, Incredible skills. I am going to buy the Axe FX based on this video but I get the feeling you could play through a toaster and make it sound awesome. Thanks.

  • @lordpeekaboo Thanks! Well, I haven't tried playing through a toaster yet, but actually I like playing through cheap stuff also, trying to make it sound good.. :-) But the Axe-Fx sounds great right away, and it feels like it helps you playing better!

  • Your playing is great, you great amazing tone from the axe fx

    being broke and unemployed sux

  • Hi

Absolutely amazing stuff (all 4 videos... got my attention with Django at the beginning). Just wondering if you require a preamp/poweramp for the axe-fx, or is it stand alone? Also did you record all your backing tracks? Cheers

  • @extant09 Thank you! The Axe-Fx works as a preamp, so you can just DI it direct to a mixer/PA system for studio or live use and listen through headphones or through the PA/monitoring system. Or you could get your own personal amplification system, like the Atomic Reactor FR or similar.

  • @extant09 I found most of my backing tracks on the internet, but I did quite a bit of editing of course.. I also made a few myself.

  • Comment removed

  • cool. a bit too clean

  • Your Skill playing guitar amazes me... No matter what style, you seem to manage it all easily... amazing...

  • @TimTumTom777 Thanks!

  • @rednebb Cant stop watching your videos everything's impressive the Gary Moore, Steve Lukather.. Nice playing bro nice...

  • aaaah i have been watching your videos for quiet some time now and have been really enjoying it, but you, subconsciously, always reminded me of someone and now I finally rembember; this guy from the dutch Sesamestreet, awesome!

  • Great playing, can you plug the axe fx straight into a speaker cab without using a power amp, for low volume bedroom playing ?

  • @bluenose1875 No, the Axe-Fx has no built-in power amp, so you can't plug straight into a speaker cab without an amp inbetween. But you could plug it straight into your stereo or your powered pc speakers, for instance (you might need some special cables or converter plugs for this, though), or plug it into a mixer and use headphones like I'm doing here.

  • I just wanted to congratulate you on the perfect job you did recording this videos. The tone, the feeling and the execution was perfect to every song. EXCELENT JOB..! What are the drawbacks (not-sound related) you found on it?

  • Hi Ketil,Just brill as always.Auesome.Liz in Lanzarote.xx

  • @poshbird600 Thank you!

  • How would you compare axe fx to a boss gt 10 or gt pro, Oh ps great chops

  • How would you compare axe fx to a boss gt 10 or gt pro

  • @pleaseu2nite

There is NO comparison-you are listening to youtube rmember. The Axefx ultra is lightyears ahead of the GT 10 or pro.

Yes I own both a GT 10 and the axe fx ultra. The Gt 10 is my backup for now, collcting dust in the closet. And I cannot believe someone gave this video a thumbs down .Obviously whever did is not a serious guitar player. Because this guy is amazing. and if you doon't think so then you should switch to drums. I have been playing guitar for 30 years BTW

  • Awesome!

  • Hi, please tell me at least one drawback of this unit (but it's price) or I'll have to start selling whatever I have to buy one of these, seriously!

Also, my biggest congratulations to you man, you're the most versatile player I've seen, and you play everything soulfully.

    Keep Rocking!

  • Haha, thanks.. Well, if I try hard, I could find a couple of small drawbacks (not sound-related), but of all the amps, effects and processors I've owned before, this must be the closest to perfect of all of them. But nothing is 100% perfect you know, that's why we who have G.A.S. always want to buy new stuff all the time.. But I seriously feel that the Axe-Fx has cured my desire for new pedals, processors or amps for many years to come. But I'm still gonna buy more guitars, though.. ;-)

  • @rednebb

jajaja we need now the Axe Guitar that could the all guitar in One.. lol

  • @mxr2000 Yeah, well we (and I ) already have the Line6 Variax, which works fine in many cases, but it's more fun to have many different guitars..

  • hey. i'm interested in buying one of these in a few months. how does i compare to a real amp? do they model closely the the amps they say they replicate?

there's nowhere to try this.. so i would be making a blind purchase, and i don't want it to be a bad purchase.

  • Well, of course I haven't had the chance to compare it to all the 60+ amps that it's simulating, but I think you could make it sound very close to the original of any amp, if that's what you want. I've owned and tried a lot of different amps and processors before, and many of them were very good, but this machine really takes the prize. For live use, the "guitar amp-like" feeling depends on what you plug it into, personally I find that my Atomic Reactor FR's is a very good match.

  • I was thinking about buying this unit too but i would like to use a mesa Boogie Power amp what you think about it the boogie would make it sound good?

  • In my experience it sounds best into some kind of FR (full range flat response) system; like the specially designed Atomic Reactor FR or good quality active monitors, using the Axe-Fx's pwr amp and cab sims, but you could of course also use it with a guitar power amp and guitar cabinets, turning the sims off.

  • hi.just wanted to know if i can hook this up to a marshall jvm combo throught he line effects.would it sound any good or do i have to with something else.have you tried it through a tube amp?

  • Yes, of course you can hook it up to your combo's fx loop. But are you thinking to use it only as an effects processor or do you also want to use the amp (+cab/pwr amp) sims? If you want to use only the effects, it should work fine, but if you use amp sims throuhg the fx loop, I'm not sure the results would be that good.. Yes, I've tried it through a regular guitar tube amp, but only plugged straight into the clean channel, not through the fx loop.

  • Dude, I bought one a few months ago, all I had were these videos to go by, My Gosh, this unit is mind blowing!, I LOVE IT!

  • Cool, congrats!

  • love your b-bender tele :D

  • Great guitar player,great sound,keep them comming

  • Wow you have some serious talent i wish you were my guitar mentor haha

  • Man you have serious talent i wish you were my guitar mentor lol

  • Amazing achievement. I started watching this series looking for Axe-Fx clips, but by the end I was more blown away by you're playing - easily the most versatile guitarist I've heard. It's not just that you play all these different styles, but you even capture the feel, tone, and attitude of the original recordings. Nice job.

So are you mostly using the Axe-Fx now? Now that the gear honeymoon's over, is it still something you intend to use?

  • Thanks! I have used the Axe-Fx on a few gigs and will definitely be using it more in the future, but maybe not for everything. On gigs where I don't need a lot of different sounds and effects, it would be more convenient to just bring one of my other small amps and maybe a few effects pedals. I have a lot of gear, and I like using different gear for different situations.

  • I must say your not a bad player at all man. Impressed with the tones your getting from the Ultra. How would you think it would match up with a valve amp like a Hughes & Kettner Trilogy?

  • Thanks! I wouldn't know exactly, haven't tried the Trilogy, but my experience so far is that the Ultra can create almost any guitar tone you can think of..

  • Our lead guitarist just got his Ultra.

I'll post more, after I hear it.

    (I'm the Bass-man.)

  • Yes, I guess you can plug in a synthesizer or any other electric instrument using 1/4" jack, although it's designed specifically for electric guitar, of course.

  • Processor sounds great... but NO processor in the world can make anyone PLAY like THAT!!!

AWESOME, man!!! You just blew my old jaded ass away!!!

  • Thanks!

  • Thans for the comprehensive answer! I will go for the ultra and a new pair of monitors. The only bad side effect of watching your video is that now I know how many guitars I'll be buying...so I will also need buy a bigger house. Thanks again and greetings from the Netherlands.

  • Hehe.. Sorry, and thanks! ;-)

  • Great playing and great tones!! How does this sound when used with a tube amp? I have a pod xt for recording and for use with my amp and I'm really disapointed with it. For serious recording, do you advise the ultra over the regular one? I play a Gibson SG '61 reissue and a Bogner Alchemist 112. Thanks for any advice!

  • Thanks! You could use it with a regular tube amp, but for live use it works best just going straight into the house mixer/PA, and then using your preferred personal monitoring. Some kind of FR (full range/flat response) system is recommended, like the Atomic Reactor FR (which actually is a FR tube amp) or a(pair of) good active monitors. Or you could just use in-ear monitoring.

  • Great playing. Have you had a chance to compare the Axe Fx to the Eleven Rack?? if so which one does the real deal the best??

  • No, I haven't tried the Eleven Rack.

  • For studio work you don't need any amp at all, just go straight into your mixer, soundcard or whatever, and you're ready to go! I haven't tried the Axe-Fx Standard, but I guess it sounds just as good, but the Ultra has more effects and processor power.

  • Like Boss GT10, but more expensive

  • I could listen to this guy all day!

  • Beautiful!

  • vgg! tnx! =))

Btw tnx for the Glasgow Kiss, Mr. Petrucci! =)

oh and DT before that wasnt all that good, and the choice of a song is even worse. =D

Should've chosen PMU, everybody knows that, from their earlier and better days, for example. =P

  • Great!!! Your quite a show!

  • know any Steely Dan pieces?

  • Yes..

  • Hello man, i see you have lots of guitars and even tough you are using a VARIAX instead of a real Les paul. I think you are a guy who can tell teh benefits of this guitar and how is it compare with the real things? Does it worth the money? Wich are the differences with the real counterparts? Is it the AXE-FX of guitars??

  • I haven't actually tried all the different models that the Variax is modeling, and I guess it doesn't quite nail them all equally good, but the Variax 300 that I have it's definitely great value for the money, and most of the models sound close enough. A great tool for studio/session work; bring just one Variax instead of ten different guitars (and it's probably also cheaper than only one of those..). The Variax will not replace all my other guitars, though, but it's a really great supplement.

  • Thank you rednebb your answer is very valuable for me, since i live in Venezuela and cant try one of those VARIAX here. I neither can try the AXE-FX but i´m saving money for buy one, i´m sure i can´t go wrong. You really Rock using the AXE-FX, you left me with the mouth open nailing the Brian May tone! If you have a review about the AXE-FX please let me know it i´ll be very interested in reading it, since you are an expermiented user, and have great ears for getting the right tones.

  • Juice was playd 1:1 as original! :) great job

  • Awesome!

  • Hello man. such an incredible skill to play. Have you heard SODA ESTEREO?? An argentin group. You should hear it and tell me about the sounds that guitarrist achieve. For me the master of effects!!

  • Thanks, no I haven't heard them, I'll check them out.

  • He, he, ikke før jeg tvilte på om det ville komme noe Slash-riff, så kommer du med dette :) Kjempebra - som vanlig!

  • Takk ;-)

  • For God Sake, please share your patches at Fractal Forum. You are THE GUY!!!! Congratulations!!

  • Thanks! If you go to the Fractalaudio forum; "share and request patches" department, you'll find a post from me with a link to where you can download my patches.

  • amazing...as always ;-)

  • you are really good

  • all i can say is WOW!!!

  • Perfect.

    CP

  • Hello Rednebb, i have seen lots of vids of AXE users squeezing its infinit capabilitys, but you really are the man in that area. One question man. Have you tried the FBT Verve?? Is the FR Atomic the best amplification for the AXE? Why??

  • Thanks! No, I haven't tried the FBT Verve, but I'm sure it's also a very good alternative, along with any other good FR system. I haven't compared the Atomic FR to other alternatives, and they might work equally fine, but the Atomic does the job for me..

  • Thanks ;-)

  • awesome :D:D

  • Imponerende! :)

  • Takk skal du ha! Lenge siden jeg har sett noe nytt fra deg nå forresten..?

  • Herregud så utrolig bra du gjorde still got the blues!

  • Tusen takk ;-)

  • sooo sick!!

  • Very cool

  • dæven du er god kjetil.

Men du må legge ut en video om hvordan du tar opp lyd så bra :P

  • Tusen takk !

  • do you know any rush?

  • Yes, I like Rush a lot, and I have played YYZ, but I didn't include them in this video series, sorry..

  • oh which video is it in then?

  • I haven't done any Rush video, sorry.

  • Once again, an awesome Video! It's always cool watching your demos and videos, rock on.

  • Awesome, as always. I really enjoy your videos.

  • Dritkult.. Hehe.. Her er gutta :)

Really cool Ketil. Make me wanna put out some new video´s :)

  • Takk! Ja, det må du gjøre ;-)

  • Bravo, Ketil! I just got an Ultra a couple of weeks ago and your vids/tones/techniques blow me away!

    Wes

  • Thanks, and good luck with your Axe-Fx! Hope you're happy with it..

  • I love that Carvin guitar you have, it sounds awesome! Great video Ketil 5*

  • Yeah, I love it too ;-) Thanks!

  • hah! This is my absolutely favourite era of rock!
