ronf528 is right about the sound. We've got a similar setup in the Netherlands. Though those powerlines fail because they snap every once in a while. Stopping trains over quite a distance and delaying hunderds or maybe thousands of people. And just to be clear: its not any cleaner then a car. Maybe when its full during rush hour. But the rest of the day its nearly empty so there goes the good effect. And where does you "clean" power come from? well about 75% from fossil fuel, coal and wood :)

It's just the motors building up torque. Electricity flows from the overhead power lines (catenary), down to the motors under the power car. The electric motors turn the axles. The process requires tens of thousands of volts and an enormous amount of amperage. What you're hearing is the motors reacting to the current being applied.
