Muslim Spain was definitely an improvement on the primitive intolerance of medieval Spain and it was through muslim Spain that the learning of ancient Greece and India eg. medicine, mathematics, astronomy were brought to western Europe, many Christians actually travelled to al-Andalus to study. This golden age was destroyed by fanatical intolerant catholics in 1492 and Spain endured centuries of ignorance and darkness (inquisition, anti-semitism etc) as a result.
