I was actually at that game! I was 7 years old, almost 8. It was the 2nd baseball game I ever went to.
Being a Mets fan, I remember asking my dad why Mets fans were cheering for 'that guy on the Braves for hitting a HR against US!?' My dad explained it was because of what he was accomplishing. I didnt quite get it at the time.
Thank you so much for sharing this video. Great memories
I remember being a this game in 1973 cause it was my brothers birthday and Hank Aaron hit 2 homeruns. Thanks for the footage and a memory I thought I couldn't relive lives on. Thanks!!!
Hi Chenarch. Great film clip of a great player and man. I was looking for clips of Hank on YouTube because yesterday (Feb. 5th 2010) was his 76th birthday.
By the way, have you thought of donating this film to the Hall of Fame? I'm sure they would love to have a copy of this in their collection.
@chenarch Awesome video (and equally awesome song). Man, if I had to pick one year I could go back to (if I were able to perform time travel) it would be 1973. What a time. I feel sorry for all of these 20 and 30-somethings (even the 40-somethings who were too young to have remembered the early 70s) who missed out on the 70s. I wouldn't trade my age for anything in the world.
That guy was some ball player. It was Koufax who named him "Bad Henry" because he had such a tough time with him. You're a lucky guy to have been there because that era is long gone. A certain innocence and class about the game and the athletes who played it.
This is very cool that you have that footage .. something so authentic about the way Super 8 looks. I noticed the Shea crowd around you appeared to be applauding as he approached #700.
YouTube has informed me that my use of this snippet of Dobie Gray's "Drift Away" (1973) for which I fully credited him, is in violation of UMG's ownership or license of this music.
How is it that a rap singer or a groove artist can use big chunks of other people's songs and it's called "sampling"?
Anyway, so this vid will have a "buy" button from now on, which is great. Maybe Hank and Dobie will purchase the song after watching!
i come and watch it every now and then cause Drift Away and this footage fits so good, it's too bad i couldn't have been born in the late 60's haha =)
Yes it was a Saturday game. I never could have gone during the week, that's for sure. I had to beg my dad to take me, etc, etc... lol. That's great you saw it!! Aaron on the Braves and Mays on the Mets made it memorable for sure. Also other great Braves played like Ralph Garr...
You're right. The 73' Braves are still the only team in baseball history to have 3 guys hit 40+ HRs in the same lineup. The problem is they couldn't compete with the Big Red Machine or the great Dodger teams of the 70's in the NL West. Those Braves were very good in a rough division.
True. Also, think of the fact that the Braves were then in the WEST division, and all that time spent flying to the west coast from Atlanta to play in SF, LA, SD. Oh wait, that was true for those teams too. Never mind : )
Was this a Saturday game? I was watching this on tv if so, on WTCG channel 17 out of Atlanta. The announcers were Ernie Johnson and Milo Hamilton at that time.
Just looked it up. Aarons 2 HR's were hit off of Mets starter George Stone. An odd thing is Tom Seaver would be used as a pinch runner later in the game. Seaver was not known for his running speed. He ran for Ed Kranepool. What does that tell you about The Kranes running ability?
Thanks for checking that out. I have a few seconds of footage of the second HR as well as a few seconds of Mays rounding the bases. Mays had a truly distinctive running style. I think he got a double that day. I will try to post these soon...
What do you think of when you think of Shoeless Joe: a great batting average or the Black Sox scandal of 1919. If you know your stuff, then you know the answer to that one. I'm not trying to argue that Bonds isn't great, but he doesn't break the record without 'roids. You have no proof of your allegation regarding Aaron, and even if true, uppers don't produce the same effect as 'roids. Bonds is tainted, Aaron isn't. Deal with it.
Biggerb225, you have absolutely no clue. So Gibson, Koufax, Marichal, Newcombe, et al aren't as good as the pitchers today? You know not of which you speak. I saw Gibson. he is every bit as good as Clemens ever thought about being...and that without steroids. Bonds is a great talent. It is truly a shame that he tarnished his legacy to the game. I really mean that. He is one of the greatest players all time, but so was Joe Jackson.
No doubt it's Aaron all the way. Ruth set the great numbers too nothing taken from him. Hank battled racism and the many threats that came his way just simply because he was born a black man. Ruth was a beloved superstar that enjoyed his career differently than Aaron did. Bonds may have or may not have cheated his way through but Aarons perseverance makes him the greatest homerun hitter of all time.
not from the pitcher either huh.. Pitchers not close to as good as they are now.. Aaron took uppers.. Uppers were all they had back then.. If Aaron played today why in the world do people think he would not use steroids?? It's just stupid. Players will do whatever they can for an edge.. You can only match up players from their generations.. Is Aaron better then Mays?? NO Clemente, Mantle, Robinson, Banks ?? Now look at Bonds.. Nobody is close. Steroids or not NOBODY COMES CLOSE TO BONDS TODAY.
Aaron played for the love of the game, not because he felt the world owed him anything. Unlike Bonds, who was arrogant and jealous enough that he thought he had to be better than everyone. It wasn't about production with Bonds, it was simply about money. Plus Aaron part of his career when the pithcing mound was several feet closer, and pitchers did waht ever they could to get a guy out; i.e. spit, vaseline, etc. Uppers wouldn't help a persons performance anyway you jerky.
I was just a teenager with a super 8 movie camera. I hope to post footage from the same game of Mays getting a double and Aaron hitting #696... Check back...
Fabulous film! Thanks for sharing it!! I was blessed to be in Atlanta Stadium when The Hammer hit 715. Incredible! I'll never forget that feeling as a fan as long as I live.
I am a big Hank Aaron fan but Babe Ruth SAVED baseball after the Black Sox Scandal nearly ruined it.
He made baseball THE sport in America.
Ruth also was the greatest home run hitter, bar none and the best player of his era. I don't think Aaron was the best of his era as I lean towards Willie Mays.
Compare their stats, Aaron was great, very consistent, but Ruth had INCREDIBLE numbers in less at bats and games.
Right. But Hank was a better human being because he had to deal with crap that Babe Ruth didn't have to deal with... like not being able to stay in the same hotel room as his team or eat in the same restaurants as his team mates.
You think all of his team mates appreciated him being black? No. His own team mates gave him hell.
Nothing like Jim Crow to bring a team together...
So when you add all of that plus his baseball skill... there is no comparison. He is the best.
I respect all fhat about Hank Aaron, I really do. But, no way he is the best of all time. As a human being, the guy is great especially considering all he went through but in terms of skill, Ruth, Ted Williams, Willie Mays and Stan Musial rank above Aaron.
In fact, if Ted Williams did not lose 5 prime years to the service (WWII & Korean War) he would have been the home run king. He sacrificed for his country and he could probably have used his fame to get out of the service.
im not saying babe is better, im saying babe had an equal or greater impact on baseball than hank (hank arron offcourse was a great man and ballpalayer)
Granted Ruth, would have put up collasal numbers in the HRs if he hadn't been a pitcher at the start of his career. No one knows what numbers he would have had.
so is this like the only footage of #695?

i really like how the song at 0:23 when the drum is hit is at almost the exact moment Hank Aaron connected to the baseball really cool

Thanks Aggie! I did that intentionally, the footage is crude
but the song really adds some Summer of '73 spice to it...

Babe was great. His impact on the game was not greater than Henry Aaron's was.
And Henry Aaron is still a great man. His impact on the game and calling for fair representation of all people in all facets of baseball continues.
I like the Babe. He got short-changed and lied to when promised a managerial job at the end of his career.
But his impact on the game, while great, is not greater than Henry Aaron's was.

Who has more home runs?
Also, Ruth did not have serious death threats directed against him for nothing more than the color of his skin. Aaron did.
And Hammerin' Hank did it all without steroids, cigars or any other garbage.
Babe Ruth was great. So was Sadaharu Oh.
But there has never been a home run hitter greater than Henry Aaron.
Best of all time. There is no argument about that.
