Well, I just got the this older XP computer working again. Had a bad ram chip.
Those crystal kit switches are a joke. The kits are just an easier way to get extra freqs out of a radio. I removed one from a Madison base as it had the very same problem as this 142 GTL has. The 142 GTL works fine off the PLL chip with a simple mod and a change of a crystal. However, radios like the 146 GTL need the crystal kit as the replacement mod chip is now unobtainium.
@TheZeke1974 These kits are ok if you dont want to mess with the PLL, as most folks dont, although with these kits you almost always want a open clarifier, another alternitive to this is just stick a VFO in there instead! :-)
