Would that we all had conductors and orchestras such as this, wouldn't singing be effortless? I love the way he is so sensitive to the song and singer, it is truly magnificent. Mozart would love this, no doubt.
Leontyne Price was a fabulous Mozart soprano. She sang Donna Anna and Donna Elvira in Giovanni, Pamina in Magic Flute and Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte. Her Countess in Figaro is sublime. I believe she never sang the Countess on stage, just in recital as seen here but her Countess is perfection. Brava Leontyne Price
Leontyne is of course my #1, and I always loved her Mozart singing. She once said the music of Mozart and Verdi had been her voice's best friends. Brava!
I love the way Ms. Price used a very forward lyrical timbre to sing Mozart. This is definitely very different from the way she sings Verdi & Puccini as it should be. This reminds me of her sound from earlier in her career. I thought her voice had lost that character over time... I see that she still has it even towards the end of her career. Bravo!!!
Her voice puts Mozart to shame. Before you hit the "thumbs down" button to your right, allow me to rephrase that: her incredible voice makes this look as easy to sing as a children's nursery rhyme.
Our music teacher showed us a video of this in class. I was 15. I've never forgotten it. I was completely transfixed. Thanks for bringing back such a wonderful memory.
Ms. Price gives such expressivity to the recitative; it's not a throwaway. The aria is sung with a caressing, yearning melancholy. Even though Ms. Price never sang the Contessa onstage or recorded it, this performance and her "Porgi Amor" are enough to easily convince me that she would have been the role's greatest exponent.
@Chasson0318 She never sang the role onstage--only the aria in recitals and concerts like this. The Mozart roles she sang onstage are Fiordiligi, Donna Anna, Donna Elvira, and Pamina.
This performance was a special gift to Mr. Bing.

@superdooperstupor hey there! Price did sing this onstage and there are recordings just in case you'd like to look around.

Jessaye Norman does not hold a match to this.

Leontyne Price does this wonderfully. Jessye Norman does this superbly. Both are amazing. Why the need to compare apples and oranges?
