The vocal combination of 14 year old AJ Lee and 19 year old Molly Tuttle is one of those rare blends that has huge potential. The big stage is waiting for them.
I was watching some Tony Rice videos.any this keep showing up on the side the picture of the girls and Gram Parson name made me curious.after watching this and several more Tuttles and A J Lee videos count me as impressed.so much skill in such young people.I know it takes many hours of work to get this good.i hope they enjoy playing it as much as i do listening to it.
Don't insult Mr.Bill Monroe. Mr. Monroe is Bluegrass there is a really big difference. I hope that is not order you rank them. Mr. Monroe had more talent in his little finger. Then all the ones you listed together.
@bluegrasssingingman Bluegrass is a sub-genre of country, just like Western Swing and Honky-Tonk are sub-genres of country. I agree there is a really big difference between the styles but it's still country. It was also a big difference between Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis but they both sure as hell played jazz...
@MrRazorblade999 A sub-genre because you choose to group it with them. Bluegrass never came from country. Bill Monroe formed Bluegrass out of Mountain Music. There is no similarity to country. I know a lot of people category it with country. The structures aren't even close. So which is it. People claim Bill Monroe stole Bluegrass from Blues.LOL Blues or Country. Just because Bluegrass pickers are country folk doesn't mean it is Country.
@bluegrasssingingman You don't seem to grasp what I'm talking about. There is nothing homogeneous about country. It is a definition of various kinds of music that descends from the same roots: the folk music from european immigrants in particular, which developed into what we call Old Timey/Mountain music, i.e. the origin of country. From that country evolved in different directions, among them Hillbilly, Western Swing, Honky-Tonk, and Bluegrass.
@bluegrasssingingman Of course I know who Keith Whitley is! He is one of my favorites. I just wanted to know why he in particular should be proud. If you had said Gram Parsons, who wrote the song and made it famous, it would have made more sense.
@bluegrasssingingman A matter of taste I guess. I think they are equally great and just below the greatest in country music: Hank Williams, Jerry Lee Lewis, George Jones, Bill Monroe, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.
Don't know if y'all noticed, but in a Youtube search of 'Hickory Wind', this video came in second right after Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris Hickory Wind slideshow. :))
@daveband72: pretty unfair to compare AJ to Emmylou. Obviously, Emmylou is the best ever, but give this little girl a chance and she'll keep what Emmylou has established going for many more years. It's great to see youngsters with this kind of talent. Keep at it Tuttles and AJ!!
With all the problems California has, it is so good to see young Californians like this perform. It really gives me hope that the future is better than it appears. Sorry to be so down.
Im blown away every time I hear aj sing. This song is amazeing ,the harmony of the strings and the harmony of the vocal cords. All I can say is well done
I just can't say enough about the talent that is in this family band they have such a full sound i'm blown away and aj lee is such a good singer and player. i wish they would come to san antonio texas i would be in the front row
Songwriters should pay this group to perform or remake their tunes. I hadn't heard alot of the tunes, and when I look them up, they all are found to be wanting compared to the Tutles & AJ.
This video makes me feel so good I watch it at least once a day. AJ's singing and Molly's guitar playing and harmonies are just too much. I know the band can deliver smoking bluegrass but this is my favorite. Especially like the way the understated guitar fills weave around and support the gorgeous vocal. You may be young people (Jack, not so much) but I can't imagine anyone doing this better.
Even though she did not play mandolin, I feel like I am watching Emmylou as a preteen. Similar appearance and style. Nobody can do again what Emmylou has done in her career, but I think it is so possible that AJ will be consistantly interesting and find great people to collaborate with just as EH did and create a great body of work in future years. If I have any complaint, if you want to call it that, she needs to let herself go a bit more and smile. She is maybe too serious. Have fun AJ!
@girlsingerfan. I feel what you are asking for will come with time, but I will add that her serious approach has probably helped to get her where she now is.Also I am not at all sure that it would be right to smile when performing
what is a very sad song. I cant help but think what happened to Gram at only 26.The song itself is sad and you must know Gillian Welches rendition is sung in a serious way.
@ianwalkerdownland Yes, you are correct considering this song. I guess maybe I should not have made this comment on this song. It was a general observation, having watched pretty much all her videos. It is not really that big of a deal to me, but when I saw her smiling a bit on the video Pins and Needles, I said, hmmm, wonder why this is the first time I have seen her do that? She is so ultra talented, beautiful and with a perfect voice for this kind of music.
@girlsingerfan .Just watched pins and needles and I see what you mean, still she"s going to be around for a long time to come you can bet, and its only polish
Got some water in my eyes just now. Man! A new favorite for me, AJ Lee, singing Gram Parsons and Emmylou also being one of my top 3 favorite female vocalist of all time. Linda Ronstadt and Eva Cassidy being the other two. This girl is perfect for this kind of music. Simply amazing.
My favorite version ever of one of my very favorite songs. The folks that must feel honored and pleased if they have heard this must include Emmy Lou, GP, Gillian and Rawlings. The instrumental breaks are just as tasteful as the singing, and the harmonies are heart breakingly lovely. Wonderful.
it would be better if someone could hear the words clearer...very good though..
