I read once that they had difficulties capturing the shitty sound quality they needed for this song; no matter what settings they set their high-end recording equipment to, it was just too good. They ended up propping open the door of the music studio and playing out in the hall to do it.

Industrial goes back to 1982 with Skinny Puppy, though artists before that like Tangerine Dream though it was not called Industrial. Late 70's roots of punk and early industrial were out there. Just listen to early Tangerine Dream. Rock music with primative synths...

This song was written by Kirk Thatcher (the punk on the bus) who also did the vocals. He was also an associate producer for the movie, the voice of the vulcan computer, worked behind the scenes in ILM's creature shop on Return of the Jedi, and wrote for the Muppets. Quite a talented guy.
