Gold Squadron is one of the many Squadrons that uses the Y-wing - especially in the days of A New Hope. It was the backbone of the Rebel fighterfleet. The X-wing was just fairly new , like the B-wing and A-wing by the time of Return of the Jedi.
Only one Y-wing of Gold Squadron however survived the run on the Deathstar.
In addition, Y-wings have extremely tough reinforced armor and deflector shield systems and carry a devastating array of firepower. Y-wings are also very easily modified and upgraded.
B-wings have been heavily altered in EU material as well, albeit to their benefit unlike the Y-wing's somewhat derogatory portrayal (both contrary to what LFL tech specs dictate).
Unfortunately, outside of the films and LFL tech material, Y-wings have been given a very (inaccurate) bad rap in the EU realm. Countless times have they been inaccurately pigeon-holed in the "slow & sluggish bomber-only" category (especially in Star Wars games). Quite the contrary. Y-wings are very effective multi-role craft and are actually not much slower and less maneuverable than X-wings are. Which is saying a lot.
The Y-wing truly is an amazing craft. It's the most versatile fighter in the Rebel Fleet and easily one of the most versatile craft in the galaxy during the entire Galactic Civil War period.
I agree, the Y-wing is always stated as the "workhorse" of the rebellion, in the PC games its always doing the attack runs and putting its ass on the line, damn X-wings always taking the glory...
