great lesson! i like it :) my only advice maybe you could put the 'final product'-normal speed-lick of the matter on the beginning of the video, so the audience will get the general idea of the lick :) still, nice lesson :)
@LipeGuitarraJA1 That guitar was one of those Herman Li signature models that I was borrowing from a student of mine for that week while my strat was getting re-fretted... Thanks!
This is more commonly called economy picking, little sweeps over 2 or 3 strings with lots of changes in pick direction as you play through a scale form. Sweep picking as a technique generally keeps the pick flow longer, say through 4, 5 or 6 string arpeggios with far less changes in pick direction. Good videos in general though, well done!
You have achieved technical mastery of the instrument (referring here primarily to the Bach Partita you play in another video) and share it with us, free of charge, with obvious interest and competence. Many thanks.

Gambale actually coined the term "sweep picking" to describe this. Though most of us do differentiate between economy picking and sweep picking such that sweep picking is one arpeggio in one direction (all downs or all ups).
I would be interested in seeing a fingering variation for those of us who have Danny Gatton fingers (short and stubby) not long spider/Jimmy Hendrix fingers.

Great lesson but - at 2:45 you state that, "If you want to continue going in the same direction, you have to have an even number of notes." You state this right after telling us that you must use an even number of notes to *change* direction.
I'm sure you meant to say "odd" at 2:45.....not trying to be critical or anything :-)
Ahh....I just figured out that this was the "A major" pentatonic scale. I was trying to figure out how this was an "A minor" pentatonic scale since the notes are different. Maybe you should write this down somewhere so that we can wrap our head around the music theory of it too. Thanks for the great lesson!

while I think this technique is useful to study, I think the 2 note tradtional approach to pentatonics is much better for blues/blues-rock playing.. to sweep really well takes serious effort to get it smooth.. I dont think it's necessarily faster.. just listen to someone like Eric Johnson.. he's fluid, fast and classy
wow cheers for this video, i dont think he could make it more clear or be more helpful - he knows exactly what hes talkin about :) n the quality is crystal clear, u cant goo wrong with this video!!
@cunigham Its basically alternate picking any notes on the same string and sweep picking when changing strings. Does that help answer your question? :)
@Adrain30 Yes that is correct. To be able to think of any major pentatonic's, minor pentatonic equivalent just think of its relative minor key. For example G Major Penatonic is the same notes as E Minor Pentatonic. D Major Pentatonic is the same notes as B Minor pentatonic etc.. Cheers!! Carl..
This is a great lesson, you're a great teacher. The only suggestion I would make is to play the lick at tempo at the beginning (with some background chord reference), before you start digging into the details. It would help to understand the overall tonality of what we're trying to hear. That being said, great lesson and I appreciate your work!!
Yea. its prety sick. Ibanez just came out with another in Blonde. and Ive got the Ibanez Jem as one of my guitars, witch also has the handel. cheek out my vids i use it in my Dammit cover.
@pockthehairy Yeah I am a strat guy and the Herman Li isn't really my cup of tea especially since I am not a big fan of Floyd Rose trems. But it played very easy and does what it is supposed to do well. But yes, I was happy to get my strat back so I could give the Herman Li back to my student. :)
@GuitarLessons365 seems like a good piece of gear but makes me sick that li should get it as his sig. But then I guess it's popularity over style these days, as always. Nice video anyway sorry about my whining
@sirral11 Lol, more like you're an embarrassed little dumbfuck who tried to act smart when he didnt know what he was talking about. =) yeah..."guitar nerd". great insult, jackass. you may as well have called me "the bitch-getter". gtfo of youtube, stupid little shit.
yeah great video man.
If anyones interested, this is based on the frank gamble monster licks and speed picking video/ book tutorial

loads of beautiful wee moveable melodic patterns can be derived from these shapes :)
and with devotion, cranked up to fret melting tempo, just like Frank....
