RIP Bam Bam - what a great shot of him drumming at the start of this video, and a great example of his over the top drumming style. I was SO fortunate to have met him through the So. Cal. Rainbow Family and to have been blessed with his energy and music.
P.S. - I WAS AT THESE SHOWS!!!! This tour is where I finally passed the 150 show mark!
@trpnstn1 Ha! The video started and I said hey that's Bam Bam!...He used to give me shit at every show for selling grilled cheese sandwiches...I was just telling my 16 year old who is a vegetarian that he used to say "the poor cows utters!"...WTF, It's just a buck...Grilled cheese your face!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wasters, mooches, fuck ups, posers, whores, deadbeats. That is 99.8% of the so called deadheads. Let one of these fools ask me to smoke them up, sorry I work for what I have.....
Dude, I've seen that guy at 7:58 on Venice Beach! He's there every time I go, skating around, playing his guitar with a huge smile on his face. Wow, that guy's a legend!
I was there at the parking lot on this particular day. Every time the Dead came to town I would be in the parking lot all day for the whole weekend when they played. I really miss those magical experiences. I loved all the great food ("kind" burritos, veggie stir fry, falafels, etc), drum circles, brownies, cool people, the Kama Kosmic Krusader (guy on roller blades playing guitar), etc. I was bummed when they outlawed bonfires in the parking lot after 1985.
wishing so bad i was this age in the 90's :((( today sucks!!! it breaks my heart i could not live during this time. its all about the the thuggish rap music, pop, and autotune shit now :'(
@QuEEnSkiTTolZ In a lot of ways the hip scene has gotten bigger now than it was then. You wouldnt believe. Most of the best festivals are in California though. Message me if you want info about it. Peace
that weekend was one of the best of my life, first time hippy flipping, we hooked up with my dad at this show got some hash went down to the front (jerry side) smoked out all the sisters and brothers, second set (if the year is correct) open with Helps on the way Slipknot, Franklins mind blowin Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou love you Jerry we miss you so much
GD parking lot pre show was somethin else At Deer creek in 1994 I saw some really unusual stuff and people there . A grilled cheese sandwich or veggie pitta would bring things down to reality somewhat . What fun and greatness those days were . Thanks for sharing there From someone who lived in Iowa for 16 years . And now in Chile - S America
After 2002 it turn into no selling anything at the shows, no tailgate parties, and noone was to show up without a ticket. that was at the request of the dead. Maybe not their choice but somone prettty powerful told them to stop the parties before a show. But up until then it was such a trip to see scenes like this video.
My friend and I would have "Who has the dirtiest feet " contest just among the 2 of us. It was pretty funny
@laneiam Na man I went on the 2003 and 2004 Dead tour and there was shakedown street at all the shows. People selling everything from awesome food, glass works (pipes, beads, etc), crystals, music, hand drums, clothing, basically anything you wanted.
Also there were tons of people looking for a miracle and they got it, how are the venue staff going to know if those people that got their miracle didn't pay for it?
Even Phil & Friends shows Ratdog shows Shakedown street was still raging.
lot style hasnt changed too much in the last 17 years... minus all the tree thuggers this looks like a pretty current lot scene.. love it... our fasion is obviously timeless
ABSOLUTELY CLASSIC!!! So Crucial!! Thanks for the footage and the Memories....... This world is SO EPHEMERAL after all. Meditation is the key........ I found after all this good stuff....... QUAN YIN!!!!!!!!
How to get a ticket to a sold out show - walk all the way to the very beginning of where people are driving into the show. That way you are the first person they see looking for a ticket. The later it gets the better your odds because quite a few people have the ticket for a friend that canceled at the last second. I rarey got shut out, but I had to work real hard for lots of those.
I was at this show and just saw my friend walk by the girl talking at 2:34. must watch again, more closely. BTW- you negative people are really annoying- just keep it to yourselves, please!
I remember being at a Dead show in 1987 at the Roanoke Civic Center and this dickhead at the beginning of this video, the one with the dreads playing his drum out of time, approached my brother and I, we were sitting in my truck doing bong hits, and asks us to smoke him out. Our weed was dank, but he didn't like it because it was grown in upstate N.Y. not in California. What a fucking dickhead. I have many more stories about the peace loving deadheads, most just like this one.
this guy filming this is a stupid fuucckkeer , he doesnt have any idea what its all about. interviewing people that have been once or twice... taking the piss..after 400 GD shows,,Jerry Garcia Band. Mr Saunders, etc my soul is fat and full of light but i would peacefully kick his arse
Wow you must have been what, about 19 years old when Garcia died? You live in Australia? I would venture to say you didn't see the Dead or JGB more than 10 times, but like most deadheads you're a liar and an asshole. Yeah he should have interviewed someone like you or maybe that self righteous hippie with the dreads playing his deum out of time. I saw that piece of crap at several shows and he never greeted me with anything but condescension. So you are a true deadhead= an asshole an a liar.
Those were fun times, The Silver Bowl in Vegas were the best. Alpine Valley were good also. Iam 54 years old and still love the Dead. The vibe has been gone for years , but still miss the shows..
Those were fun times. I was at all the LV Silver Bowl shows and could write a book with the awesome memories I have of *every* parking lot at GD and JGB shows. The people you meet, the expansion of mind and spirit. It was the introduction to the GD brother and sisterhood that lasted until the end. Never was there doubt that you would run into someone you had met in the past, and greeted with a hug, a smile, and positive vibes.
The beauty of the memories remain, even though Jerry is gone.
@shakedownstreet48 Yea us old dead head supposedly are to old to know what going on. If they only knew what we know and if they only saw what we saw. Just absoultely amazing
I got so ripped off at this show. Hippies broke into my car and ripped off everything my Cam Corder which I had video of this show to. This was the end of the dead.
@jojojigaboo I'm bettin' there were always SOME put-ons at dead shows. Fritz the Cat was puttin people on way back in the day, There was just a lot MORE of them towards the end, when the band got so HUGE. They were way too big for Jerry's taste--that's a matter of historical record. He advocated a break, possibly for 2years. It would have brought short term financial pain, but it would have been good in the long run. Thin the herd. Refresh, They were penny wise, pound foolish about it.
I was too young to go to the show but I lived close enough to the old Arco that at the time we could HEAR the concerts, Yea. We went fishing and I remember some Dead Head walking into our polls and where our hooks were in the water and my dad was like "what are you doing?" and he was like "I'm just drawn here maaaan" haha.
Great old vid, btw, I'm raising awareness about the Chinese Communist Party persecution of 70 million Falun Gong spiritual practitioners for 10 years in China. They are put in slave-labor camps, forced to make stuff sold here. A 2009 UN report said vital organs are even taken from them and sold on the black market. Falun Gong practitioners are peaceful, not terrorists. China is where all the jobs are going, and the media doesn't cover it. It must stop. Thanks.
Rad...I was at the Cal Expo '92 parking lot party but I missed '93. That roller-blading guitar dude is a Venice Beach regular. You can see him in one of my vids.
Thanks so much for sharing that. I think I see some familiar faces.
I was somewhere in that eugene lot. I got a miracle!!! well august was when I was there when Indigo girls opened. Wish you well. Whops actually 08/13/93 my bad
In Eugene Wa. 1991, my friends got "lost". I had their tickets, which I quickly turned into "Miracle Tickets". I gave them to two crazy hippy chicks who gave me 20 doses and a gram of hash.
Cool clip. I saw my first Dead show at Cal Expo on my 18th birthday in 1991. Very fun. Bought a Guatamalan blanket in the parking lot and a veggie burrito from some guy selling them from the trunk of his car. When we went inside I registered to vote a booth set up inside. :)
favoriting! the 13 yr old with the shirt, dude with the bulls hat, the two plasterville stoner chicks, the guy who says "kitty-kitty", grilledcheese, the 4 hours that it took that guy to make the peace sign and last but not least the guy who fucking WAILED at the end...hells yeah i can only imagine how wicked of a time that was...to bad i was only 6 then :(
The Skating guitar guy was Harry Perry, he's a ficture at Venice Beach, He was in some movie, just a cameo shot of him skating on the Venice boardwalk, it may have been point-blank-not sure, I first saw him in like 1998-1999 at Cal-Expo Dead shows.
Pretty much everybody. I think most of us were grateful that Jerry even made it to 1993. We all knew our time with him was limited and that he was extremely lucky to have made it as far as he did.
Oh yea I know, I just wished I cold have seen them play with Jerry, I plan on seeing them play there next time around, I didnt get tickets to these shows that are going on now, I hope i can get tickets for the next one though
oh yea rolling skating hendrix wanna-be was at venice beach all the time made people PAY to take a picture with him hadn't heard his actual guitar sound in at least 15 years not goot
I'm seeing them (well, "The Dead") when they come to NJ this April. Do any of you guys think it will be anything remotely like this? Or will it just be people showing up 45 minutes before the music and going straight to their seats?
Thank You for this blast from the past, I spent many days on nights in that parking lot. I saw my first show there in '86 (with a miracle ticket). Love that you bookended the video with Bam Bam on Drums kicking it off and Kama the Kozmic crusader ending it with his guitar, skates & turbin................ total classic !!
I drove down from Oregon for these intimate little shows. What a sweet little venue. The shakedown street outside was so great. I ran into so many friends all over the place. Great shows for my birthday. I slept in my truck at some park with a bunch of cool people. Now I vote republican and make a bunch of money and give most of it away BY CHOICE--be cause I want to BE WITH YOU, BE WITH YOU, I WANT TO BE WITH YOU, BE WITH YOU!!!! I want to be with you!!!
everybody knew when the dead was in sac when the traffic on the 80 freeway was stopped dead, with folks waiting to get into the parking lots causing a backup onto the highway. it was quite a site though : )
the rollerblading bullseye guitar guy is named fantuzzi and he lived in venice when i did, he is really really cool and under that turbin he had dreads that dragged on the floor
theres just so much love when fellow deadheads join up and listen to what they love. this video was actually pretty trippy how it sped up and everything.
AHH to be young and going to shows and goo goo ball parking lots and "KICK DOWN SCHWILLS" narguals etc... Sigh... Thanks for the shot of nastalgia....
1st drummer I think I know. I went to 5 shows also. Hard to believe this is 15 years ago. One show at Oak coliseum really sucked, they crammed everybody inside of these white lines inside, and the band was tired, you could see it. They played good as usual, but I hated all the guards. Outside shows were better. I never got a "miracle". That's why it was called a miracle. I was jealous.
Not miracle tickets, the Dead are known to let anyone in who wants to be there, tickets or not

I camped next to that skating guitar player guy at bonnaroo 08 in the vending lot.
macasta 2 years ago
The Skating guitar guy was Harry Perry, he's a ficture at Venice Beach, He was in some movie, just a cameo shot of him skating on the Venice boardwalk, it may have been point-blank-not sure, I first saw him in like 1998-1999 at Cal-Expo Dead shows.

@Jerryjeffelvis
that dude was in Point Of No Return starring Bridget Fonda.
BTW, obama is a schmuck too.
GD is apolitical - the surviving members were misguided by doing a concert for o voters.
jerry would have NEVER done that - ever!

wow, 1993, who woulda thought a horrible, horrible tragedy would happen2 years later
sgguitarplayer10 2 years ago
Pretty much everybody. I think most of us were grateful that Jerry even made it to 1993. We all knew our time with him was limited and that he was extremely lucky to have made it as far as he did.

Oh yea I know, I just wished I cold have seen them play with Jerry, I plan on seeing them play there next time around, I didnt get tickets to these shows that are going on now, I hope i can get tickets for the next one though

"do you think its jerry's lyrics" ... "well his lyrics are pretty powerful at times and at other times they're pretty meaningless"
jerry didn't write lyrics, hunter wrote all the words and they were never meanignless

I'm seeing them (well, "The Dead") when they come to NJ this April. Do any of you guys think it will be anything remotely like this? Or will it just be people showing up 45 minutes before the music and going straight to their seats?
NYY079382 2 years ago
it will be like this. it was in 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2004... so i think it will be like this!

What a great slice! Even tho I followed them summers in the midwest, this could have been filmed at ANY show, which makes it so great.

That's mostly cool and all but why in the sweet FUCK would you ever vote for republicans?

everybody knew when the dead was in sac when the traffic on the 80 freeway was stopped dead, with folks waiting to get into the parking lots causing a backup onto the highway. it was quite a site though : )

Hey where have all the flowers gone?
Where has that Voodoo gone?
Hardly any traffic police, hardly any guards, no barbed wire fences?
Last but not least the prices, certainly no rip offs?
Jerry was certainly no foolish businessmen _ but that money was for all, no obsessive personal accumulation.
