I liked this. porky is relatively the same character, which is very important. his voice is..bah. but I love how they modernized the Looney Toons with this one [and their humor a bit to appeal to today's kids], with the rock concert and telephone ad. if Jones, Mckimson, Clampett, Freleng, and the rest were making cartoons today, you know they would spoof pop culture like they did here. and frankly, I think they did a great job. although I don't really like the opening to the 2003 shorts...
Kill me. There's no reason to live in this world if this exists, and the overwhelming amount of suck has left me paralyzed, so I can't do it myself. SOMEBODY KILL ME
Not to mention that Porky is quite out of character here. He uses bribery and female disguises, not to mention extreme stunts that he'd normally prefer to avoid.
Granted, he's a character to do solo since he's pretty much the lovable straight-man type, but they could do better.
The part when Porky spits out his coffee non-stop (@ 1:15-1:24) looks like something from a YouTube Poop, even though this was made a few years before YouTube was created.
Speaking of which, this Looney Tunes short is so awful, it deserves the Youtube Poop treatment.
An okay modern short (Billy West isn't THAT bad as Porky, at least they sped up his voice in this one). It's nice just to have something with Porky as title character again, rather than as a side character for Daffy or Sylvester.
Funny for you to say that since these shorts were produced by a former Simpsons writer and many of the people working on the shorts are involved with Family Guy.
To be fair the Looney Tunes have always been about topical, parody humor (especially the 1940s shorts), it's just the four decade hiatus made their transition to modern-day culture less smooth.
It could have been much worse. If you want to see a truly disasterous transition to Family Guy type humor, watch the newer seasons of The Simpsons.
The animation looks crappy because the dvd ripper he copied this on is total crap, I think it would look slightly better if the rip was of better quality. But everything else I'm with you on. This is WAY too similar to "A Goofy Movie" story-wise, and Walter Murphy's compositions are better-suited for Family Guy rather than Looney Tunes.
stop putting this on the DVD Ripper it's low quality animation I can bet you anything it took them no more than a week to makes this. Classic cartoons, the ones that look good, take time. That's why they looked so good because heart and soul plus Blood and sweet were put into them. Cartoons are not ment to be made on computers, if you want it to be good you have to draw it yourself
@Number1AnimationFan Totally makes sense, the Director and Music Director are from family guy. Actually Dan Povenmire has worked on a lot of stuff. He did Rocko's Modern Life, thats enough street cred for me.
He definitely does an alright Elmer Fudd, not so much at Bugs. As for Porky, I like Bob Bergen's Porky better. Of course, NOBODY will EVER match Mel Blanc!
Why couldn't they get Bob Bergen to do Porky for this one? He's pretty much the only one who could handle Porky good enough out of all the post-Blanc voices.
Bob Bergen was hired to do Porky, but Larry Doyle wanted Bergen to voice Porky differently (for reasons nobody will ever figure out), and Bergen argued with Doyle until he was eventually fired from the project. Billy West, who will do anything for a buck, was brought in to voice thecharacter how Doyle wanted.
Heh. Guess Spike Brandt would've been a better producer for these newer cartoons then, since he's the only one at WB to actually know how to use an animated character correctly(look at the cartoons he produced and compare them to this).
From what I heard, Doyle was insistant on using the method Blanc did, voicing the character at a lower register and then speeding up the recording, which Bergen believed didn't work to the same effect it did with Blanc. May also be the reason Alaskey didn't take part, who always voices Daffy in his natural voice.
While Bergen is better at acting Porky his roles suffer a little due to using his natural voice, not being able to acheive the same pitch and emotions as Blanc, especially Tweety.
Yeah, Bergen admitted to such in an interview. He (unlike Blanc) never smoked so it made it even harder for him to perfectly imitate the voice. Porky sounded way too high pitched in this...and stuttered way too much.
My guess is this is why Alaskey didn't play part in the Larry Doyle shorts either (though since he can voice Sylvester near perfectly I would have expected his Daffy to come out well under this method).
Still it would have been interesting to hear how Bergen sounds using Blanc's method, judging by how West's interpretation was recieved it couldn't have done much worse. He still does a decent Porky and Speedy with his natural voice, mixed about Tweety though.
Bergen said in an interview that when they sped up his voice, it sounded "like a stuttering Alvin the Chipmunk". I really respect Bergen for leaving the project, especially since he's wanted to voice Porky since he was a kid. He left because it was low quality.
I agree with you. Even if his was as bad as Bergen says, I doubt it would be worse than Billy West's Porky. I don't get why they had to give him a daughter. Doyle specifically said in an interview that these shorts weren't going to be "sitcommy", but situations like these are as "sitcommy" as it gets, with the rebel daughter and the square father. It's horribly cliche and inappropriate for the character and the LTs in general.
I don't think West's Porky is outright terrible though I admit he can't act the character as well as Bergen.
I'm mixed about the short's concept really. Giving him a family seemed like a bit of development (though it worked better in Bah Humduck), I always saw Porky as a more sentimental character than the other zanier cast.
Also be it good or bad, this is one of the few modern pieces to really focus on Porky, let alone use him as the title character.
What bothered me about giving Porky a daughter was how horribly it was executed. I didn't mind it in Bah Humduck because she was just a little girl and not some teenage brat that disrespected Porky and made him look like a loser . In fact, I thought it was more appropriate and actually kinda sweet, since, as you noted, Porky is indeed more of a sentimental character. Still can't believe Doyle fired Bergen. Heck, the guy wanted to play Porky since he was a kid!
There were perhaps more complex matters into why Doyle fired him or Bergen quit. It did seem to be an extreme action to take just for that. Billy West wasn't THAT bad to me though. The worst Porky replacement is probably the one from the 'That's All Folks' outtakes.
Well, Porky's shtick kinda comes from him being a loser. He's always been tormented and victimized by the other wackier cast. When he stopped being a fall guy and was reduced to a sidekick and 'audience surrogate' for Daffy or Sylvester he seemed to lose his character and become less sympathetic.
It was still nice to get a Porky short for once though. A shame, I heard they were gonna make some Porky vs Daffy cartoons and even reuse Petunia.
Actually, the reason why Bob didn't voice Porky except for Back in Action is understandable. The original cartoons thought up by this idiot were inapropriate and against what the Looney Tunes did previously (probably adult humor, not sure), and Bob hated these cartoons. Originally, he actually quit, but was also fired at the same time. Luckily the old cartoons and the idiot were both shelved, but apparently Bob didn't find out until after these were done, so he only did Porky's movie lines.
@Bodnoirbabe -- A big fat pig, who else?
Well, at least this time Porky's daughter is species-appropriate. In "Gold Diggers of '49" he had a cat for a child.
The background design is very reminiscent of another Povenmire show, PHINEAS AND FERB.
