A better start for the new season would have been New Orleans' Slewfoot singing his dirge for a little bird that died in front of his eyes "all covered in black" during the BP oil disaster. Slew was a great songwriter and active member of St. Joseph's in Treme before he passed away, leaving behind some great (albeit non-"jazz") music.
