No one quite knows the exact count of how many were made. Some speculate 100, others higher. I haven't seen an accurate number. There was an original run and a rerelease, as far as I know, and the rereleased boxes weren't numbered.
As for the value, any 50 note movement is liable to cost $300-400, not counting the box. Add the Final Fantasy collectors value and $1000 or more really isn't that high. Music boxes aren't cheap, especially when they get above 18 or 30 notes.

It was about 5 years ago when I found it, I bought this from ffmerchandises, I don't remember how much I gave for It. But I didn´t care either, all I could think about was this music box so I bought it ;) It´s priceless and will allways hold a dear place in my heart!
I'll trade my 1/1000 limited edition Super Mario Bros Jacket and $300 for that. I WANT THIS SOOO BAD. :(
