Right... im a huge henry armstrong fan. in his day he was the brilliant, he was on another level. BUT! With the Dramatic improvement of sports science and all its fields, there is simply no way the fighters of the previous generation can compete with those of today. Find me a single sport where the standard has dropped in the last 40 years in the olympics. Answer: there isnt one. 90% of records are broken every 10 years. Longest running is womens high jump from 87. Debate over.
Funny hows there "manny vs henry" talk. The thing about this is that we will never know for sure! I think Manny has to be the underdog in this one. I been readin lots of comments on how Manny is a bum and all. Manny is some what like henry they both pushes the law of logics. But henry is just a freak of mature! But just dont count manny out but i dont see him winin this fight! No way!
If I could take two fighters from any era and put them together, I'd make a fight between Armstrong and Robert Duran. That would be a brawl for the ages.
Armstrong made 19 ww title defenses alone (183 total fights), Pacquaio has had all of 6 fights total as a jww, ww, jmw, it's absurd to even try to compare the body of work between the two especially to people who obviously have no idea what they are looking at.
And the thing is I actually like Pacquaio, he's my favorite active boxer. It's his delusional fans who over estimate and inflate his actual abilities relative to guys like Robinson, Leonard, etc. that I could do without.
Having said that, Armstrongs would beat Pacquaio's body and if he can get to Pacquiao's body continuously Pacquaio would soon slow down. In the era of 15 rounds, Pacquaio would be tested to the limit, and so would Armstrong be.
Pacquaio can't beat this guy? Armstrong leads with his head and buries it at the chest of his opponent. Before he can get to bury his head into Pacquiao's chest he'd have been hit with right hooks, although his bob and weave would be tricky for Pacquaio to deal with. Pacquaio's twists and pivots would have given Armstrong fits. Besides, with his head always lowered down he will be susceptible to Pacquaio's short left hook that has knocked down Lucero, Diaz and Marquez.
That's obviously no fantastic record but against him... its like the credit I give lamotta for being 1-5 vs ray robinson... at least he beat him, that's nothing to sneeze at if he is, as you seem to think, the goat... I guess that makes morales pretty damn fantastic since he was arguably at the tail end, and possibly a little past his prime...
Oh and I'm not sure how marquez and morales came up "empty handed" against manny. They are 1-3-1 against him and many experts feel jmm won at least one, if not both fights. He won more rounds in both (check the cards). In any case, though, not all boxing experts rank him in front of floyd, the ring does, boxrec doesn't. Well never know till they fight, but... I'm not sure floyd is chicken, he just wants to make sure manny isn't cheating, which if he's got nothing to hide should be no problem
Joe frazier beat ali (I think ppl who say manny or floyd are better are just ignorant, they just don't understand, but they understand muhammad ali right? Ali... who only wished he was srr is far better than manny or floyd, and joe frazier, who only wishes he was henry armstrong beat ali using armstrongs style... therefore, to say b/c of his style he would lose in the modern era is laughable, I used to be you... I thought manny was ther goat too, then I learned about boxing, hope u do too
At jww, ww, and jmw both Pacquiao and Mayweather have a grand total of 16 fights. At those same weights Robinson had a record of 120-1-2. Armstrong 52-9-3 and he was over the hill for much of this stretch. It's ludicrous to even try to compare the body of work or quality of opposition. That a 39 year old Shane Mosely is still a top contender just shows how watered down and pathetic the overall quality of boxing has become.
@Johnl1800 ur right in my opinion boxing now is all about money and flash with champions hardly ever fighting way i see it, it seems like we need a guy who is a great fighter with all the traits that theses guys had chin, heart passion for the sport and the fact that they wouldnt mind fighting for the same amount of money that you would get working a 9 to 5 job as long as they can fight the best fighters and win titles
I have to laugh when I see people trying to compare Pacquiao to guys like Robinson and Armstrong. I like the Pacquiao but he's a good fighter who looks like a god because he's beating up guys who would have been what they used to call "clubfighters" back in the old days. To put things in perspective, Hearns would have done to Pacquiao what he did to Hatton. Stylistically neither he or Mayweather have anything to beat Hearns with let alone guys like Robinson, Armstrong, Leonard etc.
It's painful how ignorant of boxing most of the people posting on here are. I'd be willing to bet that the "experts" here criticizing Armstrong, Robinson etc. wouldn't be able to coherently articulate even the most basic of boxing techniques let alone be able to recognize them on film. Especially old footage that is often of less then great clarity.
I doubt Manny could beat either of the Sugar Rays realistically; but Henry Armstrong? I think he would K.O him brutally. He's style is Tailor fit for Pacquiao. Henry would come in there and try to slug it out, but he's not as fast or hits as hard. Armstrong couldn't even defeat Ceferino Garcia clearly, in their two fights and Pacquiao is leap and bounds greater than Garcia.
Sugar Ray Robinson is not as good as what the nostalgic fans portray him to be. Nostalgic boxing fans are the ones who cherish the past glory of boxing historical figures. They love to resurrect dead people and put them against the present boxers like Pacquiao and would gladly embrace that the dead people can never be beaten. It's almost the same as the Floydiots who claim chicken floyd can never lose to Pacquiao while the chicken retires from boxing. Of course they can never lose outside boxing
I love Armstrong, but he takes way too many punches to beat a lightning power puncher like Manny. I do think he has the right pressure style to have beaten Mayweather though.
@strategery101 I agree with you. I don't know what these people see with Henry Armstrong's style. He's too open for Pacquiao and Pacquiao will circle Armstrong like a little kid. I even think Mayweather who's a coward can beat Armstrong easily by points.
@fdincorp Boxers of today are no match to Henry Armstrong, Sugar Ray Robinson etc. Remember their was only one champion in each weight class. No catch weights, and they fought on a daily basis. Cant compare todays fighters with these legends. There may be some acceptions.
@CombatSportstalk Your presupposition is so bogus. Boxers of the past has no match for boxers of today for the fact that the past boxers could not study how the future boxers perform. Besides, physical conditioning of a boxer is perfected to a science today far better. Show me where all the past boxers show a lightning speed combination the way Pacquiao does? If they were alive today, they'd never think that such combination is possible. It's a 3 - 5 punch combination within a mere second.
@CombatSportstalk Sugar Ray Robinson was a wallop puncher just like Mosley (though from time to time, they do throw a straight punch). This means the force is coming from the outside like a letter C or a curve. Pacquiao punches you with straight handed combination. Remember, the shortest distance between 2 points is a straight line and not a curve. That's why Pacquiao's combination is way faster and way stronger than Robinson. No way Robinson can win against Pacquiao. It'd be a good fight though
@CombatSportstalk Pacquiao's loss to Morales was done at lighter weight and that was 13 fights ago. This is the problem of Pacquiao's opponents using the Morales and Marquez blueprint to study Pacquiao. They ended up empty handed didn't they? It's because Pacquiao has evolved into an entirely different machine since then. Let's assume that Robinson had the punching power advantage than Pacquiao, the factor will be their defense. Robinson is just a perfect target for Pacquiao.
@CombatSportstalk Since Pacquiao has a better defense than Robinson, the remaining factor would be their power. Nostalgic boxing fans would say Robinson had more knock outs than Pacquiao. Of course, when a boxer is wearing a gardeners gloves with almost no padding, can't you see what kind of gloves the old boxers used to wear? And look at Robinson's opponents also. Probably more than half of them don't know anything about boxing but used it as a part time job.
@fdincorp ur an idiot robinson beat gene fullmer, carmen basilio, kid gavilan, they are better than all pacroids opponents you fucking retard you got owned pactard...oh yea and tell ur idol pacroid to fight guys at there best weight and not CATWEIGHT okay pactard
@fdincorp You really can't compare Sugar Ray Robinson to anyone within the past like 20 years. SRR is pretty much considered the perfect boxer. Stamina, Chin, Agility, Punching Power, Combination throwing. It's hard to find good footage of him because he never was the same after he killed a guy in the ring, so there aren't many videos. But I think the fact that in his first 123 fights, he only lost once to LaMotta, and proceeded to beat LaMotta 5 times after.
@fdincorp Mayweather may be a coward, but on a technical level he's STILL better than pac. Aside from that, what people see in armstrong's style is what defines a pressure/swarmer fighter. This style is what made people like joe frazier and mike tyson. And you can't compare different eras so easily. These guys had to fight for 15 rounds, so of course theyre pacing themselves differently.
@thecombatcow If your statement is true that Mayweather is better than Pacquiao, why is it that Pacquiao is # 1 and chichken floyd is not? Are you better than all those professional boxing analysts and boxing writers who follows boxing all their lives? If chicken floyd is better, why did he refuse to fight Pacquiao according to the NSAC rules of which he fought all his 40 fights?
Armstrong style was only good for his days and not today's boxing. If he was in his prime today. That's a fact.
@fdincorp i said Mayweather is better on the TECHNICAL aspect. He has the best boxing skills in the game today, no question. That doesn't mean hes BETTER as a complete fighter, Pacquaio might have a better chin, more heart, better power, but on the technical skill aspect, Mayweather is better. We can't compare eras like this because there's too many variables. Would armstrong adapt? Would he receive training like todays? Would he get ridiculous rest periods and training regiments like today?

fuck im sick of hearing about pacquiao he'd get killed fighting in the 30's and 40's those guys fought with heart and almost every 2 weeks the fights now take that fuckin long to happen its not funny
he's just like joe frazier...ducks then hooks right to left...that's their style during those days...thats a legend well. but it is the pacman now overtaking his legacy...i wonder whose going to be the next manny pacman in the future?

Henry Armstrong reserves the right to be one of the greatest, but let's face it he's no match for the PAC if they both live at the same time. the Pacman is way too fast for Henry.
@neovitae12 Looking back on that comment it was a bit rash to say never but put Pacquiao under the same conditions that Armstrong fought under, fighting up to 30 times a year, many of them wars, I would guaruntee he would lose more than he does nowadays and would be at a distinct disadvantage to Armstrong, same could be said in the reverse of that situation but truth is we'll never know.
@West91491 That's a good point but I agree with your original comment. Armstrong would have put such a hurt on Pacquiao that it'd make his first fight w/Erik Morales seem like a dance. I rate Armstrong the second greatest fighter of all time behind SRR. All these blow-hard Pacquiao fans...ugh.
P.S. You know who'd have thumped Pacquiao but is hardly ever mentioned? Ike Williams. Talk about a bad dude.
No way Manny or Floyd would even stand a chance against Homicide Hank
in one year Armstrong started out 1937 by winning 22 bouts in a row, 21 by Knockouts
No one is ever gonna come close to that
and Hammerin' Hank also Attributed his astonishing stamina to an abnormal heartbeat. In fact, he stated that it took him over two hours to warm-up for a fifteen round fight.
pretty much meaning he can push more than any other human on that note alone
@Internetpolice666 your right about one thing.................. that pacquiao is quicker but you would be surprised to know that henry did have very underated defense you cant see it but he isnt actually getting hit alot. then toss in the fact that he is a harder puncher than pac, equally as skilled, 10 times as tough pacquiao couldnt take a quarter of the punches hank can and then the fact that armstrong has 20 times the stamina that pac has. pac would fold under the pace that hank set

@mhagler91491 Armstrong is too slow... Pacquaio can beat his ass off in the early rounds.
