The Detroit Red wings where in the 1997 Cup and the 1998 Cup. In 97 they swept the Philedelphia Flyers and in 98 they swept the Washington Capitals. In that time period we saw a good rivalry against the Colorado Avelanch with the big brawl and the time period of the best hockey the Red Wings ever played, and one of the best coaches who ever lived, Scotty Bowman. After the 97 cup Vladdy got in a car accident and never played hockey again. He inspired hockey town and made them win it again in 1998

I was 6 years old when we won this, I remember my parents wouldn't let me stay up that late, and I was mad. They recorded it on our VCR and I watched it next morning and went nuts. That was the greatest feeling in the world as a little kid.

I grew up in Detroit, seen them play at Olympia, and was at the first game ever at the Joe. We paid $250 a ticket, and had great seats. I remember walking into the stadium and telling my dad, "this will be the best $250 I ever spent, or the worst." Seeing them win the cup with with my dad was priceless.

In general, ALL hockey fans are classy. We may bitch about the attention Crosby gets, even though he's never asked for it. We may bitch about the fun Ovechkin has, yet beg for athletes to show they are having fun. But in my experience, hockey players and fans know to "leave it on the ice" and honor those who truly deserve it. That's why I love our sport moreso than basketball, where someone can be out for weeks with an ingrown toenail.

@Stridh93 He is Vladimir Konstantinov. He was on the team for the '97 season. A couple of weeks after the win, he was riding in a limo with another player and one of the wings trainer. The limo driver was drunk and driving on a suspended license. He crashed into a tree. Vladdy was in a coma for a couple weeks. He has major head trauma and is paralyzed. The '97 cup win was the last game he ever played.
