LA Stupida, Canary Sills, Scooping Gruberova, Lardserrat Fatallé, Netrebwhore, Gargleghiu, Phlegming, Crazyssey and all the rest wish they could have this note in thir vocal chords. Tebaldi only in her most wild dream could of sung this.
@ma34xl typical rabid Callas fan, resorting to personal insults towards other singers to justify your beliefs despite the reality that your ears tell you!
@ubedajils Thank you Arbus2 and ubedajils for pointing this out. I had to listen to it more than 10 times but I finally heard him and though he is late, he is wonderful. As for Callas...the chorus was obliterated but there is a kind of happiness in this destruction.
TheMr Maz, you are right. Only one note!! It tells me much more than whole arias sung by other sopranos. She was really giant!! God bless you dear MARIA ! ASSOLUTA E DIVINA!!
i prefer to say that she knew what she had[the best voice EVER, period] and wasn't afraid to use it as much as she wanted. she performed and changed lives with every role. people wept openly at her shows..and this was a common thing. if one could do that for her "public", why not do it as often as you please. all this talk about premature voice death is for those who can't enjoy what she gave us: OPERAatITSabsoluteBEST. whatavoice!!
Sometimes I don't like Callas. I think she screams and should be put down, yet, there are times like today when I realise she gave more to the THEATRE that is opera than any other singer. Her sense of drama in music is stupendous. Brava La Callas
One note...all it took was ONE NOTE (and WHAT a note it was too!!) for her to STAMP her authority on the whole situation!!I can think of not ONE soprano that could/can do even a fraction of a FRACTION of anything Maria did during her career!!I guess that is why we are still holding her aloft as one of the primary 'saviours' of opera (or at the very least one who extended the life of opera as we know it!!)Viva la Callas...prima donna ASSOLUTA!!!!
@thomastmwc That cabaletta was discovered after 1960 by Richard Bonyge, long after Maria had stopped singing I Puritani. Needless to say, Sutherland was the first soprano to perform that in a long time. :)
What must it have been like to witness this live? Absolutely thrilling, nothing less! I like how Callas shows up at the end, almost like if to tell the audience, "OK, raise your right hand for the benediction...here it comes...cha-CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!" Thanks for posting this amazing clip.
See, here is where the Divine Voice makes its appearance.. going above all the rest of the singers & orchestra. The note was stable fresh & penetrating. How Glorious !! Much to the contrary of Joan "ms. potato head" Sutherland & Anna "I gargle mouthwash while I sing" Netrebko ~ those two poor ladies are tired, pressed & they cackle up the ladder trying to reach a WISP of what the Divine Callas was. Ch' 2 bad Maria Callas was & always will be " LA DIVINA" ;) .. p.s. Netrebko has no chin :)..
What nonsense, Sutherland used to do just that all the time, and much better. You clearly haven't listened to her live recordings of Puritani or Sonnambula or even Beatrice di Tenda, otherwise you wouldn't make such silly comments... I'm sorry but Callas's note here is just horrible... Yelp yelp yelp!!!
Not only is the note FORTISSIMO! like ubedajils mentions at the end of video but HUGE! just listen to that reception from the audience at the end. So don't hate (appreciate) because maybe in youre after life you will be able to hit a note like that:>)
I have heard her hit them, but it was rare, and yes she did do a lot of runs and trills.. these were like vocalizing for sutherland.. and made it easier.. It bugged the hell out of me, but still she is a great singer.
You know I have listened to this five times now. I can't believe it! Where the hell does she get off hitting such a strong D right at the very top...no gliding or swooping or anything. True bel canto and probably dangerous to replicate.
She never sing the aria "Oh! Sento o mio bell'angelo". Trust in me, in 1952 for Callas nothig was difficult. Listen her singing Lucia, i.e., and you'll see that I have reason.
The aria ends with that high D, so that's the reason. In my opinion the aria is good but I don't miss it in this recording. I've heard all the opera before and I have enough good feelings haha. Thanks for your opinion.
Well, I guess that's a bit of a lie, with Maria singing it 10 years before Joan did. But then again, maybe Richard found it for Maria?????? Probably not.
The Voice of the Divine !! Its glorious force !! Truly worthy of echoing forever through the fibers of musical time !! If only Maria were still alive today .. how lucky the artistic world would be to have this legend of radiance alive still. !! Bravo !!

When Callas begin the high D, another voice, probably Di Stefano (or maybe one bariton) sing another D, but one scala below, not a High D for tenor.
