Weezer may have a slightly different sound, and sometimes experimental styles, but the fact still remains that the music is good, if not GREAT. I generally love all of Weezer's stuff (not necessarily every song, but most of the songs from each album they've put out).

When you listen to the weezer material in chronological order you can get a good idea of what happens to any artist who's ego gradually gets bigger than their art. The artists never lose their skills. Rivers can still write effective songs... but they're less and less artistic. This example is indeed a well written song. but it is so generic any band could have written it.

People who don't like Weezer simply don't understand not only the natural progression of any band, but also the adherence to different influences.

Raditude will be a great throwback to the bubblegum pop of the 70s.

This is regression. Progression is when the music may fall out of taste of former fans, but is still a step forward in advancement. The new albums (especially the Red Album) have added nothing more advanced to weezer's playing or songwriting. Some bands, people refuse to appreciate after the first couple albums. In Weezer's case, it was deserved.

on another note though, these new songs do seem to be more honest (if shallow) than anything we've seen in a long time. There's hope.

The problem most people have are the non metaphorical lyrics and the lack of guitar solos. But if you want to look back in music history, take a look at Prince's Lovesexy. People hated it back then because it was simple and sounded cheap. Now we love it because we understand it better. I'm sure a few years down the road we'll love Raditude.
