And jcl5m used this technic almost 4 years ago. Not using face tracking though, but Nintendo Wii IR for head tracking on PC, still producing the exactly same effect.
@Mornys That's true, but the impressive part of this is the increased accuracy speed and lightness required by the phones limited processing power, resolution and the fact that this is done using visible light, which in this case is far less accurate than IR
When your head is too much to the sides it looks like the image on screen isn't being distorted correctly, it looks flat; i think it's not jsut a matter of moving the camera, but also applying a different projection in order to have it look correct at more extreme angles.
btw, does it tracks the head in 3D, like can you move your head so an object in the virtual environment is behind your head?
@RAEHL1983 With head tracking, A well researched topic for which already standard libraries exist. Basically the camera sees the pattern of your face/head and from its size and position in this case an estimate of the spacial relation to the users head is derived. Depending on lighting conditions, camera quality and cpu power (calculating more iterations is good to eliminate mistakes) it can work very well.

@ctepchik the ipad 1 doesn't have a front facing camera, so it couldn't. it used the accelerometer instead i guess. but that's not the same..

Very nice, I saw once someone doing this to distort (or fix) the image of a person in a video call, and the result seemed very interesting.
