  • I just came back from Detroit, where I visited the Motown museum. It's so sad to see Smokey's reaction to Sam's death; Smokey a bonafied singing and songwriting legend, expressing true sadness over the loss of another singing and songwriting legend...it kind of made me tear up...

  • There was a NPR production "The Gospel Truth" does anyone know where I might purchase a copy of this production.

  • he was so good looking with a cute smile.

  • Thanks so much! This was definitely long overdue!

  • Nice to see the BBC's Harry Carpenter halfway through that clip.

He died earlier this year, I'm sure he's up there with Sam now. :)

  • The melodic tones and singing voice of Sam Cooke were unique. I adore his music.

God always be with you Sam Cooke

  • whats the song at 2:42

  • @1718lafayette You've probably found it by now, but just incase you haven't - 'Pilgrim of Sorrow'

  • he is definetley seeing sam coke now with micheal jackon, james brown

  • Sam Cooke is my favorite artist. I love his gospel and secular music. We need to put more of his music out there for the younger kids and they should release videos that we have never seen of Sam Cooke. Denzel should play Sam in a movie of his life story

  • the song in start? does somebody know that new :)?

  • He's So Wonderful

  • Actually, the song it titled 'Wonderful.' It was recorded in 1956 when he was a member of The Soul Stirrers.

  • Sam Cooke is the best pure singer of all time. There will never be a man that can sing like that. The one and only true man of soul!!!

  • @journeyvail I have ti disagree. I think it's Marvin Gaye.

  • Now you know just how brilliant of THE ARTIST Sam Cooke was/is by just hearin the heartfelt griefs of Smokey Robinson and James Brown. When artists of their caliber embrace Sam's undyin legacy... how can we not? Sam Cooke was indeed "The Inventor of Soul", but there was also anotha thing he spear-headed as well... that Afro-centric pride that eluded us since arrival here, that conscientious music that would inspire countless legends like Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass, & Johnnie Taylor. RIP Sam.

  • Hey, John... This looks GREAT! Congratulations...

Footage of Cooke and "Cassius Clay" is a real "find".,,,

    Best, Don

  • Congrats John! You never gave up and I am thrilled your film is finally seeing the light of day thanks to your perseverance and American Masters. Sadly, like my McCullers film, far too many have passed on before seeing your work. Hard to believe it was ten years ago when we met at Iffcon!

  • I love great artists

  • Oh I can't wait for this! Sam Cooke's voice is one of the great wonders of our musical heritage.

  • The great of voices of any one heritage become greater when they cross over with ease. THAT, my friend, is America. Imagine had Sam chosen to remain solely in gospel. That would have been all well and good but it would have have limited his legacy and influence on music in general. Then again he might have still been with us.

  • We'll miss him <3
