  • anyone seeing him in minneapolis soon?

  • haha hhey reminder Jeff Mangum's brain works the same way musically as Green Day's. Their brains are very similar. hahaahhahaha

  • JEGG MANGUM IS DEAD AND bill joe is ALIVE. PROVE OF BESTER SONG

  • @BeavisRevolution nice spelling

  • I have this on "Invent Yourself a Shortcake,", but it sounds like shit. Where can I find this version?

  • @Tunnelzzzzz From what I can find, this version is from a live performance at Aquarius Records in San Francisco, July 4th 1996.

  • @userofdoom Oh yes, I have that live record (I actually have all the live performances by NMH since '91), but I realised that was the version i was looking for just 1 minute after posting that comment :)

    thank you, btw

  • How the fuck could Jeff Magnum rip off Green Day. Jesus Christ please make logical assumptions.

  • Hey Green Day fans -- this song came out in 1991. Dookie was released in 1993. I know you all were listening to Dookie back when you played with Pogs, and you didn't hear anything by Neutral Milk Hotel until your freshman year in college when you were trying to broaden your musical taste in hopes of scoring with that hot indie chick in residence who didn't think you were cool enough, but that doesn't mean there's any way Jeff Mangum could have heard a song that hadn't come out yet.

  • @TheWerewolfJesus Damn son!

  • HOLY SHIT NIGGA THATS INDY.

  • moo moo

  • For some reason, some of the chord progressions remind me of "Where is My Mind" by the Pixies... weird right?

  • OMG!! Mangum is ripping of Green Day!!...bitch please.

  • Fuck /mu/.

  • Thanks so much for uploading, I've been searching for this song everywhere

  • From what year is this?

  • wow look at all these butthurt hipsters. haha fucking pretentious pricks.

  • @yeashow123 stop labeling people you cunt.

  • Comment removed

  • Sounds like "When I come around"

  • @Alonb64 definitely the same chord progression, just down a half step I think. Even though the chords are the same though, the songs are totally different. And both amazing btw.

  • @pearljammer13

A whole step down, actually. This song is in the key of E, while "When I come around" is in F#.

  • You people are ridiculous... If you don’t like it, you don’t like it. If you do, you do. Calm down.

  • I love this song so much.

  • @yeashow123 I love NMH and wouldn't consider myself a hipster. I like Foster The People, Coldplay, Guster, and just a bit of Justin Bieber, too.

  • @yeashow123 I don't like this either? But you are just fucking wrong. On all levels. haha. You honestly feel bad about being all those things, so you bash it on unrelated videos on Youtube of all things. How did you even get here? I came from Exotic Animal Petting Zoo. You probably just finished listening to Chelsea Grin or some shit.

  • @yeashow123 You mad?

  • @yeashow123 You are an enormous asshole, I hope you die old and alone.

  • @yeashow123 shut your mouth before i fuck it

  • Well great, now i have to search for luucs21's comment. I love these adventures.

    -sigh of frustration-

  • @PacmanNathan1 dude it is on page2

  • is nobody else reminded of the great Syd Barrett when they listen to this guy?

  • @Roronoa79 Thank you. I've been saying this all along. I definitely can hear a lot of Barrett in Mangum. They definitely share similar sensibilities among other things.

  • @zweiosterei I don't necassarily hear Syd in Jeff's music and I know what you mean, but I know that Jeff likes him, and it's pretty funny (ironically, I guess) in one video Jeff says "Syd's God" and Syd got all fucked up and sorta disappeared and Jeff Kinda did the same thing.

  • This is brilliant! I haven't heard any NMH that's not from In The Aeroplane Over The Sea... now I feel like an idiot for not looking for it before.

  • How can anyone think Jeff magnum was not incredibly innovative in his singing style? He has a voice that, sure takes some getting used to, but its so incredibly powerful. If you can't respect that then you don't understand music. Even if you don't like his music you have to appreciate his talent.

  • @leisurelydinner R tard

  • @leisurelydinner you're just so wrong. like everyone is entitled to their own opinion and all that bullshit but it's hard to imagine not loving this music.

  • @luucs21 Correction. "is song of *Neutral Milk Hotel Band

Neutral Milk Hotel - My Dream Girl Don't Exist" I thought something like that might be obvious because the songs are completely different besides the chord progression, which by the way, isn't exactly the hardest to write.

  • @luucs21 This came out years before that, and if you bash Jeff Mangum i will shove your head into a furnace

  • i truly love this song.

  • 0:56 is when the singing starts

  • @thychaos its a song by the brianjonestown massacre, you fucking retarded child

  • @VictorC53 lol and? whats your point? i dont care if it was written by god, it sucks. uh oh, i think we have an angry fanboy here.

  • @thychaos im just saying, your arrogance overwhelming you know?

  • @VictorC53 my arrogance overwhelming?

  • green day? what is wrong with you people? when jeff mangum masturbates several thousand billy joe armstrongs come out and die on a tissue.

  • @EvaNatal They dont even have time to sell out...

  • Comment removed

  • @Underhill182 I think you messed up. But lemme guess: you were trying to link to Axis of Awesome.

  • Apparently I did. Yeah, I really hate people who think its bad to use other people's ideas in your own songs.

  • @Underhill182 I agree wholeheartedly.

  • Comment removed

  • @thychaos Incorrect. Every artist is presumably ripping off someone else in some way. There are no rules for this stuff anymore. That was established last century by jazz artists and the likes of John Cage. Its just taking legislation a while to keep up.

  • @Underhill182 nah, youre wrong. all music is influenced by something else, but theres a difference between being influnced by them (or hell, even playing the same style as them) and blatantly taking a part from a song they wrote and putting it into yours.

  • @thychaos Art has moved on a long way from the days of 'you cant copy my idea'. Post-modernist thinking was adopted into jazz at some point, and it became considered acceptable for artists to take existing musical themes and elaborate upon or change them in any way without giving specific credit to the original piece (except for when archaic copyright infringement laws forced them to). Blatantly taking parts from other people's art has now become standard artistic practice.

  • @Underhill182 yeah, to elaborate and do their own take on a theme is ok. im talking about hearing something in someone elses song, and taking that exact riff or vocal line and putting it in yours. youre retarded if you think thats ok. originality makes music better. when i hear a song with an exact riff or vocal line thats been done 1000 times over, its hard for me to appreciate it. music would get boring.

  • @thychaos I'm not retarded for thinking thats ok. I could name a huge list of songs (particularly in pop and dance music) that use samples of pre existing vocal lines, as well as many many jazz tracks that use pre existing themes, basslines, drumbeats etc. Deep Purple used a Blues Magoos riff, Jimi Hendrix used The Leaves lyrics, John McLaughlin copied Sly And The Family Stone, Coldplay accidentally ripped off Joe Satriani. For a long time, 'intellectual property' laws have served no purpose.

  • Jesus fuck. i've been a Mangum fan for years now and never heard this before

  • Why is it the best artists like Jeff make so few albums?

  • His voice... its so... [insert synonym of amazing here]

  • love how he explains himself in the beginning

  • Stop all the arguments, this uses the same chord progression as the "4 chord song", so it sounds like 1000s of songs

  • @RhydianTJ True. But it DOES sound good.

  • this does sound a awful like a certain greenday song... not sure which one though

  • @risquebicycle When I Come Around

  • @risquebicycle Ur dumb

  • This is so amazing I'm crying.

  • YOU SHUT YOUR WHORE MOUTH WHILE JEFF MANGUM IS SINGING

  • @fateater77777 you just make yourself look like a fanboy faggot when you leave comments like this.

  • better then being a regular fag, dick gobbler

  • @fateater77777 so, being a faggot, in addition to being a fanboy, is better than being just a faggot? your logic is flawed and it shows how dumb you are. no wonder youre a fanboy. youre a naive child who likes to hop on his heroes cocks.

  • yep

  • @fateater77777 wow. so you are a faggot, a fanboy, AND a retard. get some help, lil guy. you need it.

  • @thychaos You seem to be taking the internet and this song way too seriously...

  • @Cruciferian green day copied NMH

  • @Cruciferian Your retarded

  • I'm a 90 year old man and I like this! May we bow before your blackened essence!

  • new favorite band :)

  • @1995sterling same. my friend showed me this band the other night and was saying how jelous he was that i am hearing it for the first time

  • on every NMH song on youtube there is just so much hate. just chill and listen :)

  • bomb the music industry is the new neutral milk hotel

  • Jeff wrote down his world and In The Aeroplane Over The Sea was all of his best work compiled into one album. That being said, if you're listening to this expecting crazy guitar solos or blink182 highschool pizza-delivery boy lyrics, then try to listen to In The Aeroplane like you would read Harry Potter or LoTR.

    Prepare your mountaintops~

  • who else found out about NMH from Will Grayson Will Grayson?

  • @muffincheesepie Yes! Awesome book, too.

  • Guess what people? Nobody really cares what kind of music you like. Even if they ask... they're just waiting to tell you what kind of music THEY'RE into. So let's just do eachother all a favor and stop asking, stop telling, HEY we should just stop speaking all together... Sound good? Just SHUT up and listen to whatever music you freaking WANT to.. and be quiet about it. Music = for listening. Dinner table= no religion, politics, or music talk.

  • @xXxlolomgwtfxXx cool story bro

  • @xXxlolomgwtfxXx you shut up, your totally talking out your ass man. who cares if people talk about the music they like. doesn't cause anyone harm. you could be arguing over something more important.....

  • @xXxlolomgwtfxXx lol another peacemaker faggot who thinks hes going to end all arguments. shut the fuck up, child.

  • NMH is one of the most pretentious hipster bands around. if anyone mentions they like them i know they suck ass.

  • Neutral Milk Hotel is the music of love. Sadly, I've found out that people who don't appreciate NMH have yet to find how deep love can actually run. I'm not saying true love is right for everybody, in fact I'm pretty sure it ruins some people. But if the kind of love that comes from your very core, the kind of love where'd you throw away your entire being to make some one happy, the kind of love that leaves a hole in your heart when it's gone had a soundtrack, Jeff Mangum would be the producer.

  • @bluecrimson420 thats an amazing quote man i love it

  • @bluecrimson420 i love what you had to say.

  • Yeah, I figured eventually the "GREEN DAY SUX NMH IS COOLER" comment would get more popular than mine. Because, you know, music is a pissing contest.

  • i love this song, esp, knowing it's a prelude to 'ghost'.

  • When I first saw /mu/ bitching on about NMH I thought they were serious.. Then I thought they were being sarcastic. Now that I have seen it for myself I don't know what to think... The entire album reeks of mediocrity, not a single thing special about it as far as I can see.

  • @bowenjuice

ya i figured /mu/ was trolling after i listened to a song or two and was like

    This is garbage

    this song is garbage

    Dirty Projectors is LIFE!!!!

  • Well, this was incredibly average.

  • I like green day and neutral milk hotel, both wonderful bands in my opinion, oh well, what does my say matter anyway?

  • Anne Frank is Jeff Magnum's Waifu.

  • I think he fell in love with Ann Frank. Kinda beautiful in a way

  • haha im no hipster, but i seem to always like all these bands more, but because i was raised on different kinds of music. i wish people would atleast know of these bands, cant ask them to like it, but i dont really care ha, i just listen to whats good for me

  • who is babbling about chord progressions while jeff mangum is playing music

  • Hipsters be mad. Oh no, we ripped of the mainstrem music? It can't be, quick cover the insecurity with denial and green day hate. Yeah we're so cool and indie. haha!

  • @ZaikuZERO For starters, lets calm down a little. Referring to sensible human beings with different music tastes and strong opinions as "mad" is a little harsh; They have their opinion, and you have yours.

Secondly, those fans are simply responding to the original hate was brought over by some Greenday fans when they said this song was ripped off. And don't generalize fans- Just because some of us got angry doesn't mean we all are, same with Greenday fans.

By the way, This song came first......

  • @jacobthelioneater Oh, it came out first? Never mind then, the Green Day kids are just being stupid then. Sorry, I was being a dick. Not a Green Day fan but most NMH fans turn out to be music elitists. Didn't mean to misjudge you guys.

  • @ZaikuZERO I'll admit that the Hipster scene does tend to concentrate near bands of a small fanbase and with certain ecentricites, like Neutral Milk Hotel. They're ruining it for the rest of us. But of course, they'd rather have it that way, so it doesn't become "main stream".

  • @ZaikuZERO GTFO and die

  • I laugh at all these NMH fan boys on here. So a Green Day song sounds similer. Thousands of songs sound the same. The alphabet song and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star; Tik Tok and California girls; Eighties and Come as you Are; Razorblades and Mandy; So Happy I Could Die and Pocket Full of Sunshine.

Songs will sound the same, get over it.

  • @BassAdams6661 i don't think you know what you are saying. neutral milk hotel came before green day none the less that doesn't make green day any better.

  • @gotmonkeys111 actually...

  • I usually dont post comments but, I wanted to clear that up so we can focus on what's important here, This amazing song

  • I've been doing some music theory lately so, I'll try to settle this argument from what i know. Let it Be, When I Come around and this song all use different chords.

What makes them sound so similar is that it is a 1,5,6,4 chord progression(very common)

For example if a song started on A the 1,5,6,4 chord progression would be A,E,Fm, and D.

since the chords in all of these songs are the same intrevals apart they sound very similar.

  • This song makes me cry.

  • this song is beautiful!

  • goddamn. the only thing you guys can think of to do after hearing this song is to argue? really?

  • so everyone keeps saying this chord progression was from green day. nobody seemed to mention..hmm..lets see.. the beatles? let it be. same chords. i think its a more respectible comparison.

  • @wafflehouseco Every pop song ever is based off of the same chords.

Nobody complains about it, let alone argue about it.

    Shut the fuck up.

  • @ThraxxNecro AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • @wafflehouseco Let it Be was C G Am F, this is D A Bm G.

  • @Uzzie101 yeah its the same. I V vi IV. its just in a different key. but im done with this whole thing. i just wanted to say that when i come around isnt the only song in the whole world with the progression.

  • @Uzzie101

    This is E B C#m A but yea

  • @tman2tuff really? fair enough

  • Any Green Day or NMH fanbous/girls need to google the chords D A Bm G. There's 1000s of songs with this progression.

  • green day whiners need to shut up and fuck off.

how did trendfags even find this band?

  • How about I love neutral milk hotel and green day. So I'm a happy camper :)

  • fuck, that was wonderful

  • ...though most of it isn't undeserved.

  • i just wanna say, i love you, Europeans. but you do just as much, if not more, bashing on (North) Americans.

  • Another YouTube comment fight... I love you silly kids who have nothing better to do then fight about music on the internet.<3

  • Comment removed

  • lol [;

  • @iljurcough dude dont bash europeans. Im american but even i can realize that most europeans are better than us.

  • @stevosmusic hahahahaha

  • Stephen Colfuckingbear got me stuck on Neutral Milk Hotel.

  • look this was before greenday. this chord progression has it's own wiki page. wiki search "pop punk chord progression"

  • It would have been fine if he hadn't picked so many words that rhymed with "around" for the intro.

  • WHEN I COME AROUNNDDDD

  • Are people seriously comparing Neutral Milk Hotel to Green Day?

  • @thefrenzee feelsgoodman

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!

  • This chord progression is used by hundreds of bands. If you listen to comedy band "The axis of Awesome" they explain this in they're song 4 chords.

  • i grabbed my guitar and picked the melody of "when i come around" to this song. (just for the record, i'm more of a nmh fan then a green day fan by far)

  • I love this version the best.

  • i love this, I really do!..well done Jeff!

  • reminicent of a blend of lou reed meets violent femms w a touch of bob marley guitar riffs- ish kinda of sort of

  • You could go to almost any coffee house in a big city on a Saturday night and hear some guy or girl banging out something they wrote that is as "good" or better than this song. And no one but the friends they brought with them would remember that song two minutes after it ended. In fact, most of the folks at the coffee house would have zoned out on the tune about 45 seconds in to go back to the conversation they were having with their table mates. (These are just facts, kids.)

  • @termsofusepolice yeah its a shame that some people don't get the recognition that they deserve... however its not truly your place to determine if somethings "good" or better than anything else, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder ; )

  • The very end of the song is from their song "Ghost."

  • @AwesomeSauceMr

    Don't you mean "his" song?

  • @Menegoth Yeah, it was 2-3 in the morning when I commented.

  • @lalilul3l0 LOL

  • Many songs sound a lot alike or use the same chords for example if you look up 4chordsong by Axis of Awesome, they have many songs that use the same sound/rhythm. Does that mean they ripped eachother off? No.

  • @emzie9559 My girlfriend is jewish. That's one of the reasons I love her. =]

  • @lifeofcrayons

    Because she's Jewish?

    That's weird.

  • Nothings new under the sun ....

  • @Halileet I agree. The emotion is what really matters in the end.

  • Comment removed

  • @nirconn It came out before When I Come Around.

  • my dream guy dont exist

  • @pureecstasy You didn't notice, but he was singing the song to you :)

  • @MrIknowmonkeys yeah huh i can choose to believe so:)

  • its fucking music, stop talking about hipsters..whatever that is

  • They're pretty good, but all their songs are the same.

  • @stevothebear13 That is one thing that I wish could be different about this band....the
