There really is no point in putting on a "concert" when instead it would make sense doing a symposium where one could argue the rationale for utilizing a specific approach over the other. At a concert no one generally brings music paper, pencils, and a list of favourable cadences, thus the weaknesses of doing concerts. Also there is very little discussion between composer and audience member and virtually no opportunity for that audience member to come up on stage and offer a contrasting versio
Steely Dan had a chemistry musicianship and wrote interesting great songs! Every once in a while a band comes out that has a total mojo! Its rare and slipping out of the people. I think bands like EWF, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Beatles etc had it.
Not to be confused with certain arrangements that use musical instruments to promote hair follicle excitement and projecting certain attitudes that have less to do with creating harmonies.
Donald & Walt are some of my favorite song writers, true masters of the craft. They also use this same device of device of 'illuminating' a minor blues progression by inserting Maj 7/9 chords, on the song 'Don't take me Alive" from "The Royal Scam".
A master class in song structure and composition by one of the all time masters/greats/what-have-you, thank you so much for posting this video I learned a lot.
@jlionz Spot on, glad I discovered this series and thanks to hoodooskidoo for posting them. So cool the way the roots, variations and structure are explained along the way as you hear the song come together.
Bernhardt keeps on looking for blues references in the composition. I think this approach is senseless. It is really a SD class synthesis. Unique, superb and difficult to put in words even by its maker.
Wonder why he did this in Dm when on the album it is in Em? Great that he goes through his thinking and nice to hear directly from him but weird that he picked a different key. Nice vid though regardless.
You do realize I am being tongue in cheek. I consider it a great privilege to listen to Walter explain what would otherwise be a mystery to me and business as usual to him/in his mind. Isn't WB and utube grand!?
Notice that the guy with the insane comments is in fact 'tuned in" and listening to the master. Interesting that one with such an elevated perspective would stoop to the depths of mediocrity and waste his/her time tainting their ears with the likes of SD/the man.

i think what you wrote was funny in a way, but I know Donald Fagen to be married to a woman and he is adored by millions as one half of Steely Dan. Do you even know the music of Steely Dan ?

at 3:54 he misspeaks when he says "G major 9 with no 3rd" when he probably meant to say "C major 9 with no 3rd".

@davidmmcg hard to tell. He's mixing time with a lot of signature. Both ended up in the recording and now you've confused the whole thing.
