If you just recorded this in town then its likely that the mic you used isn't sensitive enough to properly pick up a frequency that high, since it takes a fairy high end mics to pick up the extreme ends of the frequency spectrum to an audible level. you should just stick on a tone generator at 18khz and turn it on and off a few times to see if people can hear the difference/the gaps. 16k to 17k is where it starts to tail off with age.

I'm 40 years old and could hear it. It was load enough that when the video ended the sound stopped. Soulded like a high pitch beeeeeeep in my right ear. I have Tinnitus (sp) and still heard it through the load high pitched hums.. There are other noises in the background but the high pitch is heard in the ear not from the speakers.
