  • when i pass mgsx in psone i always cry with this song, in actuality i cry less xd

  • wait a minute, why is this song, which was written by Rika Muranaka {a japanese woman) sung in gaelic?

  • @conspiracyMAN23 but it was translated by a Irish TV personality, Bláithnáid Ní Chofaigh.

  • oohhh,ok-it's gaelic.i see it now

  • i got goosebumps listening to this

  • what language is that? that's not japanese...

  • why is it in irish? being irish i must know

  • @MultiAwesomeness96 Why not? Certainly makes a change from the crappy fiddle-de-dee music people know us for. What a song!

  • 4 people didn't know what "dislike" means!

  • 2:39 sony is a shit in our mouths

  • yeah but what language is this though?

  • @MrSyntheticDesign

    its Irish Gaelic

  • Rika Muranaka the best AAA video game composer

  • 1 of the best I've ever listened. And words....wufff.... pain in my heart.

  • Snake,Liquid,wolf,mantis,naomi,fox,mei ling,roy,meryl,raven,revolver.

Thank you for teaching me how to live.

"You shouldn't allow your self to be chained to fate to be led by your genes. The important thing is that you choose LIFE. And then LIVE"

You dont need a reason to live other than to just live.

There is no end to the impact this game has on me.

It inspired me to get off my fat ass and start trying to lose weight.

Cant believe I just happen to find this game in a box 2 months ago.

  • was this friend irish that you were going to ask?

  • This song is just as beautiful as it was when it struck me about 12 years ago.

  • @SystemofaJake1 I still feel the same way as you about this song ^^

  • thanks very much man

  • Rest In Peace Snake, .. You Fought Well T_T

  • How a fucking song can make me cry ? Maybe because it's remember me the best part of my life, and remember me my second home: Shadow Moses... Liquid Snake, Revolver Ocelot, Sniper Wolf, Decoy Octopus, Vulcan Raven, Psycho Mantis... There won't be so charismatic terrorists again.

  • @Argoxium Actually MGS series are now awfull if u compare with MGS1

  • @22jarlaxle Yep... Hideo Kojima has always done an unbelievable work with MGS series but, he can't make a game as MGS1, it was the best, and it will stay the best one forever. And I think it's too bad for us who are not american: MGS1's dialogues were adapted in french (I'm french) but since MGS2, there was no adaptation anymore =( french voices was awsome

  • Like most people I first heard this song in MGS1. I was browsing some music here and suddenly remembered it. As I listened to it again for the first time in years, I began to cry like a child at my computer. This song is incomprehensibly beautiful.

  • @gregotoole thanks greg for lending your voice, presumably you know more than i do, as i said at some point i have only leaving cert standard Irish. i am aware of the points yo have made and agree that the translation is probably correct, i suppose i just felt that, given that any translation relies significantly on inference, that there may have been a better way to express some of the ideas expressed therein. anyway it was a great excuse to trawl the dictionary and so teach myself a bit more.

  • I am completely overwhelmed by peoples love for this song. I first heard it after playing mgs1. it was so beautiful and still is. I cannot express my appreciation in finding people who love this song as much as i. for all the people working on translations, thank you. this song is always in my heart, thank you all

  • Im really sad about the fact that I keep comming up with different translations for this song, for I want this song to be the song played at my funeral whenever it comes.

My family and friends will not understand but I for one will enjoy and love the beautyful song and the voice.. But I wish I would truely know what it is she sings of.

  • A salute to the soldier who died for her country, A salute to the man who fought out of loyalty to him self. A salute to the wolf who died proud, and a special salute to Mr Kojima, the man who brought us this wonderful series.

  • I saw this in another video, and I wanted to share it in this: in 2:40 the lyrics say "sony is a shit in our mouths"

  • I do not play any games, but years ago I heard this song and was instantly mesmerized. I obtained it from a friend of my son who had the game. I did not need to know Gaelic to understand the absolute beauty of this Japanese/Irish piece of deeply haunting music.

  • I have had games that make me go "OH SHIT. I have had games that make me ho "HELL YEAH!!!" but never have I had a game that impacts me emotionally. Never had I had a game make me cry.

METAL GEAR accomplished that. When ever people ask me why I like games so much I tell them its not for the multiplayer. Its for the experience. An experience that has faded away into the modern generation of gaming. Thats what we think. It lives on through METAL GEAR. Thank you Hideo Kojima. Your the man.

  • this makes me cry i remeber beating the game i was so happy then this played then the wildlife showed to this day i still kinda cry

  • in what language this is preformed ?

  • @queensffanah Irish

  • I have to say...this song helped me get through a rough part of my life...I was in the hospital roughly two and half years ago because I was in a fight and was stabbed in the side piercing my stomach...it was absolutely the most intense pain I've ever felt...The surgeon had to make a rather large incision to repair my internal bleeding...during the month and a half of rehabilitation I had to go through, I would listen to this work of art until it soothed me to sleep...to make a long story short

  • L2.The tormented/sorrowful heart of love? (crá croí- tormented heart)

    L13.Life is wonderful. (saol-life. domhain-world)

    L27.There is beauty in life.

Thats pretty much it. Oh btw, the language is called Irish, 'gaelic' hasnt been used in a while unless refering to the language's history or sports like gaelic football. we call it irish, or when were bothered, gaeilge. sorry, calling it gaelic irritates me a bit. (its a pointless language anyway so idk y we had to learn it.)

    beautiful song.

  • Beautiful! Thanks for translation :)

  • you say you don't speacl Irish but your trasnlsations are so very close, only a few minor ones here and there fair play

  • 642nd person to like this video...Really AWESOME SONG and LYRICS!!!! whenever I listen to this song I alsways I have chill in my spine

  • dudes if you google "the best is yet to come muranaka" the translation is comletely different! WTF??

  • @aksteb412011 Because the song was originally written in Japanese by Rika Muranaka and after the lyrics were written in Japanese they handed it over to Aoife Ní Fhearraigh who translated it to Gaelige and then recorded the song :p

  • Indeed games such as Final Fantasy VII broke the mold and injected similar wonderment into the new gaming experience before this game, but MGS differed in that it played as one of the most interactive gaming cinemas and the games of today owe so very much to this game's model.

  • This game truly set the standard for the cinematic gaming experience, with excellent voice acting and a beautiful, haunting soundtrack, and officially transformed Hideo Kojima into the Steven Spielberg of video games. Snatcher, Policenauts, and the previous Metal Gear games were great, but MGS ushered in and cemented a renaissance in gaming that taught that games can convey a valuable message and be used as a medium for artistic expression rather than a detriment to players' minds. Hail Kojima!

  • My favourite song, from one of my favourite games. There is no words to describe something with this much emotion put in 6 minutes and 20 seconds of music. Good work with the lyrics

  • look at the like/dislike bar. It's all green!

  • this is to be played at my funeral..thank you

  • After all these years why hasn't konami released the actual translation? do they even care the fans want to know? i get better treatment from akumajou dracula. and that's just sad.

  • this is art.

  • Une chanson sublime !!

  • 4 people have no bright future .

  • Is maith loim an amhran seo.

  • can someone tell me in which language this song is?

  • @RifatDraga08 Gaelic Irish

  • Breathtaking

  • Cos mało polskich komentarzy, a utwór jest prześwietny i wżdy winniśmy go chwalić :D

  • I'm crying, there's only the most beautiful song of the most beautiful game ever, which can make me cry like this. NOTHING can make me feel this feeling except this song, it's engraved in my heart.

    For all of you guys:

You who spent your childhood with Solid Snake, rocked by this wonderful song

You who have been influenced by this game like no other

You who would like go back in time just to feel this feeling again

Don't forget that Snake never existed in real, but exists in our hearts.

  • @Argoxium Thats true just because snake isn't real doesn't mean he can't impact you. Especially if your a child i grew up loving snake and these games.

  • Most beautiful thing to come out of ireland since guinness

  • i remember hearing this song for the first time when i Finnish MGS1 with my friend in his house, my goooooooooood it was such a good time.

  • i'm really shedding tears, much more due to the fact of how gaming evolved..... i fear that this game and the series will be forgotten because how gaming has evolved to such shallow games like Call of Duty.... like this is the only game that shows me true emotion of actually killing someone even in a video game.... for example, MGS3 Johny when you were captured, man oh man, i promise myself to never kill that guard in the cell.... thank you so much kojima...

  • It's so hard for me to not be completely enveloped with emotion when I hear this.

  • @WizborgMKII

...having read the translation at JunkerHQ a few more times, i have realised i have a few persistent misgivings about it. I am not convinced of its accuracy, and to answer your question on that forum "Lig leis agus beidh leat" "beidh" is the future tense of the verb "Be".

tell you what, i'll post back here in a week or 2, i'm going to send a copy of this to someone i know who is fluent in the language and i will come back with (i hope) a definitive translation, once and for all!

  • @mactiregealach Looking forward to it.

  • @umbrae12 did he come ever back?

  • The translation is bang on. There are several dialects of Gaelic so the versions vary from region to region and the version taught in schools and universities is a composite of these. Regarding the verb to be (Bhi / Ta / Beidh) it is an irregular verb and can even be used as Yes & No Directly translating Galec to English is almos impossible as they're not from the same root and much of the translation must be inferred.

  • @WizborgMKII

...probably is the elusive accurate translation, the lack of which motivated me to flood this page with my suggestions! so thanks for the link!

translating irish to english is difficult as words can take on different meanings depending on what other words surround them. But, the most important thing is i think, that for each of us who loves this song, we all know what it means to us individually. How it makes us feel, thats what it truly means.

  • @WizborgMKII

Dont mind them, those syllables are definitely there! and i'm 99% sure that they are "crá" and "grá". as i cant think of any other simialar sounding words that would make sense in this context. I am irish and have studied the language for all of school years however i am not fluent. the translation you have provided a link for, is not a word by word literal translation, which is pretty much what i have done here. and for that reason the translation available on JunkerHQ...

  • You mustn't allow yourslef to be chained to fate, to be ruled by your genes, people can choose the type of life they want to live, the important thing is to choose life... and then live!!

  • I wish i spoke Gaelic...

  • Who make's this beautiful song ??

    Please, let someone tells me.

  • Damn, I always wondered what she was singing about.

Its more beautiful than I could have ever imagined.

  • I just found out that it is in Gaelic(right??) and i was stunned...honestly, i think that such an epic game only meets an epic soundtrack most fit once in a million occasions..

  • Makes you think back on a lot of things that happened if you had a rough past.....i think about a lot hearing this song and a rough past....thinking back on the past though is pain sometimes....but there are still something that you think about that you cant forget....its the memories that make the strongest impression in your heart that will remain.....but in the future the "Best Is Yet To Come" but you have to work for it and fight for it.....that is what counts

  • @crazybrett1

Makes me think about how it took me more than 15 months to finish this game on my own when I was just a little kid and when I did and heard this song I was over the moon :D

  • Best thing I've heard in my life.

  • this is EPIC *_*

  • Mgs 4 life

  • This is the most useful and most quiet of every upload of this song on youtube. Making it the best AND worst.

I don't want half the lyrics (one language but no translation) but I DO want it a similar volume to half of youtube. (I hate LOUD ones) Is there ANY chance of you re-uploading the same video but loudER, or perhaps render one and email it to me?

Just a thought. You've done good work and a great service to us. Just not such a great job OF it.Bad volume ruins playlists Thank you though

  • Everytime I come back to this song in the different ages of my life, this song speaks to me in a different way. Thank you.. I was on the verge of ending my life until I came back to the very song that saved my life before.. S.E.R.E specialist United States Air Force or United State Army Ranger.. here I come

  • @umbrae12

nope, thats all i got, any further discussion on this will a matter of semantics i think, you're gonna have to use your imagination a bit in places, but you'll end up with the closest thing to a definitive translation currently available online. i just wanted to open up the subtle nuances in the song so everyone can see maybe a greater depth in the song. thanks for your time a chara, peace out.

and to all, go mbeannaí dia sibh :)

  • ...emotional conotations than the physical act of fighting.

'caillte' has several meaning, i.e. lost, perished, dreadful, sordid, i suggest that its somewhere between lost and perished in this case, while 'ar fán' is 'astray'

    so 'feeling (perished/lost) and astray'

i'ld also like to offer a better translation of 'inár measc' as 'in our midst' suggests a large crowd, though i think the song is between 2 ppl, but i can't find a one word equivalent in english, (maybe 'between us').

    's sin é :)

  • @mactiregealach Alright! I've gotten a lot of comments about the translation this past week! This is great! Thank you. I'll be sure to include your correction in the next update. Probably in couple of months when my spring break starts. Thanks again. Feel free to comment if something else catches your eyes.

  • @umbrae12 will you make the version with the changes? that would be really awesome ^^

  • :S my bad, there is more! :)

Lig leis = Let it go

Cuimhne leat an t-ám: is not a question more a pleading i.e. 'remember the time...' but 'An chuimhin leat..' is a question, 'do you remember'

'sásta' might better be translated as 'willing' while it also means satisfied, it never means happy in the joyous sense. for me, 'willing' fits the context of the song better. also therefore, 'gáire' makes more sense when translated as smiling.

'T-achrann' is better as 'strife' since it carries more...

  • GIVE ME LIGHT AND THUNDER !!!!!!

  • I am having trouble with my girlfriend and when I heard this song, I cried. Such a beautiful song. Such powerful lyrics and vocal. Masterpiece.

  • sorry again, last thing, promise :) in the line 'Leannáin le smál' she sings 2 extra syllables between leannáin, and le smál, it's hard to hear but it sounds like 'Leannáin crá, grá le smál' roughly meaning: A lover tormented, with the stain of love.

smál also means, cloud, or gloom. so meaning is contextual, seldom literal.

the line 'tug aghaidi ar an saol is'; should be 'tug aghaidh....' only the spelling here. and 'faol bhrón' should be 'faoi bhrón'

and that really is all now :)

  • @mactiregealach Suggest away, my friend! As I don't speak this beautiful language, I do not see the mistakes, so, please, do tell when you see something's off. I, as well as the rest of the MGS community, do appreciate it! Thank you.

  • @umbrae12 what language is it?

  • @natewikman its gaelic not much diffrent form irish

  • @mactiregealach Finally, someone else that recognises the two missing syllables, I'm not a speaker of the language, but I've suggested it on forums previously and it just gets dismissed, though to me it just sounded like (phoenetically) "faa caa", yours definately sounds plausible.

For anyone interested, here is the only other translation I've found that seemed accurate at the time.

  • @WizborgMKII forums .junkerhq .net / viewtopic .php? p= 10456&sid=20cbf2b3aa5d6e09a98cebc532c4453f

    without the spaces obviously... ;)

  • Many thanks for what is the best translation of these lyrics i've so far seen,

might i recomend a couple slight adjustments though Lig leis agus beidh leat=Allow it and it will be (with you) An ormsa no orainne a bhí an locht=Upon myself or upon ourselves, was the fault?

orainne is 1st person plural. also 'smál' probably translates better as 'stain'.

Other than that, smashing good job you did. Go raibh míle maith agat.

  • @mactiregealach Thank you for your suggestions. I'll fix those in the next version. :)

  • I was like 6 years old when my older brothers playing that game :D I'm soooo loving that game :D its the only game about "war" that I really like ^^ I think its one of the best game ever

  • Metal Gear Solid has always been my favorite Video Game. The Character development, the plot, the back stories, the voice actors, the music, everything about this game is perfect to me and honestly, it makes me cry knowing that Snake and most of the legendary MGS character have finally reached there end. Thank you Hideo Kojima for creating such an epic game for all of us.

  • Any chance on getting a phonetic read-along guide for the Gaelic? I'm having a bit of trouble with the accent.

  • the best song ever. it gave me so much great feelings from the time without responsibilities, without studies, without work, memories from childhood, when I was sitting all nights and playing on my ps'one. I just love! this sound ;)

  • its times like this that im glad i live in the greatest country on earth! IRELAND!

  • i love you guys....

  • Now listen to this while you're looking into a snowy landscape. Makes you feel like the heavens might just open. (:

  • Great song. Reminds me on all time I spent playing metal gear as a kid...

How can 2 ppl not like this?

  • 2ppl have xbox

  • 2:39 ---> "Sonas sioraí inár measc" is pronounced "Sony is the shit in our mouths"? xD

  • Farewell Snake, we'll miss you :,(

  • to this day, i still love this song, i listen to it when i'm down and it helps me relax and ease the pain. 3:45-4:15 is the most relaxing melody ever

  • first heard this song in 1998 when i was in high school. 12 years later its still on every single CD i make and always playing somewhere in the back of my head. that my friends is an incredible song!

  • I must admit, I got a late start on MGS. I was watching someone play through MGS4 live on another website when this song came on. The next day, I went out and bought all the games. This song was worth it.

  • I wonder if I can find just the instrumental of this song... I've been looking everywhere. D=

  • This is one of my all time favorite songs. thanx for the translation. It means a lot to know what is said. And it's even better then I'd hoped for. ^_^

  • I'm glad I fell upon this translation - I would simply hate to have found one just ta learn it was wrong ><

thank-you so much & happiness has 2 p's ^^; just thought I'll mention it if no one eses has (at 2:43)

  • @xXRisunaXx Thank you. Totally missed the misspelling. I shall fix it for the final release.

  • Thx 4 this

    Subbed with proud !

  • this song always sends me somewhere else i love it

  • My life motto is this song.

  • B...R...I...L...L...I...A...N....T

  • i remember when the game came out in 2000 that me and my brother used to finish this game almost every 2 days just to keep listening to this song coz we didnt knw where to get it from... he passed away 3 years ago and still till this moment , whenever i listen to this song i remember every single moment we had together and get loads of tears in my eyes.. may god bless him . this song became a part of me , coz it spiritually reminds me of him . may god shower him with mercy.

    thnx for the upload.

  • @azizbash77 Dude, that really moved me. May Allah have mercy on him and us all. Amen.

  • @amaj83 amin. thanks.

  • @azizbash77 o dude im sorry for your brother :´(

  • @azizbash77 thats such a beautiful memory. Perfect for such a beautiful song. Its great that you still remember him. And thanks for the upload umbrae, this was and will always be my favorite song of all time

  • @azizbash77 You made me cry, bro. I've seen people just attention seeking before, but what you said came from the heart. God bless his soul.

  • @azizbash77 Very sorry for your lost. My best to you and your brother.

  • honestly you made smile and am so happy for this Video

    thanQ

  • I have loved this song ever since i was a little kid about 7-8 years old playing Metal Gear Solid 1, when it was kinda new! But what i didn't knew that was that the lyrics to this song was so amazing!

  • do you remember love tormented love from the heart it wasn't but music at night it is eternal love it is misfortune ;; go now and be remembered go now and be in love remember the time when you were happy do you remember the time when you laughed life is wonderful can you believe it? your face says that your happiness will go forever what happened during those days what happened during those nights do you remember the time when you were sad do you remember the time when you were weeping
  • Myself and others were at fault

Our feelings were lost on waiting

Why were we fighting for so long?

    There is beauty in life

Do you believe there is beauty in life?

    Believe me

  • this is what my grandfather said the song meant after i looked up the lyrics on wiki they read the same thing my grandfather said so i guess he is rite

  • Shouldn't "Cuardaimís e" be translated with "Believe me.."?

  • Great work!!! congratulations! and so much thank!

  • thank you SO much for this translation...now the whole song makes sense (how I wish I was able to speak/understand Irish)

  • i think im gonna cry when i hear this song

  • Fantastic song. MGS soundtrack is one of the best.

  • A masterpiece... the best song for the best game.

  • Everytime i hear this-i think of the sneak-peak video for the ps1 MGS1 with the japanese voice actors and the "beta wolf pack" which I believe sniper wolf was supposed to have a small "group" of women who were also using psg1's or something o_o

in either case-it was an unlock in METAL GEAR VR:Training game that was released after mgs1; and it still is the best song next to the original theme in the metal gear saga ^_^

  • cherish your life!!! everyday everynight EVERY SECOND life will throw a surprise at you. you may die today tomorrow now next week next month next year may never know when death is knocking at your door spend as much time with your loved ones as much as you can.

  • No one...ever....in the future or on this planet could ever explain anything to do with metal gear solid or this song...in any amount of words, based on how absolutely amazing this is

honestly i get emotional everytime i listen to this

if anyone likes this please put thumbs up not for me...but to see who really supports metal gear solid to the fullest extent possible

  • @MrSuper65 i strugle to explain what the song means and i compare it to the real world

  • @blackmobe i compare every song similar to this to the real world

  • @MrSuper65

I'm Probably one of the top 10 biggest fans in the world, so I think it's safe to say that NO ONE will EVER be able to comprehend MGS, because..... Just........ Well you know, and I know, so lets leave it at that :)

  • i remember when i first played metal gear solid

i was playing ape escape 3 and there was a minigame called "mesal gear solid"

then i decided to play the real thing and i was blown away by everything that game had coming to me. hopefully snake will still live on "Old soldiers never die"

  • Trying to compare MGS to another game is impossible

  • @sephiroh445 so true MGS can never be comparied to another game

  • words simply cannot describe

  • I think everyone out there could really gain something through playing Metal Gear Solid. It's so moving, not just this song, but the whole story. I remember being a child and not being able to move my finger fast enough to survive the torture scene. I was used to cheesy movies where the girl always lived. When I finally got to the end and she was gone I cried. I couldn't have been more than 10 or so years old.

  • Nice work on translating, though i'm sure others will say there are mistakes. A song like this cuts to the soul even not knowing the meaning of the words. We cannot change the past, no matter what. We can, however, take action in the present to affect the future.

  • i was like

shadow moses? WTF im going to shadow moses.....again

    landing zone, ok this is........nostalgic

item placements, wtf kojima are you trying time make me cry?

the song, holy shit i have to grab a tissue

the broken surveillance cam, i cried the shit out.

  • la cancion es preciosa. who sing this song? the name please?

  • @ballantinescola "The best is yet to Come" y Composed by Rika Muranaka & Performed by Aoife Ní Fhearraigh. <<Donegal Irish

  • awsome! these lyrics defenatly suit MGS, a story about love, war and sorrow

  • @wolflover552 so true man don't take this the wrong way i love MGS but i compare MGS to whats going on today.

  • @blackmobe

same here, whatever snake says, he can compare it with real life, thats why snake is just so awsome XD

  • i feel like fly when heard this

  • is this specifically for metal gear or is this song for other things too?

  • cherish your life you could die today tomorrow you may never know. live your life as much as you can

  • Just about the best song I've ever got to know.

  • just beatiful

  • Can you make a video similar to this to a song called "Inner Universe" from the Ghost in the Shell soundtrack? , because the lyrics might not be true also =s.
