@Fibr3Optix Do you mean a Portuguese Guitar? There is no place in Canada. I lived in Montreal for over 6 years and in Vancouver for 2 years so I have some understanding of the instrument distribution in Canada. I did my Ph.D. Dissertation at McGill University on Portuguese immigrants so I am plugged into that community in Canada and the US. You might find someone with a used guitarra is you look very hard. I have some for sale on my Fernandez Music website.
@link1123333 I have been importing Portuguese guitarrars for over 25 years. I have 20 instrument for sale. You can see them on my web site. Look up Fernandez Music on Google. These instruments are made in Portugal and I personally spent 5 or 6 hours refining them. I work on the tuning machine to make it work smoothly, I precision level the frets, I set the bridge and nut so they are easy to play and sometimes I refinish parts of them.
Yes, I am doing up and down strokes with my index finger. This is a traditional technique for the Portuguese guitarra. I explain this technique in the free lesson which is on my Fernandez Music website. The up and down stroke is called dedilho in Portuguese or dedillo in Spanish. It is a technique which has been used for hundreds of years. Luis de Milan's vihuela method from 1536 mentions this technique.
sooooooooooo portuguese, haha. Im full blooded, miss Portugal wanna go back soon. I also wanna snag me a viola, ive been playin acoustic a few months, i cant put the guitar down.
its call viola because the viola isin t a guitar. The portuguese guitar is from the familie of the harps and the viola is from the bandolins they have diferents cocepts
The Portuguese word viola comes from the same root as the Spanish word vihuela. In Spain, the 16th century vihuela was like a small Spanish guitar with double strings. In English the word viola is related to the word viol. In various languages the word "viola" includes a variety of instruments such as the viola da gamba, the viola d'amore,
In Portuguese the words viola and violão have come to mean fretted instruments which most other languages call a guitar.
The Portuguese Guitarra is part of the cittern family which are fretted instruments with teardrop shaped bodies, flat backs (as opposed to the lute bowl shape) and courses of double strings. Pedro Caldeira Cabral in his 400 page book, A Guitarra Portuguesa, argues that the modern guitarra evolved in Portugal from a Renaissance "citara" (Cittern or cithern in English). In the 18th Century the importation of the English Guittar influenced the design of the Portuguese guitarra.
In the 20th century the Portuguese Guitarra evolved into a larger instrument than the 19th century version. The Gracio Family and later the Cardoso Family made modern world class Lisbon style guitarras. The Gracio Family in association with Artur Paredes are credited with the development of the modern Coimbra style Guitarra
"Tudo isto é Fado" is a good song. The words were written by Aníbal Nazaré and the music was composed by Fernandeo Carvalho (1913-1967). The laws of Portugal protect copyright for 70 years after the death of the author or composer. For this reason I cannot make a video of this song without paying the Society of Portuguese Authors.
There are low-end tourist guitarras in Portugal for $300+ but they all need fret work, changing nut and bridge to real bone, set-up the action, a case, a string winder. There are also professional handmade guitarras in the $4000 to $8000 range. Then, you must add shipping and duty. There is a real possibility of damage during shipping. I recently had 2 guitarras broken during shipment. I have good mid-range guitarrs for sale on my fernandezmusic website which I have personally set-up.
I play a standard guitar, but I have just purchased a Coimbra guitar to learn. Is it possible to use the same fingerings you use on the Lisbon guitar to get a similar sound on my Coimbra?
Olá Laranjada. Yes, you can play this piece on your Coimbra Guitarra with the same fingering. However, the music will sound 1 full tone lower (that is, 2 fret lower). This is because the Lisboa Guitarra is tuned DABEAB while the Coimbra Guitarra is tuned CGADGA.
Olá. I will do a basic lesson which will include tuning in a few months. What you need right now is a CHROMATIC digital tuner--this is a tuner which has all of the notes including the sharps and flats. A CHROMATIC tuner is different than a GUITAR tuner which only includes the notes on a steel string or classical guitar.
I am working on a basic lesson which will deal with right hand techniques, the fado arpeggio patterns a few scales and a few chords. Eventually I will get to a video showing chord and scale patterns on the fingerboard. In the meantime it will be very useful for you to draw out a diagram of the fingerboard and try to figure out the placement of major and minor chords. This practical exercise will prove extremely informative--this is how I learned the patterns.
Você e muito bom :)

It looks like you're doing alternating strokes (both down and up strokes) with your index finger. Is this correct?
