Mike was reading through comments on Global Edmonton's Facebook page and someone had written that comment on the Wall. It was a poor timed error on the station. @Heroyesterday I've lived in Ontario, the pavement stays in better condition, then in exchange for that you pay 8% more tax on everything, 5% more income tax, health care premium, much higher car insurance, higher gas prices, higher cost of living. it's really a trade-off. I can live with potholes, crime is hardly an issue unless you go walking around Stony Plain or some downtown areas at night, and even then. There's as much garbage in a lot of Toronto/Vancouver areas.

The crime rates in the territories is like 10 times the rest of Canada, Alberta to Manitoba and then everywhere else. It's just a demographic fact, surely not racist.

@Heroyesterday I've lived in Ontario, the pavement stays in better condition, then in exchange for that you pay 8% more tax on everything, 5% more income tax, health care premium, much higher car insurance, higher gas prices, higher cost of living. it's really a trade-off. I can live with potholes, crime is hardly an issue unless you go walking around Stony Plain or some downtown areas at night, and even then. There's as much garbage in a lot of Toronto/Vancouver areas.

@Heroyesterday well the crime is, unfortunately just a result of the fact of a high aboriginal population in Western Canada vs. Eastern and they have terribly poverty and societal issues, that's the main factor in crime rates, they're higher across the prairies. Potholes are a pain, but I drive around them. Seriously, in terms of the average citizen I hardly feel like I run some extreme risk of getting murdered or robbed vs. living in Toronto or Vancouver.

@Heroyesterday well yes, it's not their fault or inherent, it's because they have so many social issues unique to their group. The reserves are just awful, and the areas with high aboriginal populations are very poor. I mean they make up about 3.5% of Canadian population but almost 1/3rd in prison. The crime rates in the territories is like 10 times the rest of Canada, Alberta to Manitoba and then everywhere else. It's just a demographic fact, surely not racist.

It's mostly poverty, poverty is the one thing always correlated with crime.
